Claims
- 1. An adjustable knee support that is secured to a leg to support the patella and surrounding tissue and which allows a normal range of motion of the knee, comprising
- a sheet of elastic material having a central support portion that at least surrounds and supports the patella and has upper and lower edges and two side edges adapted to extend along the leg on opposite sides of the patella,
- a first edge strap extending from a first side of said central support portion generally along one of the upper or lower edges of said central support portion,
- a second edge strap extending from a second side of said central support portion generally along the other of the upper or lower edges of said central support portion,
- central elastic fastener means secured to the central support portion at least one of said side edges and adapted to be aligned laterally with the patella, said central support portion being stretchable to support the patella directly when said central elastic fastener means is stretched,
- first and second strap extensions each secured at one end to one of said first and second edge straps and each adapted to wrap around the leg immediately above and below the patella, said strap extensions being stretchable to secure the support on the leg, and
- means for releasably securing said first and second strap extensions and said central elastic fastener means when they are stretched to develop said compression,
- each of said central elastic fastener, said first and second edge straps and strap extensions providing said securing and said developing of compression independently of one another through a stretching in a direction generally perpendicular to the leg,
- said first and second edge straps, and said central elastic fastener means being formed with cut-outs to separate and define said central fastener portion from each of said first and second edge straps, said cut-outs extending laterally from said two side edges and having a generally V-shaped configuration such that said first and second edge straps are each spaced vertically from said central fastener means by gaps when said first and second strap extensions are wrapped around the leg and when said releasably securing means are secured.
- 2. The adjustable knee support of claim 1 wherein each of said strap extensions includes a section formed of a resilient elastic material having a length in the direction of the strap extension sufficient to accommodate expansions and contractions of the leg while maintaining said compression at a level adapted to hold the support in a preselected position on the leg.
- 3. The adjustable knee support of claim 2 wherein said section is located near said securing means at a free end of the strap extension.
- 4. The adjustable knee support of claim 3 wherein said central support portion includes at least one pocket adapted to extend generally vertically on each side of the patella and further comprising flexible stay means held in each of said pockets to together produce an enhanced mechanical support for the knee while nevertheless allowing a full range of knee flexure.
- 5. The adjustable knee support of claim 4 wherein there are a pair of said pockets and stays each adapted to lie at one side of the patella and each adapted to extend substantially the full height of said central support portion.
