Claims
- 1. An adjustable wrench comprising:
- a housing having an axis,
- a plurality of jaws carried by the housing and extending beyond the housing parallel to the axis, said jaws having inner and outer surfaces,
- an adjusting mechanism surrounding the jaws and having axially facing cams engaging the outer surfaces of the jaws for moving the jaws toward the axis when the adjusting means is rotated,
- a control mechanism provided in the housing for preventing rotation of the jaws with respect to the housing and slots oriented radially with respect to the axis, said jaws having an engaging means engaging said slots, and
- a locking mechanism provided on the adjusting mechanism for resisting rotation of the adjusting mechanism in the housing, said locking mechanism
- having a plunger movable in said housing and a mechanism which translates said movement of plunger to engage and disengage said locking mechanism, and
- said adjusting mechanism includes an adjusting disk which is axially movable, in said housing.
- 2. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 1 wherein the control mechanism has a control member and the housing and control member have openings therethrough coaxial with the axis of the housing for enabling a member onto which the workpiece is to be turned to extend through the head.
- 3. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 1, wherein the said plunger is movable in a direction parallel to the housing axis.
- 4. An adjustable racket wrench as recited in claim 1, wherein said control mechanism supports said adjusting mechanism, and
- wherein said locking mechanism further comprises a biasing mechanism disposed between an upper surface of said adjusting mechanism and a lower surface of said housing to bias said adjusting mechanism downward so that the bottom surface of said adjusting mechanism is biased against the upper surface of an annular flange of said control mechanism.
- 5. An adjustable wrench as recited claim 1 further comprising an adjusting disk surrounding at least a portion of the control member and having axially inwardly directed cams engaging the jaws for driving the jaws radially inwardly in response to rotation of the disk in one rotational direction with respect to the control member, and
- wherein the adjusting disk is movable axially with respect to the control member on the housing.
- 6. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 5 wherein the axial movement of the adjusting disk controls the condition of the locking mechanism.
- 7. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 6 wherein the adjusting disk is biased axially in one direction to activate the locking mechanism, and motion of the disk in the opposite axial direction against the bias releases the locking mechanism.
- 8. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 5 and further comprising a camming mechanism which is operatively connected to the adjusting disk for moving the disk axially when the camming mechanism is moved circumferentially with respect to the axis.
- 9. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 8 wherein said camming mechanism includes a rotatably mounted ring disposed between the control member and the disk.
- 10. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 9 wherein,
- the control member has a flange which radially overlaps an end of the adjusting disk near the jaws, said flange having teeth,
- the teeth on the disk are movable axially with respect to the disk toward and away from the teeth on the flange.
- 11. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 5 wherein,
- the control member has a flange which radially overlaps an end of the adjusting disk near the jaws, and
- wherein the flange and said end of the disk have opposed faces and the locking mechanism is disposed between the flange and said end of the disk on said faces.
- 12. An adjustable wrench comprising,
- a housing having an axis,
- a plurality of jaws carried by the housing and extending beyond the housing parallel to the axis, said jaws having inner and outer surfaces,
- adjusting means surrounding the jaws and having axially faced cams engaging the outer surfaces of the jaws for moving the jaws toward the axis when the adjusting means is rotated,
- control means provided in the housing for preventing rotation of the jaws with respect to the housing and slots oriented radially with respect to the axis, said jaws having means engaging said slots,
- locking means provided on the adjusting means for resisting rotation of the adjusting means in the housing, and
- wherein the adjusting means includes an adjusting disk which is movable axially with respect to the control member on the housing.
- 13. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 12 wherein the axial movement of the adjusting disk controls the condition of the locking means.
- 14. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 13 wherein the adjusting disk is biased axially in one direction to activate the locking means, and motion of the disk in the opposite axial direction against the bias releases the locking means.
- 15. An adjustable wrench comprising,
- a housing having an axis,
- a plurality of jaws carried by the housing and extending beyond the housing parallel to the axis,
- said jaws having inner and outer surfaces,
- adjusting means surrounding the jaws and having axially faced cams engaging the outer surfaces of the jaws for moving the jaws toward the axis when the adjusting means is rotated,
- control means having a control disk provided in the housing for preventing rotation of the jaws with respect to the housing and slots oriented radially with respect to the axis,
- said jaws having means for engaging said slots, and wherein the control disk has a tubular portion extending the entire axial distance through the housing.
- 16. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 15 wherein the adjusting means includes an adjusting disk which is axially movable with respect to the housing.
- 17. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 16 wherein the axial movement of the adjusting disk controls the condition of the locking means.
- 18. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 17 wherein,
- the adjusting disk is biased axially in one direction to activate the locking means, and motion of the disk in the opposite axial direction against the bias releases the locking means.
- 19. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 15 wherein,
- the housing and control member have openings therethrough coaxial with the axis of the housing for enabling a member onto which the workpiece is to be turned to extend through the head.
- 20. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 15 wherein,
- the control member has a flange which radially overlaps an end of the adjusting disk near the jaw, and
- wherein the flange and said end of the disk have opposed faces and the locking means is disposed between the flange and said end of the disk on said faces.
- 21. An adjustable wrench as defined in claim 20 wherein,
- the locking means includes teeth on the opposed faces that engage one another to activate the locking means and separate from one another to release the locking means.
- 22. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 21 wherein,
- the disk is moved axially with respect to the control member to separate the teeth so as to release the locking means.
- 23. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 22 wherein,
- a dust cover encloses the teeth on the faces.
- 24. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 15 wherein,
- the control member is biased to move away from the adjusting disk.
- 25. An adjustable wrench head for turning a workpiece about an axis comprising:
- a housing, a control member mounted in the housing and having a plurality of radially extending slots,
- a plurality of jaws, one for each slot, mounted on the control member and extending beyond the housing and movable toward and away from the axis, the jaws having a gripping surface for engaging the workpiece and a cam surface,
- an adjusting member surrounding the jaws and having cam surfaces which engage the cam surface of each jaw such that when the adjusting member is rotated the engaging cam surfaces cause the jaws to close, and
- a locking mechanism between the control member and the adjusting member allowing relative rotational motion between the control member and the adjusting member in one direction and preventing relative rotational motion in the other direction.
- 26. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 25 wherein coaxial openings are provided in the housing, the adjusting member and the control member for allowing a shaft around which the workpiece is turned to extend through the housing.
- 27. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 26 wherein the locking mechanism is disabled by moving the control member and the adjusting member axially with respect to one another thereby permitting rotation of the adjusting member relative to the control number so as to open the jaws.
- 28. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 27 further comprising outwardly facing cam surfaces on the adjusting member, inwardly facing cam surfaces on the jaws whereby the outwardly facing cam surfaces on the adjusting member engage the inwardly facing cam surfaces on the jaws for moving the jaws away from the axis when the adjusting member is rotated around the control member so as to open the jaws.
- 29. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 25 further comprising: a flange on the control member, and the locking mechanism includes teeth disposed on the flange and teeth disposed on the adjusting ring.
- 30. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 26 wherein the gripping surface of the jaws is V-shaped and two jaws are provided on the wrench head.
- 31. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 26 wherein three jaws are provided on the wrench head.
- 32. An adjustable wrench head as recited in claim 26 wherein the locking mechanism includes teeth disposed on the control member and teeth disposed on the adjusting member, wherein the teeth on the adjusting member operatively connect with the teeth on the control member to limit the rotational motion between the control member and the adjusting member when the teeth are engaged.
- 33. An adjustable wrench head for turning a workpiece comprising:
- a housing having a chamber, an axis located in the chamber,
- a control member mounted in the chamber and having a lower end, a support surface on the lower end of the control member extending in a direction normal to the axis of the control member, the lower end of the control member having radially extending slots,
- a plurality of jaws, one disposed in each slot, gripping surfaces disposed on the jaws and parallel to the axis, the jaws having inner and outer ends and an intermediate portion, a cam surface disposed on each intermediate portion,
- an annular adjusting-disk surrounding the jaws, the adjusting disk including cam surfaces engaging the intermediate portions of the jaws,
- wherein the cam surfaces on the adjusting disk cause the jaws to move radially inward with respect to the axis when the adjusting disk is rotated in one direction with respect to the control member,
- and a locking mechanism included at an interface between the adjusting disk and control member that prevents the rotation of the adjusting disk in the opposite direction with respect to the control member.
- 34. An adjustable wrench as recited in claim 33 wherein coaxial openings are provided in the housing, control member, and the adjusting disk for enabling a shaft onto which a workpiece is placed to extend through the coaxial openings.
- 35. An adjustable wrench head as defined in claim 34 wherein
- the adjusting disk is axially movable with respect to the control member, and the locking mechanism is disengaged when the adjusting member is axially moved with respect to the control member.
- 36. An adjustable wrench head for turning a work piece about an axis comprising:
- a housing
- a control member rotatably mounted in the housing, a plurality of radially extending slots at the lower end of the control member, and a locking interface disposed on the surface of the control member,
- a plurality of jaws, one for each slot, mounted on the control member and extending beyond the housing, each jaw having a gripping surface facing toward the axis, a first cam surface disposed on each jaw facing outward with respect to the axis and a second cam surface facing inward with respect to the axis,
- an adjusting ring surrounding the jaws and having radially inward facing cam surfaces engaging the first cam surfaces on the jaws for moving the jaws toward the axis when the adjusting member is rotated in one direction, and radially outward facing cam surfaces engaging the second cam surface on the jaw for moving the jaws away from the axis when the jaws are in the opposite direction, a locking interface disposed on the surface of the adjusting ring,
- wherein the locking interface on the control mechanism operatively connects to the locking interface on the adjusting member whereby the the jaws are prevented from moving radially outward with respect to the axis in response to a reactive force applied to the jaws by the workpiece engaged by the jaws.
- 37. An adjustable wrench head as defined in claim 36 wherein
- each of the housing, control member and adjusting member has coaxial openings for enabling a shaft onto which a workpiece engaged by the jaws is to be turned, to extend through the head.
- 38. An adjustable wrench for turning a workpiece comprising:
- a housing having an axis, a plurality of jaws extending beneath the housing and movable towards and away from the axis, said jaws having workpiece engaging surfaces and outwardly facing cam surfaces,
- a guide member mounted in the housing and engaging the jaws to restrict movement of the jaws to radial motion with respect to the axis,
- an adjusting member surrounding the jaws and having inwardly facing cam surfaces engaging the outwardly facing cam surfaces of the jaws for moving the jaws towards the axis when the adjusting member is rotated, and
- a locking mechanism operatively associated with the guide member and adjusting member whereby the jaws are prevented from radially outward movement.
- 39. The adjustable wrench head of claim 38 wherein the adjusting member on and the control member are adapted for axial motion therebetween, the latching mechanism being disengaged by such axial motion between the adjusting member and control member, and inwardly facing cam surfaces on the jaw, and outwardly facing cam surfaces on the adjusting member, engage to move the jaws away from the axis when the adjusting ring is rotated.
- 40. The adjustable wrench of claim 38 further comprising a support surface extending in the normal direction from the lower part of the control member.
