Claims
- 1. A method of implanting a graft of a stent-graft system within an aneurysm in a hollow-body organ or vessel, the method comprising steps of:
- providing a graft having first and second end regions, a loop affixed to the graft near the first end region, the loop having first and second ends and a predetermined circumference, the loop assuming an elongated shape when compressed for delivery and resuming an expanded shape when the draft is deployed, the loop spreading the graft to an expanded diameter when the graft is deployed, substantially without the loop sliding relative to the graft;
- providing a delivery device having a manipulation lead disposed in an outer sheath, the manipulation lead including engagement means for releasably engaging the first and second ends;
- engaging the engagement means with the first and second ends;
- inserting the graft into the outer sheath of the delivery device by compressing the loop to assume an elongated shape;
- inserting the delivery device transluminally to deliver the graft to a position in the vicinity of the aneurysm;
- deploying the graft by retracting the outer sheath, the loop resuming the expanded shape and spreading the graft to the expanded diameter, substantially without the loop sliding relative to the graft; and
- moving the manipulation lead to adjust the graft to a desired position relative to the aneurysm.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further comprising a step of implanting a stent to fix the graft permanently in the desired position.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of releasing the each of the first and second ends of the loop from the engagement means prior to the step of implanting the stent.
- 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of releasing each of the first and second ends of the loop from the engagement means during the step of implanting the stent.
- 5. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of releasing each of the first and second ends of the loop from the engagement means subsequent to the step of implanting the stent.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the hollow-body organ is an abdominal aorta that communicates with first and second iliac arteries and a brachial/carotid artery, the stent is implanted using a delivery catheter, and the step of inserting the delivery device to transluminally deliver the graft involves inserting the delivery device through a first iliac artery, the method further comprising a step of inserting the delivery catheter to deliver the stent through one of the arteries in a group consisting of the first iliac artery, the second iliac artery and the brachial/carotid artery.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the manipulation lead is movable in proximal and distal directions to adjust the graft to a desired position, the step of moving the manipulation lead comprising moving the manipulation lead in the proximal and distal directions.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of inserting the graft into the outer sheath of the delivery device comprises retracting the graft within the outer sheath of delivery device.
- 9. The method of claim 1 further comprising a step, after the step of moving the graft to a desired position, of retracting the graft within the delivery device to retrieve the graft.
- 10. A method of implanting a graft of a stent-graft system within an aneurysm in a hollow-body organ or vessel, the method comprising steps of:
- providing a graft having first and second end regions, a loop affixed to the graft near the first end region, the loop having first and second ends and a predetermined circumference, the loop assuming an elongated shape when compressed for delivery and resuming an expanded shape when the graft is deployed, the loop spreading the graft to an expanded diameter when the graft is deployed, substantially without the loop sliding relative to the graft;
- providing a delivery device having a first manipulation lead and an outer sheath, the first manipulation lead including engagement means for releasably engaging the graft;
- engaging the engagement means with the first and second ends of the loop;
- inserting the graft into the outer sheath of the delivery device by compressing the loop to assume an elongated shape;
- inserting the delivery device transluminally to deliver the graft to a position in the vicinity of the aneurysm;
- deploying the graft by retracting the outer sheath, the loop resuming the expanded shape and spreading the graft to the expanded diameter, substantially without the loop sliding relative to the graft; and
- moving the first manipulation lead to adjust the graft to a desired position relative to the aneurysm.
- 11. The method of claim 10 further comprising a step of implanting a proximal stent to fix the graft permanently in the desired position.
- 12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of releasing each of the first and second ends of the loop from the engagement means after the step of implanting the proximal stent.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the delivery device further comprises a second manipulation lead, the second manipulation lead including a snare, the graft engaged within the snare, the method further comprising the step of opening the snare to release the graft after the step of implanting the proximal stent.
- 14. The method of claim 10 wherein the hollow-body organ is an abdominal aorta that communicates with first and second iliac arteries and a brachial/carotid artery, the proximal stent is implanted using a delivery catheter, and the step of inserting the delivery device to transluminally deliver the graft involves inserting the delivery device through a first iliac artery, the method further comprising a step of inserting the delivery catheter to deliver the proximal stent through one of the arteries in a group consisting of the first iliac artery, the second iliac artery and the brachial/carotid artery.
