Claims
- 1. The process of bonding the attaching surfaces of two bodies in which adhesive is applied to the attaching surface of one of said bodies by a nozzle extruding viscous fluid adhesive as a filament from a point spaced from said one attaching surface comprising the steps of moving said one attaching surface in a path to receive the filament while the filament is still soft and adhesive, while applying a gaseous jet adjacent said point of extrusion to act on said filament to attenuate it and to impart a circular motion to said filament, said jet having one component of movement in the direction of said one attaching surface and a rotational component about an axis corresponding to the direction of said one component to form a band of overlapping loops of said filament directly on the attaching surface, assemblying the bodies with a band of adhesive between the attaching surfaces, applying pressure to bring said adhesive into wetting adhesive engagement with both surfaces and hardening said adhesive.
- 2. The process of bonding the attaching surfaces of two bodies as defined in claim 1 in which said adhesive is a viscous solution of a synthetic polymer resin in a volatile organic solvent.
- 3. The process of bonding as defined in claim 2 in which said surfaces to be bonded are the attaching surfaces of an outsole and of a shoe upper.
- 4. The process of bonding the attaching surfaces of two bodies as defined in claim 2 in which the rate of supply of adhesive to the extrusion nozzle, the solids content of said adhesive at the point of extrusion, the velocity of the gaseous jet and the distance between said extrusion nozzle and said surface are coordinated to insure that said adhesive is in flowable condition when it reaches said surface to wet out and adhere to said surface and to flow together to form a substantially continuous cover of the surface within the edges of said band.
- 5. The process of bonding as defined in claim 4 in which said surface to be bonded are the attaching surfaces of an outsole and of a shoe upper.
- 6. The process of bonding the attaching surfaces of two bodies as defined in claim 1 in which said adhesive comprises a thermoplastic synthetic polymeric resin and is extruded in molten condition, in which the adhesive is activated to prepare the surfaces for bonding and in which said adhesive is hardened after assembly of the surface.
- 7. The process of bonding the attaching surfaces of two bodies as defined in claim 6 in which the temperature of said molten adhesive at a point of extrusion, the temperature and velocity of the gaseous jet and the distance between said extrusion nozzle and said surface are coordinated to insure that said adhesive is in substantially amorphous condition when it reaches said surface and in which said surface is heated prior to receiving said filament whereby said substantially amphorous adhesive enters into wetting adhesive engagement with said surface.
- 8. The process of bonding as defined in claim 6 in which said surfaces to be bonded are the attaching surfaces of an outsole and of a shoe upper.
- 9. The process of bonding the attaching surface of two bodies as defined in claim 6 in which the band of overlapping loops of adhesive filaments has an open area of at least 25% of the overall area of said band, said gaseous jet is supplied to said nozzle at a temperature such that it is within about 100.degree. F. of the temperature of the molten adhesive extruded from said nozzle, said surface is maintained at a distance from said nozzle selected to provide the desired width of band but not over about 3 inches and in which the speed of movement of said surface relative to said nozzle is correlated with the rate of supplying of molten adhesive from said nozzle to provide a predetermined amount of adhesive per unit length of said band.
- 10. The process of bonding as defined in claim 9 in which said surfaces to be bonded are the attaching surfaces of an outsole and shoe upper.
- 11. The process of forming an adhesive bond between the attaching surfaces of an outsole and of a shoe upper as defined in claim 10 in which the temperature and rate of supply of adhesive to the extrusion nozzle and of gas to the gaseous jet, and the rate of movement of said one attaching surface relative to said extrusion nozzle are controlled to provide a filament diameter of from about 0.002 to about 0.007 inch, a band width of from about 7/16 to about 5/8 inch and a weight of adhesive of from about 13 to about 52 mg. of adhesive per cm. of length of said band.
