Claims
- 1. A VCT device including a housing and a rotor disposed to rotate relative to each other, the housing having at least one cavity disposed to be divided by a vane rigidly attached to the rotor, the vane dividing the cavity into a first chamber and a second chamber, the device further including passages connecting the first and the second chamber facilitating the oscillation of the vane within the cavity by transferring fluid between the first chamber and the second chamber, the device comprising:
a locking member substantially disposed within a closure in the housing, the locking member locking the housing and the rotor free from relative rotation and independent of fluid flow; and at least one vent passage disposed between either the first or the second chamber and the closure in the housing; thereby air within the chamber is purged and noise stopped.
- 2. The device of claim 1 further comprising a fluid passage supplying fluid for unlocking the locking member.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the locking member is a lock pin having elements thereon disposed to stop fluid communication between either the first or the second chamber and the closure in the housing.
- 4. In a VCT device including a housing and a rotor disposed to rotate relative to each other, the housing having at least one cavity disposed to be divided by a vane rigidly attached to the rotor, the vane dividing the cavity into a first chamber and a second chamber, the device further including passages connecting the first and the second chamber facilitating the oscillation of the vane within the cavity by transferring fluid between the first chamber and the second chamber, a method comprising the steps of:
providing a locking member substantially disposed within a closure in the housing, the locking member locking the housing and the rotor free from relative rotation and independent of fluid flow; and providing at least one vent passage disposed between either the first or the second chamber and the closure in the housing; thereby air within the chamber is purged and noise stopped.
- 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising providing a fluid passage supplying fluid for unlocking the locking member.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the locking member is a lock pin having elements thereon disposed to stop fluid communication between either the first or the second chamber and the closure in the housing.
