Claims
- 1. A method of arranging a voice coil linear actuator to exhibit automatic eddy-current braking at prescribed "speeds" well above its normal operating speed, this actuator comprising bobbin means, a drive coil wound on this bobbin means, and arranged to operate within a prescribed magnetic flux; damping means spaced from the bobbin means, cylindrical connect means joining said bobbin means to said damping means and driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator; this method comprising:
- configuring said connect means as narrow ribs spaced equidistant about the bobbin means and exhibiting sufficiently narrow cross-section so that when said actuator is traversing said flux at a prescribed "speed", sufficient eddy-current will be generated to reduce actuator speed; cutting thru the cross-section of each said damping means to create several impedance gaps; such that when said actuator is traversing said flux at prescribed respective speeds, sufficient eddy-current will be generated to reduce actuator speed; and
- providing visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 2. A method of arranging a voice coil linear actuator to exhibit automatic eddy-current braking a prescribed speeds, this actuator comprising bobbin means, a drive coil wound on this bobbin means, and arranged to operate within prescribed magnetic flux; a number of annular damping means spaced from the bobbin means, and connect means joining said bobbin means to said damping means, with driven means adapted and arranged to be driven by said actuator; this method comprising:
- cutting thru the cross-section of each said damping means to create one or several impedance gaps; such that when said actuator is traversing said flux at prescribed respective speeds, sufficient eddy-current will be generated to reduce actuator speed; and providing visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 3. A method of arranging a magnetic disk drive linear inductive actuator to exhibit automatic eddy-current braking at prescribed speeds,
- this actuator comprising core support means, a drive inductor mounted on this support means and adapted to operate within a prescribed magnetic flux; annular damping means spaced from the support means, and connect means joining said support means to said damping means, with driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator.
- this method comprising; reducing the cross-section of each said damping means to create one or several impedance gaps; such that,
- when said actuator is traversing said flux at a prescribed respective speed, sufficient eddy-current will be generated to automatically reduce actuator speed; and providing visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 4. A method of arranging a magnetic disk drive linear actuator to exhibit automatic eddy-current braking at a prescribed respective speeds, this actuator comprising support means, a drive inductor means mounted on this support means and adapted to operate within a prescribed magnetic flux; N annular damping means spaced from the support means, and connect means joining said support means to said damping means, with driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator; this method comprising:
- configuring said connect means as narrow ribs spaced equidistant about the support means and exhibiting sufficiently narrow cross-section so that, when said actuator is traversing said flux at a prescribed speed, sufficient eddy-current will be generated to reduce actuator speed; while also reducing the cross-section of each said damping means to create one or several impedance gaps; such that,
- when said actuator is traversing said flux at a prescribed respective speed, sufficient eddy-current will be generated to automatically reduce actuator speed; and providing visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 5. A linear actuator-load array including inductor means mounted on metallic core means which is selected and arranged to exhibit prescribed braking eddy-currents during electromagnetic excitation of the inductor means, this core means including N impedance-enhancement means, each adapted to enhance eddy-current to the point where it produces a drag voltage apt for reducing actuator speed where it exceeds a prescribed respective limitspeed; and driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 6. The invention of claim 5, wherein said core means includes a number of annular ring portions, each having at least one impedance-enhancing dielectric gap thereacross.
- 7. The invention of claim 6, wherein said core means includes an elongate portion extended axially from said inductor means, this extended portion including a "relieved portion" therealong defined by an array of relatively narrow-cross-section ribs separated from one another and providing eddy-current impedance-enhancement as well as increased resistance to heat flow.
- 8. The invention of claim 7 wherein said ring portions are disposed at the end of the core means opposite said inductor means, separated therefrom by said "relieved portion".
- 9. The invention of claim 8, wherein the driving core means comprises a cylindrical actuator coil mount including N cylindrical rings and wherein a driven actuator-carriage structure, carrying the core means, is coupled to said rings, inward thereof, via at least one annular suspension ring.
- 10. A linear disk drive actuator-load array including inductor means mounted on metallic support means, this support means exhibiting eddy-currents during electromagnetic excitation of the inductor means, this support means including N impedance-enhancing gapped-ring means, each selected and arranged to enhance eddy-current to the point where it produces a drag voltage apt for reducing actuator speed above a prescribed actuator speed, this gapped-ring means comprising an annular structure having at least one impedance-enhancing dielectric gap thereacross; and driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 11. In a magnetic disk drive array, a transducer locating system including an inductive linear actuator and associated driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator; this actuator comprising a driving unit couple via coupling means to a driven unit, said driving unit being mounted on drive-support means and adapted to be normally thrust thru magnetic flux at a prescribed range of speeds whereby appreciable eddy-current is generated on at least a portion of the support means, this portion including N low impedance connect means spaced form said inductive structure, and conductive bridge means connecting said connect means to said inductive structure; said connect means including dielectric impedance means intersecting at least one eddy current path; said bridge means being formed to exhibit high impedance in conducting eddy current; with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 12. The invention of claim 11, wherein said bridge means comprises an array of ribs which are disposed equi-spaced about the periphery of said support means portion, with each rib cross-section being set to render prescribed braking eddy current at a prescribed actuator speed.
- 13. The invention of claim 12, wherein said support means, including said mount portion, ribs and ring portions, comprises aluminum or an aluminum, alloy; and wherein said support means is carried on a carriage structure disposed radially inward thereof, being coupled to said connect means.
- 14. The invention of claim 13, wherein each said impedance means comprises an annular means with an air gap; and wherein said annular means are somewhat smaller in diameter than said mount portion, and carries connector means adapted to mount a flexible coil-current-conductor means.
- 15. A voice coil linear actuator-load array including a prescribed drive coil structure mount on coil-mount means and arranged to be normally thrust thru magnetic flux at a prescribed range of speeds whereby appreciable eddy-current is generated on at least a portion of the coil-mount means, this portion including conductive connect means spaced from said coil structure and conductive bridge means connecting said connect means to said drive coil structure; said connect means including dielectric impedance means comprising N gapped-ring means intersecting at least one eddy current path; and said bridge means being formed to exhibit high impedance in conducting eddy current, said bridge means comprising an array of identical spaced narrow metal ribs whose cross-section is sufficiently reduced to enhance eddy current drag voltage at actuator speeds above said range; and with driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 16. A linear actuator-load array including coil means mounted on metallic drum means, this drum means exhibiting eddy-currents during electromagnetic excitation of the coil means, this drum means including N impedance-enhancing gapped-ring means, each selected and arranged to enhance eddy-current to the point where it produces a drag voltage apt for reducing actuator speed above a prescribed respective speed, this gapped-ring means comprising a cylindrical ring portion having at least one impedance-enhancing dielectric gap thereacross; and with driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator, with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
- 17. A linear actuator-load array including inductor means mounted on metallic core means which is selected and arranged to exhibit prescribed eddy-currents during electromagnetic excitation of the inductor means, this core means including a number of impedance-enhancement ring means, each having at least one impedance-enhancing dielectric gap thereacross and so adapted to enhance eddy-current to the point where it produces a drag voltage apt for reducing actuator speed where it exceeds a prescribed respective speed; and with driven means adopted and arranged to be driven by said actuator; with visco-elastic coupling means between said actuator and said driven means.
