Claims
- 1. In a system for conveying an elongated string of air-filled packing cushions formed between transverse seal lines: an elongated duct having inlet and outlet ends, means for feeding a continuous string of the air-filled cushions into the duct at the inlet end with the string extending longitudinally of the duct and the seal lines extending transversely, an inlet for air in a wall of the duct near the inlet end, and a baffle near the inlet opening for directing air passing through the opening in a longitudinal direction within the duct to establish a flow of air for conveying the string of cushions through the duct toward the outlet end.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the means for feeding the string of cushions into the duct comprises a machine for making the string of cushions.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the duct comprises a first section which extends vertically, and a second section which extends upwardly from the first section at an angle on the order of 135 degrees.
- 4. The system of claim 1 including a blower mounted externally of the duct for directing air into the duct through the inlet opening.
- 5. In a system for providing air-filled packing cushions: a machine for sealing two elongated layers of flexible material together along transverse lines with air in chambers between the lines to form a continuous string of air-filled packing cushions, an elongated duct positioned for receiving the string of cushions from the machine with the string extending longitudinally of the duct and the seal lines extending transversely, an inlet opening for air in a wall of the duct, a baffle near the inlet opening for directing air passing through the opening in longitudinally within the duct to establish a flow of air for conveying the string of cushions through the duct, and a bin for receiving the string of cushions from the duct.
- 6. The system of claim 5 wherein the means for feeding the string of cushions into the duct comprises a machine for making the string of cushions.
- 7. The system of claim 5 wherein the duct comprises a first section which extends vertically, and a second section which extends upwardly from the first section at an angle on the order of 135 degrees.
- 8. The system of claim 5 including a blower mounted externally of the duct for directing air into the duct through the inlet opening.
- 9. In a system for conveying an elongated string of air-filled packing cushions formed between transverse seal lines: an elongated duct having inlet and outlet ends, means for feeding a continuous string of the air-filled cushions into the duct at the inlet end with the string extending longitudinally of the duct and the seal lines extending transversely, an inlet opening in a wall of the duct near the inlet end, a blower mounted externally of the duct for blowing air into the duct through the inlet opening, and an inclined baffle within the duct for directing air from the blower in a longitudinal direction to convey the string of cushions toward the outlet end.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the baffle is inclined at an angle on the order of 10 degrees relative to the wall of the duct.
- 11. The system of claim 9 wherein the blower is mounted on the wall, with the outlet of the blower in direct communication with the inlet opening.
- 12. The system of claim 9 wherein the means for feeding the string of cushions into the duct comprises a machine for making the string of cushions.
- 13. The system of claim 9 wherein the duct comprises a first section which extends vertically, and a second section which extends upwardly from the first section at an angle on the order of 135 degrees.
- 14. In a system for providing air-filled packing cushions for use in a shipping carton: a frame, a vertically extending duct mounted on the frame and having an open lower end and an open upper end, a machine positioned near the lower end of the duct for making a continuous string of air-filled packing cushions and feeding the string of cushions into the duct through the lower end, an inlet opening in a wall of the duct near the lower end, a blower for blowing air into the duct through the inlet opening, means for directing air from the blower in an upward direction within the duct to create a flow of air which carries the string of cushions upwardly through the duct and out the upper end, a bin mounted on the frame for receiving the string of cushions from the duct and holding the cushions until they are used, a stand positioned beneath the bin for supporting a carton in which the cushions are to be used, and an opening in the lower portion of the bin through which the string of cushions can pass to the carton.
- 15. The system of claim 14 wherein the means for directing air from the blower in an upward direction comprises a baffle plate mounted in the duct adjacent to the opening.
- 16. The system of claim 14 wherein the baffle plate is inclined at an angle on the order of 10 degrees relative to the wall of the duct.
- 17. The system of claim 14 wherein an upper portion of the duct is inclined toward the bin.
- 18. The system of claim 14 wherein the bin is in the form of a hopper having an open top and a tapered lower portion.
- 19. In a system for providing air-filled packing cushions for use in a shipping carton: a machine for making a continuous string of air-filled packing cushions, a vertically extending duct mounted on a frame near the machine, with the string of cushions being fed from the machine directly into the lower end of the duct, means for creating an upwardly directed flow of air within the duct to convey the string of cushions through the duct, a bin mounted on the frame for receiving the string of cushions from the duct and holding the cushions until they are used, and a stand positioned beneath the bin for supporting a carton in which the cushions are used.
