Claims
- 1. A force applying device comprising:
a plurality of self-contained piston modules positioned together in tandem, said plurality of self-contained piston modules including:
housings having voids therein; and pistons mounted within said voids of said housings, said pistons having driven surfaces and drive surfaces substantially opposite said driven surfaces, wherein said pistons are adapted to receive fluid pressure against said driven surfaces to drive said pistons in an advanced direction such that said drive surfaces of said pistons abut other driven surfaces of other pistons of said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 2. A force applying device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an adapter module having a first surface adapted to be fastened to a work support device and a second surface adapted to mount said plurality of self-contained piston modules thereto.
- 3. A force applying device as claimed in claim 2, further comprising a retainer module positioned substantially opposite said adapter module such that said plurality of self-contained piston modules are positioned therebetween, said retainer module having a passage therethrough for communicating fluid to said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 4. A force applying device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising a shaft centrally disposed through said pistons for communicating fluid to said driven surfaces of said pistons.
- 5. A force applying device as claimed in claim 4, wherein said shaft includes a throughbore and at least one radial hole in communication with said throughbore for communicating fluid through and out of said shaft to said driven surfaces of said pistons.
- 6. A force applying device as claimed in claim 5, wherein said shaft further includes a reduced diameter portion.
- 7. A force applying device as claimed in claim 6, further comprising a nut threaded to said reduced diameter portion of said shaft for pre-loading together said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 8. A force applying device as claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of said housings include:
a first surface; a second surface substantially opposite said first surface; a void between said first and second surfaces; an annular projection extending axially from said first surface; an annular groove in said second surface for accepting another annular projection from another housing of said plurality of self-contained piston modules; a second annular groove in at least one of said first and second surfaces for accepting a seal therein;
- 9. A force applying device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said pistons are slidably disposed within said housings in a longitudinal direction such that exhaust chambers are longitudinally defined between said pistons and said housings.
- 10. A force applying device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said housings include first surfaces and substantially oppositely disposed second surfaces, said drive surfaces of said pistons and said first surfaces of adjacently disposed housings define fluid chambers therebetween.
- 11. A force applying device as claimed in claim 10, wherein fluid pressure accumulates in said fluid chambers so as to slidably displace said pistons within said housings from a home position to an advanced position.
- 12. A force applying device comprising:
a plurality of self-contained piston modules being in direct abutment with one another, at least one of said plurality of self-contained piston modules comprising:
a housing comprising:
a first surface; a second surface opposite said first surface; a void between said first and second surfaces; an annular projection extending axially from said first surface; an annular groove in said second surface for accepting another annular projection from another housing of said plurality of self-contained piston modules; a second annular groove in at least one of said first and second surfaces for accepting a seal therein; a piston disposed in said void of said housing, said piston comprising:
a driven surface; a drive surface substantially opposite said driven surface; said drive surface being in direct abutment with another driven surface of another piston of said plurality of self-contained piston modules
- 13. A force applying device as claimed in claim 12, further comprising an adapter module having a first surface adapted to be fastened to a work support device and a second surface adapted to mount said plurality of self-contained piston modules thereto.
- 14. A force applying device as claimed in claim 13, further comprising a retainer module positioned substantially opposite said adapter module such that said plurality of self-contained piston modules are positioned therebetween, said retainer module having a passage therethrough for communicating fluid to said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 15. A force applying device as claimed in claim 14, further comprising a shaft centrally disposed through said pistons for communicating fluid to said driven surfaces of said pistons.
- 16. A force applying device as claimed in claim 15, wherein said shaft includes a throughbore and at least one radial hole in communication with said throughbore for communicating fluid through and out of said shaft to said driven surface of said piston.
- 17. A force applying device as claimed in claim 16, wherein said shaft further includes a reduced diameter portion.
- 18. A force applying device as claimed in claim 17, further comprising a nut threaded to said reduced diameter portion of said shaft.
- 19. A force applying device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said pistons are slidably disposed within said housings in a longitudinal direction such that exhaust chambers are longitudinally defined between said pistons and said housings.
- 20. A force applying device as claimed in claim 12, wherein said housings include first surfaces and oppositely disposed second surfaces, said driven surfaces of said pistons and said first surfaces of adjacently disposed housings defining fluid chambers therebetween.
- 21. A force applying device as claimed in claim 20, wherein fluid pressure accumulates in said fluid chambers so as to slidably displace said pistons within said housings from a home position to an advanced position.
- 22. A force applying device comprising:
a first retainer module; a second retainer module positioned substantially opposite said first retainer module; and a plurality of self-contained piston modules positioned between said first and second retainer modules, said plurality of self-contained piston modules being in direct abutment with one another, at least one of said plurality of self-contained piston modules comprising:
a housing; and a piston mounted within said housing.
- 23. A force applying device as claimed in claim 22, further wherein said first retainer module includes a first surface adapted to be fastened to a work support device and a second surface adapted to mount said plurality of self-contained piston modules thereto.
- 24. A force applying device as claimed in claim 23, wherein said second retainer module includes a passage therethrough for communicating fluid to said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 25. A force applying device as claimed in claim 22, further comprising a shaft centrally disposed through said piston for communicating fluid to said driven surfaces of said piston.
- 26. A force applying device as claimed in claim 25, wherein said shaft includes a throughbore and at least one radial hole in communication with said throughbore for communicating fluid through and out of said shaft to said driven surface of said piston.
- 27. A force applying device as claimed in claim 26, wherein said shaft further includes a reduced diameter portion.
- 28. A force applying device as claimed in claim 27, further comprising a nut threaded to said reduced diameter portion of said shaft.
- 29. A force applying device as claimed in claim 22, wherein at least one of said housings includes:
a first surface; a second surface substantially opposite said first surface; a void between said first and second surfaces; an annular projection extending axially from said first surface; an annular groove in said second surface for accepting another annular projection from another housing of said plurality of self-contained piston modules; and a second annular groove in at least one of said first and second surfaces for accepting a seal therein.
- 30. A force applying device as claimed in claim 22, wherein said piston is slidably disposed within said housing in a longitudinal direction such that an exhaust chamber is longitudinally defined between said piston and said housing.
- 31. A force applying device as claimed in claim 22, wherein said housing includes a first surface and an oppositely disposed second surface, said drive surface of said piston and said first surface of an adjacently disposed housing defines a fluid chamber therebetween.
- 32. A force applying device as claimed in claim 31, wherein fluid pressure accumulates in said fluid chamber so as to slidably displace said piston within said housing from a home position to an advanced position.
- 33. A force applying device for mechanically actuating and maintaining engagement of an internal locking mechanism of a work support, said apparatus comprising:
an input end and an output end opposite said input end, said output end being attached to said work support; a work support driving member disposed at said output end; means for driving disposed between said input and output ends, said driving means adapted to advance said work support driving member into engagement with said work support to actuate said internal locking mechanism of said work support, wherein said driving means comprises:
a plurality of self-contained piston modules in direct abutment with one another, at least one of said plurality of self-contained piston modules comprising:
a housing; and a piston mounted within said housing.
- 34. A force applying device as claimed in claim 33, further comprising an adapter module having a first surface adapted to be fastened to a work support device and a second surface adapted to mount said plurality of self-contained piston modules thereto.
- 35. A force applying device as claimed in claim 34, further comprising a retainer module positioned opposite said adapter module such that said plurality of self-contained piston modules are positioned therebetween, said retainer module having a passage therethrough for communicating fluid to said plurality of self-contained piston modules.
- 36. A force applying device as claimed in claim 33, further comprising a shaft centrally disposed through said piston for communicating fluid to said driven surface of said piston.
- 37. A force applying device as claimed in claim 36, wherein said shaft includes a throughbore and at least one radial hole in communication with said throughbore for communicating fluid through and out of said shaft to said driven surface of said piston.
- 38. A force applying device as claimed in claim 37, wherein said shaft further includes a reduced diameter portion.
- 39. A force applying device as claimed in claim 38, further comprising a nut threaded to said reduced diameter portion of said shaft.
- 40. A force applying device as claimed in claim 33, wherein at least one of said housings include:
a first surface; a second surface substantially opposite said first surface; a void between said first and second surfaces; an annular projection extending axially from said first surface; an annular groove in said second surface for accepting another annular projection from another housing of said plurality of self-contained piston modules; a second annular groove in at least one of said first and second surfaces for accepting a seal therein;
- 41. A force applying device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said piston is slidably disposed within said housing in a longitudinal direction such that an exhaust chamber is longitudinally defined between said piston and said housing.
- 42. A force applying device as claimed in claim 33, wherein said housing includes a first surface and an oppositely disposed second surface, said drive surface of said piston and said first surface of an adjacently disposed housing define a fluid chamber therebetween.
- 43. A force applying device as claimed in claim 42, wherein fluid pressure accumulates in said fluid chamber so as to slidably displace said piston within
said housing from a home position to an advanced position.
