Claims
- 1. An apparatus comprising:
a first portion having a first surface; a second portion having a second surface; a workpiece support surface defined by said first and second surfaces, said first surface rotatable relative to said second surface; a locking mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said first surface relative to said second surface; and an indexing mechanism including a detent mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said first surface relative to said second surface in a plurality of predetermined positions.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said locking mechanism further comprises:
a locking frame pivotably mounted on said first portion, said locking frame including a locking surface, said locking surface selectively frictionally engaging an engagement surface on said second portion; and an actuating mechanism selectively frictionally engaging said locking surface and said engagement surface.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said locking frame further comprises a camming surface at a fixed position relative to said locking surface.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises:
a cam having a cam lobe, said cam pivotably connected relative to said camming surface, said cam lobe selectively engaging said camming surface to move said locking surface to frictionally engage said engagement surface; and a knob fixedly connected to said cam, movement of said knob pivoting said cam relative to said camming surface.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises an axle having a first and second end, said cam fixedly mounted on said first end and said knob fixedly mounted on said second end.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said locking surface is defined by a locking bar and said camming surface is defined by a cam bar, and further wherein said locking frame supports said locking bar in fixed relation to said cam bar.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said locking frame supports said locking surface in pivotal contact with said engagement surface and said cam lobe selectively pivotably engages said cam bar.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said engagement surface further comprises an arcuate surface having a diameter and said locking surface further comprises an arcuate surface having a diameter corresponding to said diameter of said engagement surface.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the apparatus is a woodworking machine having a driven cutting member, the driven cutting member movably attached to said first portion.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said apparatus is a miter saw, the driven cutting member is a saw unit, the first portion is a table portion, and the second portion is a base portion.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said second portion further comprises an indexing surface having at least one indexing slot therein, and further wherein said indexing mechanism further comprises:
a detent body pivotably mounted on said first portion and having a detent pin, said detent pin in selective engagement within said at least one indexing slot; and a detent actuating mechanism in contact with said detent body and selectively moving said detent pin out of engagement with said at least one indexing slot.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a biasing member connected to said first portion, said detent body connected to said biasing member and pivotable relative to said first portion, said biasing member biasing said detent pin into engagement within said at least one indexing slot.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said detent actuating mechanism is pivotably connected to said first portion and further comprises:
a finger forming a tip, said tip contacting said detent body; and a handle, said handle manipulable by an operator.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said detent biasing member further comprises a length of spring steel.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said detent body defines a detent body slot and said tip is seated within said detent body slot.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the apparatus is a woodworking machine having a driven cutting member.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the apparatus is a miter saw, the driven cutting member is a saw unit, said first portion is a table portion, and said second portion is a base portion.
- 18. An adjustment mechanism for pivotably adjusting the position of a first surface of a first portion of an apparatus relative to a second surface of a second portion of the apparatus, the first portion rotatable relative to the second portion, the adjustment mechanism comprising:
a locking mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said first portion relative to said second portion, said locking mechanism including a locking frame pivotably mounted on said first portion and having a locking surface selectively frictionally engaging an engagement surface on said second portion; and an actuating mechanism selectively pivoting said locking surface into frictional engagement with said engagement surface.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein said locking frame further comprises a camming surface in a fixed relation to said locking surface.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises:
a cam having a cam lobe, said cam lobe selectively engaging and displacing said camming surface to frictionally engage said locking surface with said engagement surface; and a knob fixedly connected to said cam, rotation of said knob pivoting said cam relative to said camming surface.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises an axle having a first and second end, said cam fixedly mounted on said first end and said knob fixedly mounted on said second end.
- 22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said locking surface is defined by a lock bar and said camming surface is defined by a cam bar, and further wherein said locking frame supports said locking bar in fixed relation to said cam bar.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein said locking frame pivotably supports said locking surface in selective pivotal contact with said engagement surface and said cam lobe selectively pivotably engage said cam bar.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein said second portion further comprises an indexing surface having at least one indexing slot therein and said indexing mechanism further comprises:
a detent body pivotably mounted on said first portion and having a detent pin, said detent pin in biased engagement with said at least one indexing slot; and a detent actuating mechanism contacting said detent body and selectively moving said detent pin out of engagement with said at least one indexing slot.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 24, further comprising a biasing member fixedly connected to said first portion, said detent body connected to said biasing member and pivotable relative to said first portion, said biasing member biasing said detent pin into engagement within said at least one indexing slot.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein said detent body actuating mechanism is pivotably connected to said first portion and further comprises:
a finger forming a tip, said tip contacting said detent body; and a handle, said handle manipulable by an operator.
- 27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein said detent body defines a detent body slot and said tip is seated within said detent body slot.
- 28. An adjustment mechanism for adjusting the position of a first surface of a first portion relative to a second surface of a second portion, wherein said second portion further comprises an indexing surface having at least one indexing slot therein, the first portion rotatable relative to the second portion, the adjustment mechanism comprising:
an indexing mechanism including a detent mechanism selectively restraining movement of said first surface relative to said second surface in one of a plurality of predetermined positions, said detent mechanism comprising:
a detent body pivotably mounted on said first portion and having a detent pin, said detent pin selectively engaging said at least one indexing slot, and a detent actuating mechanism contacting said detent body and selectively moving said detent pin out of said at least one indexing slot.
- 29. The apparatus of claim 28, further comprising a biasing member fixedly connected to said first portion, said detent body connected to said biasing member, said biasing member biasing said detent pin into engagement with said at least one indexing slot.
- 30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein said detent actuating mechanism urges said detent body away from said indexing surface such that said detent pin is moved out of engagement with said at least one indexing slot.
- 31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein said detent actuating mechanism is pivotably connected to said first portion and further comprises:
a finger forming a tip, said tip contacting said detent body; and a handle, said handle manipulable by an operator.
- 32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein said detent body forms a detent body slot and said tip is operably seated within said detent body slot.
- 33. The apparatus of claim 28, further comprising:
a locking mechanism , said locking mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said first portion relative to said second portion, said locking mechanism including a locking frame pivotably mounted on said first portion and having a locking surface selectively frictionally engaging an engagement surface on said second portion; and an actuating mechanism selectively frictionally engaging said locking surface with said engagement surface.
- 34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein said locking frame further comprises a camming surface at a fixed position relative to said locking surface.
- 35. An adjustment mechanism for pivotably adjusting the workpiece support surface of a woodworking machine, wherein the workpiece support surface includes a first surface and a second surface, said first surface defined by a table portion, said table portion rotatable relative to a base portion defining said second surface, the adjustment mechanism comprising:
a locking mechanism including a locking bar having a locking surface, said locking mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said table portion relative to said base portion; and an indexing mechanism including a detent mechanism, said indexing mechanism selectively restraining rotation of said table portion relative to said base portion in a predetermined plurality of positions.
- 36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein said locking mechanism further comprises:
a locking frame pivotably mounted on said table portion and including a locking surface, said locking surface selectively frictionally engaging an engagement surface on said second portion; and an actuating mechanism selectively frictionally engaging said locking surface with said engagement surface;
- 37. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein said locking frame further comprises:
a cam bar fixedly mounted to said locking frame in a fixed relation to said locking surface, said cam bar including a camming surface;
- 38. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises:
a cam having a cam lobe, said cam pivotably connected relative to said camming surface, said cam lobe selectively engaging said camming surface to move said locking surface to frictionally engage said engagement surface; and a knob fixedly connected to said cam, movement of said knob pivoting said cam relative to said camming surface.
- 39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein said actuating mechanism further comprises an axle having a first and second end, said cam fixedly mounted on said first end and said knob fixedly mounted on said second end.
- 40. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein said locking frame pivotably supports said locking surface in pivotal contact with said engagement surface and said cam lobe is adapted to pivotably engage said cam bar.
- 41. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein said engagement surface is an arcuate surface and said locking surface comprises an arcuate surface corresponding in diameter to said engagement surface.
- 42. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein said base portion further comprises an indexing ring having at least one slot therein and said indexing mechanism further comprises:
a detent body pivotably mounted on said table portion and having a detent pin biased to engage said at least one slot; and a detent actuating mechanism contacting said detent body and selectively unseating said detent pin from said at least one slot.
- 43. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein said detent body further comprises a biasing member connected to said table portion, said detent body mounted on said biasing member, said biasing member biasing said detent pin into engagement within said at least one slot.
- 44. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein said detent actuating mechanism urges said detent body away from said indexing ring such that said detent pin is moved out of engagement with said at least one indexing slot.
- 45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein said detent body actuating mechanism is pivotably connected to said table portion and further comprises:
a finger having a tip, said tip contacting said detent body; and a handle connected to said finger.
