Claims
- 1. An air circulation system for generally enclosed structures such as homes comprising:
- (a) an enclosed structure having at least a floor and enclosing walls and roof forming within an interior living area;
- (b) a void air space subsurface to said floor;
- (c) blower means connecting said living area and said void air space for moving air from said living area to said void air space;
- (d) return line means for returning air from said void space to said living space;
- (e) structural means in said void air space and communicating with said floor for facilitating heat exchange between said floor and said void air space and between said void air space and the ground therebelow, said structural means comprising at least in part a plurality of interfacing self-contained elements containing particulate expanded clay aggregate and means adjacent said elements for biasing air flow through said interfacing elements, said blower means and said return line means communicating with said interfacing elements for air flow transfer therewith.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said interfacing elements are individual bag envelopes containing the aggregate particles, said envelopes each having air openings over at least a portion of the surface thereof.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said bag envelopes are mesh bag envelopes.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said interfacing elements comprise at least in part a plurality of nylon mesh bag envelopes filled with a mass of particulate expanded clay aggregate.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said mass of particulate expanded clay aggregate has a greater total void space by volume than the total volume occupied by the aggregate particles themselves.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said mass of particulate expanded clay aggregate is comprised of expanded clay aggregates having a grain size between about 0.5 and about 1.5 inches.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said floor includes a concrete slab and wherein insulation means extends downwardly into the earth around the general perimeter of said slab to minimize lateral heat exchange as between the earth subsurface to said void air space and the earth outside the general perimeter of said enclosed structure.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein said insulation extends down at least to the frost line.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said insulation includes plastic foam insulation.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least said interfacing elements are encased in a sheath of plastic film.
- 11. An air circulation and structural support system for use with a generally enclosed structure having at least enclosing walls, a roof and a slab/floor, which structural system comprises:
- (a) an expanded clay lightweight aggregate mass having void air spaces therein enabling air to pass through said mass;
- (b) film sheet enveloping said mass for preventing water flow into said mass from the exterior;
- (c) means adapted to receive a flow of air from the interior of the enclosed structure and to distribute the air into said aggregate mass at generally interior locations; and
- (d) means adapted to receive flowing air at locations around the periphery of said mass and to distribute the air at peripheral locations within the interior of the enclosed structure;
- said mass being positioned on the site for said structure and adapted to furnish support to the slab/floor thereof; and said aggregate mass being comprised at least in part of a plurality of interfacing self-contained aggregate containing elements having openings therein allowing air to freely flow into and out of said elements.
- 12. The structural system of claim 11 further comprising blower means for receiving air within the interior of the enclosed structure and transforming the received air into said flow of air.
- 13. The structural system of claim 11 further comprising:
- (i) a slab/floor supported by said mass; and
- (ii) insulation means extending downwardly into the earth around the general perimeter of said slab/floor to minimize lateral heat exchange as between the earth subsurface to said mass and the earth outside the general perimeter of said slab/floor.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said insulation extends down at least to the frost line.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein said insulation includes plastic foam insulation.
