Claims
- 1. A filter element comprising:
(a) a tubular extension of pleated media defining an open filter interior; (b) a first end cap at one end of said tubular extension of pleated media;
(i) said first end cap having an aperture in communication with said open filter interior; (c) a second end cap at an end of said tubular extension of media opposite of said first end cap; (i) said second end cap having an aperture in communication with said open filter interior; and (d) a region of fibrous media oriented in said first end cap aperture;
(i) said region of fibrous media including first and second, opposite flow faces;
(A) said second flow face being oriented toward said open filter interior; and (B) said first flow face being oriented away from said open filter interior.
- 2. A filter element according to claim 1 wherein:
(a) said first end cap has an outer, annular surface comprising a polymeric material positioned to form a first radial seal with a housing construction, when the filter element is operably positioned in a housing construction.
- 3. A filter element according to claim 2 wherein:
(a) said first end cap outer, annular surface comprises a compressible material.
- 4. A filter element according to claim 1 wherein:
(a) said second end cap has an outer, annular surface comprising a polymeric material oriented to form a second radial seal with a housing construction, when the filter element is operably positioned in a housing construction.
- 5. A filter element according to claim 4 wherein:
(a) said second end cap outer, annular surface comprises a compressible material.
- 6. A filter element according to claim 1 wherein:
(a) said pleated media has a length extending generally between said first and second end caps; and (b) each of said first and second flow faces is oriented generally normal to said length of said pleated media.
- 7. A filter element according to claim 1 further including:
(a) a frame construction holding said region of fibrous media.
- 8. A filter element according to claim 7 wherein:
(a) said first end cap comprises polyurethane; (b) said frame construction is potted within said first end cap; (c) said region of fibrous media comprises a fibrous media having a free state solidity no more than 1.8% and an average fiber diameter of no more than 25 microns; and (d) the filter element further including:
(i) an outer liner supporting the tubular extension of media and extending between said first and second end caps; and (ii) an inner liner supporting the tubular extension of media and extending between said first and second end caps.
- 9. A filter element according to claim 8 wherein:
(a) said frame construction includes at least first and second frame pieces encapsulating said region of fibrous media therebetween.
- 10. A filter element according to claim 9 wherein:
(a) said inner liner and said second frame piece are an integral, single piece construction.
- 11. A filter arrangement comprising:
(a) a housing construction defining an interior and having a gas flow inlet, a gas flow outlet, and a liquid flow outlet; (b) a filter element operably positioned in said housing construction; said filter element including:
(i) a tubular extension of media defining an open filter interior; (ii) a first end cap at one end of said tubular extension of media; said first end cap having an aperture in communication with said open filter interior; (iii) a region of fibrous media oriented in said first end cap aperture;
(A) said region of fibrous media being constructed and arranged to separate at least a portion of a liquid phase from gases with an entrained liquid; (c) a gas flow direction arrangement constructed and arranged to direct gas flow from said gas flow inlet, through said region of fibrous media, into said open filter interior, through said tubular extension of media, and out through said gas flow outlet; and (d) a liquid collection arrangement constructed and arranged to direct liquid collected by said region of fibrous media to said liquid flow outlet.
- 12. A filter arrangement according to claim 11 wherein:
(a) said filter element is removable and replaceable in said housing construction.
- 13. A filter arrangement according to claim 12 further including:
(a) a frame construction holding said region of fibrous media; and (b) wherein said first end cap comprises a polymeric material;
(i) said frame construction being potted within said first end cap.
- 14. A filter arrangement according to claim 12 wherein:
(a) said first end cap has an outer, annular surface comprising a polymeric material positioned to form a first radial seal with said housing construction; and (b) said second end cap has an outer, annular surface comprising a polymeric material oriented to form a second radial seal with said housing construction.
- 15. A filter arrangement according to claim 14 further including:
(a) an outer liner supporting the tubular extension of media and extending between said first and second end caps; (b) and wherein said first and second end caps each comprises a compressible, polymeric material;
(i) said first radial seal being formed by compression of said first end cap between and against said housing construction and said outer liner; and (ii) said second radial seal being formed by compression of said second end cap between and against said housing construction and said outer liner.
- 16. A filter arrangement according to claim 15 wherein:
(a) said housing construction includes a drain construction in liquid communication with said liquid flow outlet; (b) said housing construction includes a body member and a cover removable therefrom; and (c) the filter arrangement further includes:
(i) a regulator valve assembly in gas flow communication with said gas flow inlet.
- 17. A diesel engine blow-by recovery system comprising:
(a) a diesel engine having a size of at least 50 HP and a crankcase; (b) a filter arrangement in gas flow communication with said crankcase; said filter arrangement including:
(i) a housing having a gas flow inlet arrangement a gas flow outlet arrangement and a liquid flow outlet arrangement; (ii) a filter element operably positioned in said housing and including:
(A) a tubular extension of media defining an open filter interior; (B) a first end cap at one end of said tubular extension of media; said first end cap having an aperture in communication with said open filter interior; (iii) a region of fibrous media oriented in said first end cap aperture; (c) a gas flow direction arrangement constructed and arranged to direct gas flow from said gas flow inlet arrangement, through said region of fibrous media, into said open filter interior, through said tubular extension of media, and out through said gas flow outlet arrangement; and (d) a liquid collection arrangement constructed and arranged to direct liquid collected by said region of fibrous media to said liquid flow outlet arrangement.
- 18. A system according to claim 17 further including:
(a) an engine air intake system for taking in air to said engine;
(i) said system including a gas flow construction configured and arranged to direct gas flow from said gas flow outlet arrangement to said engine air intake system.
- 19. A method of treating diesel engine blow-by gases; the method comprising steps of:
(a) directing blow-by gases from a diesel engine to an coalescer filter; the coalescer filter being mounted in an interior of a tubular pleated media filter; (b) removing at least a portion of a liquid phase from the gases with the coalescer filter as a collected liquid; (c) after said step of removing at least a portion of a liquid phase, directing the gases through the tubular pleated media filter; (d) filtering at least a portion of particulates from the gases with the pleated media filter; and (e) after said step of removing at least a portion of the collected liquid phase, directing drainage of at least a portion of the collected liquid from the coalescer filter, along the interior of the tubular pleated media filter, to a drain construction.
- 20. A method according to claim 19 wherein:
(a) said step of directing drainage includes draining by gravity the collected liquid along an inner tube oriented within the interior of the tubular pleated media filter.
