Claims
- 1. A cutting tool mounting apparatus, comprising:
- a toolholder including a head assembly for holding a cutting tool, a cylindrical shaft extending from said head assembly and an eccentric cam follower lug extending transversely from said shaft, the eccentric cam follower lug being attached to the shaft for rotation with the shaft;
- a mounting block having a cylindrical bore disposed therethrough, said shaft being received in said bore of said mounting block;
- a cam piece slidably disposed within said mounting block, said cam piece being engaged with said eccentric cam follower lug so that said shaft is rotated relative to said mounting block as said cam piece slides relative to said mounting block;
- cam piece position adjuster connecting said cam piece to said mounting block;
- wherein said adjuster has an adjustable threaded engagement with said cam piece so that rotation of said adjuster relative to said mounting block varies the threaded engagement of said adjuster with said cam piece and slides said cam piece relative to said mounting block.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said adjuster is a dial screw.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein;
- said mounting block includes a mounting block body and a mounting block end cap detachably attached to said mounting block body;
- said cylindrical bore of said mounting block is defined through said mounting block body;
- said head assembly and said eccentric cam follower lug of said toolholder are disposed on opposite sides of said mounting block body, with said eccentric cam follower lug being disposed in said mounting block end cap; and
- said eccentric cam follower lug is detachably attached to said shaft.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:
- said cam piece and said cam piece position adjuster are constructed such that said shaft is rotatable through an arc of at least about 2.degree..
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
- a shaft lock constructed to selectively lock said shaft in position within said bore of said mounting block.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:
- said cam piece has a cavity defined therein by first and second opposing planar walls; and
- said eccentric cam follower lug includes a partially cylindrical end piece closely received between said opposing planar walls so that said partially cylindrical end piece engages both of said opposing planar walls to control rotational position of said shaft within said mounting block, said rotational position being defined by the position of said cam piece relative to said mounting block.
- 7. A method of adjusting an alignment of a cutting tool with an elongated rotating workpiece on a multi-spindle automatic bar machine, said method comprising the steps of:
- (a) rotating one and only one bi-directional threaded adjuster of a toolholder holding the cutting tool; and thereby
- (b) adjusting the alignment of a cutting edge of the cutting tool relative to a rotational axis of the elongated rotating workpiece to reduce any non-parallel alignment of the cutting edge relative to the rotational axis.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein:
- step (a) is accomplished by a human operator using only one hand to grasp and rotate the adjuster.
- 9. The method of claim 7, wherein:
- step (a) includes bi-directionally rotating the adjuster back and forth to align the cutting tool.
- 10. The method of claim 7, further comprising:
- in response to step (a), sliding a cam piece of said toolholder;
- with said sliding cam piece, moving an eccentric cam follower lug attached to a rotatable shaft of said toolholder; and
- thereby rotating the shaft to accomplish said step (b) of adjusting the alignment of the cutting tool.
- 11. The method of claim 7, further comprising:
- after step (b), locking said cutting tool in a fixed rotational position relative to said toolholder.
- 12. A cutting tool mounting apparatus, comprising:
- a toolholder including a head assembly for holding a cutting tool, a cylindrical shaft extending from said head assembly and an eccentric cam follower lug extending transversely from said shaft, the eccentric cam follower lug being attached to the shaft for rotation with the shaft;
- a mounting block having a cylindrical bore disposed therethrough, said shaft being received in said bore of said mounting block;
- a cam piece slidably disposed within said mounting block, said cam piece being engaged with said eccentric cam follower lug so that said shaft is rotated relative to said mounting block as said cam piece slides relative to said mounting block;
- a cam piece position adjuster connecting said cam piece to said mounting block;
- and wherein:
- said mounting block includes a mounting block body and a mounting block end cap detachably attached to said mounting block body;
- said cylindrical bore of said mounting block is defined through said mounting block body;
- said head assembly and said eccentric cam follower lug of said toolholder are disposed on opposite sides of said mounting block body, with said eccentric cam follower lug being disposed in said mounting block end cap; and
- said eccentric cam follower lug is detachably attached to said shaft.
- 13. A cutting tool mounting apparatus, comprising:
- a toolholder including a head assembly for holding a cutting tool, a cylindrical shaft extending from said head assembly and an eccentric cam follower lug extending transversely from said shaft, the eccentric cam follower lug being attached to the shaft for rotation with the shaft;
- a mounting block having a cylindrical bore disposed therethrough, said shaft being received in said bore of said mounting block;
- a cam piece slidably disposed within said mounting block, said cam piece being engaged with said eccentric cam follower lug so that said shaft is rotated relative to said mounting block as said cam piece slides relative to said mounting block;
- a cam piece position adjuster connecting said cam piece to said mounting block;
- and wherein:
- said cam piece has a cavity defined therein by first and second opposing planar walls; and
- said eccentric cam follower lug includes a partially cylindrical end piece closely received between said opposing planar walls so that said partially cylindrical end piece engages both of said opposing planar walls to control rotational position of said shaft within said mounting block, said rotational position being defined by the position of said cam piece relative to said mounting block.
