Claims
- 1. A particle blockage sensor system comprising:
- a particle flow path having a cross-sectional area;
- a piezoelectric sensor element having a flexible surface; and,
- means to support and align the flexible surface of said piezoelectric sensor element in the particle flow path, to thereby cause a number of particles flowing in the particle path to impact said piezoelectric sensor element.
- 2. The particle blockage sensor system of claim 1, wherein the particle flow path cross-sectional area is reduced about seven percent by the piezoelectric sensor element being supported therein.
- 3. The particle blockage sensor system of claim 1, wherein the flexible surface of the piezoelectric sensor element is arcuate in shape.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a slave unit connected to said piezoelectric sensor element, said slave unit comprising:
- means to output a binary signal, responsive to an analog signal being generated by said piezoelectric sensor element when struck by a particle, indicative of whether a particle has struck the piezoelectric sensor element within a given time period.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, further including a band pass filter and amplifier connected between said piezoelectric sensor element and said means to output a binary signal.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, further including a microprocessor connected to said piezoelectric sensor element so as to form a particle blockage monitoring system.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein a slave unit means, which forms a binary signal indicative of whether a particle has struck said piezoelectric sensor element within a given time period, is connected intermediate said microprocessor and said piezoelectric sensor element in order to increase immunity of the particle blockage monitoring system to noise.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6, and further including a display, wherein said microprocessor tabulates the number of particles detected by each piezoelectric sensor element over multiple data collection periods and displays on the display the number of particles detected by each piezoelectric sensor associated with a particular header.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein said microprocessor determines, from the number of hits detected by each piezoelectric sensor element over multiple data collection periods, a particle flow status for a respective particle flow path associated with each piezoelectric sensor element and displays said particle flow status for multiple particle flow paths on said display.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 6, and further including a display, wherein said microprocessor tabulates the number of particles detected from a piezoelectric sensor element over multiple data collection periods, determines the number of particles per unit of time in the particle flow path associated with the piezoelectric sensor element, and displays the results on said display.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said microprocessor also tabulates the number of particles flowing in all or selected ones of multiple particle flow paths, determines the total number of particles flowing per unit of time, and displays the results on said display.
- 12. A particle blockage monitor system comprising:
- a microprocessor;
- one or more particle sensor elements, each having a flexible surface which provides an output signal when struck by a particle;
- one or more comparators, each having a positive and negative input and an output, one of said inputs of each comparator being connected to receive a signal representative of the output from a respective sensor element;
- a first shift register having, as at least one data input, a signal output from said one or more comparators;
- means to shift the data in the first shift register serially into the microprocessor; and
- a second shift register connected in series to the first shift register, wherein the means to shift data in the first shift register is connected to the second shift register so as to also shift data in the second shift register.
- 13. A particle blockage monitor system comprising:
- a microprocessor;
- one or more particle sensor elements, each having a flexible surface which provides an output signal when struck by a particle;
- a plurality of unit-bit memory elements, each unit-bit memory element receiving an input from a respective particle sensor element and having an output;
- a multiple-bit memory element, capable of receiving and storing the respective outputs from said plurality of unit-bit memory elements; and,
- means to serially transfer data contained in said multiple-bit memory element into said microprocessor.
