Claims
- 1. A gas compression system comprising:
a plurality of centrifugal gas compressors arranged in series for stepwise gas compression and mounted on a frame for portability; a plurality of air coolers supported from said frame and mounted to the discharge of at least one of said compressors to allow the compressed gas to be cooled therein; and an air mover supported from said frame to force cooling air to flow in parallel through said air coolers for air cooling the compressed gas.
- 2. The gas compression system of claim 1, wherein:
said at least one compressor comprises at least 3 compressors; said plurality of air coolers comprises at least 3 coolers with one air cooler positioned after the discharge of each of said compressors: said gas mover comprises at least one fan; said air coolers mounted over said compressors within a footprint occupied by said compressors; said fan forcing air in parallel through said at least 3 air coolers.
- 3. The gas compression system of claim 2, further comprising:
a lubricating oil system for said compressors further comprising a forced air oil cooler; said at least air 3 coolers and said oil cooler are all mounted above said compressors such that said fan can push cooling air in parallel though said air coolers.
- 4. The gas compression system of claim 1, wherein:
said air coolers are mounted substantially horizontally above said compressors.
- 5. The gas compression system of claim 1, wherein:
said cooling air is discharged vertically.
- 6. The gas compression system of claim 1, wherein:
said compressed gas and said cooling gas make a single pass through said air coolers.
- 7. The gas compression system of claim 1, wherein:
said coolers comprise a plate-fin design.
- 8. The gas compression system of claim 7, wherein:
said air coolers are produced by a vacuum brazing technique.
- 9. The gas compression system of claim 2, wherein:
said compressors which further comprise at least 3 compressors, said plurality of air coolers further comprises at least 4 air coolers and said air mover further comprises at least one fan, are surrounded by a housing, said fan drawing air through said housing and over said compressors prior to pushing cooling air in parallel through said air coolers, one of which cools lubricating oil for said compressors.
- 10. A gas compression system comprising:
a plurality of centrifugal gas compressors arranged in series for stepwise gas compression and mounted on a frame for portability; a plurality of air coolers supported from said frame and mounted to the discharge of at least one of said compressors to allow the compressed gas to be cooled therein; and an air mover supported from said frame to force cooling air through said air coolers for air cooling the compressed gas; said frame supports said compressors, said plurality of air coolers and said air mover within a footprint that is no larger than a frame, which would support said compressors equipped instead with a plurality of liquid coolers of comparable capacity instead of said air coolers and said air mover.
- 11. The gas compression system of claim 10, further comprising:
a plurality of liquid coolers mounted to the discharge of a plurality of said compressors, said liquid coolers comprising a housing and a removable tubing bundle; said housings of said liquid coolers, with said bundles removed, directing compressed air therethrough to said plurality of air coolers that are fed by said air mover.
- 12. The gas compression system of claim 11, wherin:
said compressors can operate in a water cooled mode with said plurality of liquid coolers and occupy a footprint no larger than when operating in an air cooled mode using said plurality of air coolers supplied by said air mover.
- 13. The gas compression system of claim 11, further comprising:
a water cooled oil cooler as part of a lubrication system for said compressors, said compressors comprising at least 3 compressors, said plurality of liquid coolers comprising at least 3 liquid coolers with one mounted to the discharge of each of said compressors; said plurality of air coolers supplied by said air mover comprises at least 4 coolers mounted above said compressors to assume the cooling task previously handled by said oil cooler and said liquid coolers, as compressed gas from each stage of compression flows through a respective said liquid cooler housing with its tube bundle removed to a respective said air cooler.
- 13. The gas compression system of claim 10, wherein:
said air mover comprises at least one fan; air moved by said fan through said air coolers also cools said compressors by passing the air around them before the air enters said air coolers.
- 14. The gas compression system of claim 10, wherein:
said fan is mounted before said coolers to push air through said coolers.
- 15. The gas compression system of claim 10, wherein:
said fan is mounted after said air coolers to pull air through said air coolers.
- 16. The gas compression system of claim 26, wherein:
said fan comprises an associated filter such that air passing through said air coolers is filtered.
- 17. The gas compression system of claim 13, wherein:
said fan comprises a control system to vary the cooling capacity of the combination of said fan and said air coolers to hold a pre-selected temperature of the compressed gas at a pre-selected location.
- 18. The gas compression system of claim 17, wherein:
said controller regulates the operation of said fan.
- 19. A gas compression system comprising:
a plurality of centrifugal gas compressors arranged in series for stepwise gas compression and mounted on a frame for portability; a plurality of air coolers supported from said frame and mounted to the discharge of at least one of said compressors to allow the compressed gas to be cooled therein; and an air mover supported from said frame to force cooling air through said air coolers for air cooling the compressed gas; said air mover comprises at least one fan; said cooling air, after passing through said air coolers and being warmed is moved by said fan to another location for use of the energy in said warmed air therein.
- 20. The gas compression system of claim 19, further comprising:
a lubricating oil circulation system for said compressors further comprising an oil cooler; said fan providing cooling air to said oil cooler as well as said plurality of air coolers.
- 21. The gas compression system of claim 20, wherein:
said plurality of air coolers and said oil cooler are adjacent to each other and disposed in a common substantially horizontal plane above said compressors for parallel flow from said fan moving cooling air there through.
- 22. The gas compression system of claim 19, wherein:
at least one of said compressors compresses nitrogen while at least one other compressor compresses air with said plurality of air coolers supplied by said air mover and mounted over said compressors.
- 23. The gas compression system of claim 47, wherin:
said compressors are driven by an electric motor;
said air mover is powered separately from said compressors; and further comprising; a common gearbox through which said compressors are driven, said gearbox further containing a lubricating oil reservoir for said compressors.
