Claims
- 1. A containment system for containing a zone of interest, said containment system comprising:
(a) a plurality of substantially parallel tubes, each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes adjoining at least one other substantially parallel tube so that said plurality of substantially parallel tubes collectively forms a continuous barrier of pre-determined configuration; (b) barrier filler substantially filling each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes; and (c) a plurality of walls, said plurality of walls cooperating with said continuous barrier to substantially contain the zone of interest.
- 2. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprise tunnels, each of said tunnels partly intersecting at least one other tunnel.
- 3. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprises means for guiding at least one adjacent substantially parallel tube into position.
- 4. The containment system according to claim 3, wherein said means for guiding at least one adjacent substantially parallel tube into position comprises complementary interlocking structure, complementary interlocking structure of a first substantially parallel tube cooperating with complementary interlocking structure of a second substantially parallel tube so as to guide said second substantially parallel tube into position.
- 5. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprises a plurality of casing sections.
- 6. The containment system according to claim 5, wherein said plurality of casing sections comprise steel.
- 7. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprises complementary interlocking structure so that said substantially parallel tubes are interlocked with each other, said barrier filler substantially filling interlock spaces formed when said substantially parallel tubes are interlocked.
- 8. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein said predetermined configuration comprises a substantially horizontal plane located underneath the zone of interest.
- 9. The containment system according to claim 8, wherein said plurality of walls comprises four walls, each wall being substantially perpendicular and adjacent to a corresponding edge of said continuous barrier so that said walls cooperate with said continuous barrier to substantially contain the zone of interest.
- 10. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein said predetermined configuration substantially comprises an open-ended channel, and said plurality of walls comprises two walls, each wall being adjacent to an end of said open-ended channel so that said plurality of walls cooperate with said continuous barrier to substantially contain the zone of interest.
- 11. The containment system according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of sensors embedded in said plurality of substantially parallel tubes, wherein said plurality of sensors are in operative communication with a real-time data management system.
- 12. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein said barrier filler comprises at least one of: grout; cement; concrete; bentonite-based material; modified cement; polysiloxane; and acrylic polymers.
- 13. The containment system according to claim 1, wherein said continuous barrier defines at least one opening, and said leachate flows from the zone of interest through said continuous barrier via said opening.
- 14. A waste management system for containing a zone of interest, comprising:
(a) a plurality of parallel tubes connected to each other to collectively form a barrier of pre-determined configuration, said barrier defining at least one opening; (b) barrier filler substantially filling said barrier; (c) a plurality of walls, said plurality of walls cooperating with said barrier to substantially contain the zone of interest; (d) means for collecting leachate from the zone of interest, said means being in fluid communication with said at least one opening of said barrier; and (e) a monitoring system, said monitoring system monitoring at least said barrier and the zone of interest.
- 15. The waste management system according to claim 14, wherein said monitoring system comprises at least a first set and second set of sensors in operative communication with a real-time data management system.
- 16. The waste management system according to claim 15, wherein said first set of sensors monitors the zone of interest and said second set of sensors monitors said barrier.
- 17. The waste management system according to claim 16, wherein said first set of sensors comprises a presence/concentration sensor, a radiation detection and measurement sensor, and a distribution sensor.
- 18. The waste management system according to claim 16, wherein said second set of sensors comprises a joint integrity sensor, a migration sensor, and a predictive sensor.
- 19. The waste management system according to claim 14, wherein said monitoring system additionally monitors said plurality of walls.
- 20. The waste management system according to claim 14, wherein said means for collecting leachate comprises an accumulation tank and associated piping.
- 21. The waste management system according to claim 20, further comprising means for evaluating and processing said leachate, said means for evaluating and processing said leachate being in fluid communication with said accumulation tank.
- 22. A method for installing a containment system for containing a zone of interest, said method comprising the steps of:
(a) emplacing a plurality of substantially parallel tubes adjacent to a zone of interest; (b) interlocking each substantially parallel tube with at least one adjacent substantially parallel tube so that said plurality of substantially parallel tubes collectively form a continuous barrier; and (c) substantially filling said continuous barrier with barrier filler.
- 23. The method according to claim 22, further comprising the step of emplacing a plurality of walls adjacent to the zone of interest so that said plurality of walls cooperate with said continuous barrier to substantially contain the zone of interest.
- 24. The method according to claim 22, wherein said step of emplacing of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes further comprises excavating a plurality of parallel tunnels, each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes being placed in a corresponding parallel tunnel.
- 25. The method according to claim 24, wherein said excavating of each corresponding parallel tunnel and said emplacing of said one of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes in said corresponding parallel tunnel occur substantially simultaneously.
- 26. The method according to claim 24, wherein said excavating of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels proceeds serially.
- 27. The method according to claim 22, wherein said step of substantially filling said barrier comprises filling each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes and filling interlock spaces formed by said interlocked substantially parallel tubes.
- 28. The method according to claim 22, wherein said step of emplacing said substantially parallel tubes proceeds serially.
- 29. The method according to claim 28, wherein said serial emplacing of said substantially parallel tubes and said interlocking of said substantially parallel tubes occur substantially simultaneously.
- 30. The method according to claim 22, further comprising the step of emplacing at least one sensor.
- 31. A method for installing a containment system for containing a zone of interest, the method comprising the steps of:
(a) excavating a plurality of substantially parallel tunnels, said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels being adjacent to the zone of interest and each of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels at least partially intersecting at least one adjacent substantially parallel tunnel; and (b) substantially filling said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels with barrier filler.
- 32. The method according to claim 31, wherein said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels are excavated in groups, all substantially parallel tunnels of a group being excavated substantially simultaneously.
- 33. The method according to claim 32, wherein filling of at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels occurs substantially simultaneously with excavation of said at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels.
- 34. The method according to claim 32, wherein said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels are excavated in pairs.
- 35. The method according to claim 34, wherein at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels is filled substantially simultaneously with excavation of said at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels.
- 36. The method according to claim 32, wherein said plurality of substantially parallel tunnels are excavated in groups of three.
- 37. The method according to claim 36, wherein at least two of said substantially parallel tunnels are filled substantially simultaneously with excavation of said at least two substantially parallel tunnels.
- 38. The method according to claim 31, further comprising the step of emplacing at least one sensor.
- 39. A waste barrier, comprising:
(a) a plurality of substantially parallel tubes of substantially equal length and disposed in a row, each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprising a plurality of casing sections joined end to end, and each of said casing sections having complementary interlocking structure disposed along a longitudinal axis so that each of said casing sections is interlocked with at least one adjacent casing section; and (b) barrier filler substantially filling each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes and substantially filling interlock spaces formed by said complementary interlocking structure when said plurality of casing sections are interlocked.
- 40. The waste barrier according to claim 39, wherein said plurality of casing sections comprise steel.
- 41. The waste barrier according to claim 39, wherein said barrier filler comprises at least one of: grout; cement; concrete; bentonite-based material; modified cement; polysiloxane; and acrylic polymers.
- 42. The waste barrier according to claim 39, wherein at least one of said plurality of casing sections further comprises at least one sensor embedded therein.
- 43. The waste barrier according to claim 42, wherein said at least one sensor comprises at least one of: presence/concentration sensor; radiation detection and measurement sensor; distribution sensor; joint integrity sensor; migration sensor; and predictive sensor.
- 44. A containment barrier to facilitate management of leachate flow from a zone of interest, comprising:
(a) a plurality of substantially parallel tubes at least indirectly connected to each other to collectively form a barrier segment adjacent to the zone of interest; (b) means for managing flow of said leachate through said barrier segment, said means for managing flow being disposed in said barrier segment; and (c) barrier filler substantially filling said barrier segment.
- 45. The containment barrier according to claim 44, wherein said means for managing flow of said leachate comprises at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes defining at least one void, said at least one void being in fluid communication with the zone of interest, said leachate flowing from the zone of interest into said at least one void.
- 46. The containment barrier according to claim 44, wherein said means for managing flow of said leachate comprises at least one perforated portion of at least one of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes, said at least one perforated portion defining at least one void, and said leachate flowing from the zone of interest through said perforated portion into said at least one void.
- 47. The containment barrier according to claim 45, further defining at least one outlet in fluid communication with said at least one void.
- 48. The containment barrier according to claim 47, wherein at least a portion of said leachate selectively flows from said at least one void through said outlet.
- 49. The containment barrier according to claim 45, further comprising at least one filter interposed between the zone of interest and said at least one void.
- 50. The containment barrier according to claim 44, further comprising a monitoring system for monitoring the zone of interest and said means for managing flow of said leachate.
- 51. The containment barrier according to claim 50, wherein said monitoring system comprises at least one sensor in operative communication with a real-time data management system.
- 52. The containment barrier according to claim 44, wherein each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes comprises a plurality of casing sections.
- 53. The containment barrier according to claim 52, wherein said plurality of casing sections comprise steel.
- 54. The containment system according to claim 44, wherein said barrier filler comprises at least one of: grout; cement; concrete; bentonite-based material; modified cement; polysiloxane; and acrylic polymers.
- 55. A containment system for containing a zone of interest, the containment system comprising:
(a) barrier means for controlling migration of leachate from the zone of interest; and (b) a plurality of walls, said plurality of walls being formed separately from said barrier means and cooperating with said barrier means to substantially contain the zone of interest.
- 56. The containment system according to claim 55, wherein said barrier means comprises a barrier formed of a plurality of substantially parallel tubes at least indirectly connected to each other, each of said plurality of substantially parallel tubes being substantially filled with a barrier filler.
- 57. The containment system according to claim 56, wherein each of said plurality of connected substantially parallel tubes comprises a plurality of casing sections.
- 58. The containment system according to claim 57, wherein said plurality of casing sections comprise steel.
- 59. The containment system according to claim 56, further comprising a monitoring system for monitoring the zone of interest and said barrier means.
- 60. The containment system according to claim 55, wherein said plurality of walls comprises a plurality of connected tubes, wherein said plurality of walls are continuously connected with said barrier means.
- 61. A containment barrier for monitoring and containing a zone of interest, comprising:
(a) a plurality of casing sections arranged in a series of substantially parallel tubes, said plurality of substantially parallel tubes collectively forming a barrier segment; (b) a plurality of sensors embedded in said plurality of casing sections; (c) barrier filler substantially filling said plurality of casing sections; and (d) a real-time data management system in operative communication with said plurality of sensors.
- 62. A containment barrier according to claim 61, wherein said plurality of sensors comprises at least a first and second set of sensors.
- 63. A containment barrier according to claim 62, wherein said first set of sensors is located on exterior surfaces of said plurality of casing sections and said second set of sensors is located internal to said plurality of casing sections.
- 64. A containment barrier according to claim 63, wherein said first set of sensors monitors the zone of interest and comprises a presence/concentration sensor, a radiation detection and measurement sensor, and a distribution sensor.
- 65. The waste management system according to claim 63, wherein said second set of sensors monitors said plurality of casing sections and said barrier filler, and comprises a joint integrity sensor, a migration sensor, and a predictive sensor.
- 66. A casing section for use in constructing containment barriers, said casing section comprising:
(a) a body; and (b) at least one sensor embedded in said body.
- 67. The casing section according to claim 66, wherein said casing section comprises steel.
- 68. The casing section according to claim 66, further comprising complementary interlocking structure to interlock with complementary interlocking structure of an adjacent casing section.
- 69. The casing section according to claim 66, wherein said at least one sensor is attached to an exterior surface of said casing section.
- 70. The casing section according to claim 66, wherein said at least one sensor is located inside said casing section.
- 71. The casing section according to claim 66, wherein said at least one sensor comprises at least one of: presence/concentration sensor; radiation detection and measurement sensor; distribution sensor; joint integrity sensor; migration sensor; and predictive sensor.
- 72. The casing section according to claim 66, wherein at least a portion of said casing section is perforated to permit flow of leachate from a zone of interest into said casing section.
