Claims
- 1. Airbag device with a first and a second airbag flap (3, 4), with the following features:
a) the airbag flaps (3, 4) each have a first area (5, 7) to cover an exit opening of an airbag (2); b) the airbag flaps (3, 4) each have a second area (6, 8), bordering the space to hold the airbag (2) that tapers toward the exit opening when the airbag flaps (3, 4) is closed; c) other ends of the second areas (6, 8) of the airbag flaps (3, 4), which are remote from the exit opening, are supported on a joint (15, 17); d) the airbag (2) exerts a pressure on the second areas (6, 8) of the airbag flaps (3, 4) after the triggering of the airbag during deployment, so that the airbag flaps (3, 4) effects an essentially rotary movement (16, 18) around the joints (15, 17) to free the exit opening; e) at least a part of the first areas (5, 7) of the airbag flaps (3, 4) can be pushed under an instrument panel (1) or another part of interior trim of the motor vehicle when the airbag (2) is released, as the result of the essentially rotary movement.
- 2. Airbag device according to claim 1, in which the first areas of the airbag flaps have an ornamental cover (10), and the ornamental cover together with the first areas (5, 7) are pushed, at least in part, under an instrument panel (1) or another part of the interior trim of a motor vehicle during release of the airbag.
- 3. Airbag device according to claim 2, which when closed forms a gap between a boundary of the first areas (5, 7) and a boundary of the instrument panel (1), and end areas (11, 12) of the ornamental cover (10) run through the gap to the back side of the instrumental panel (1) or the part of the interior trim of the motor vehicle.
- 4. Airbag device according to claim 3, in which the end areas of the ornamental cover (10) have a curve-shaped profile on the sides facing the edges of the instrument panel, in order to assist moving the first areas, together with the ornamental cover (10), under the edges of the instrument panel, or under the other part of the interior trim of the motor vehicle, after a triggering of the airbag.
- 5. Airbag device according to claim 1 with a second airbag flap (4) is constructed such that the second airbag flap (4) can essentially effect a rotary movement (18), in a direction opposed the rotatory movement (16) of the first airbag flap (3) to free the exit opening.
- 6. Airbag device according to claim 1, in which the space is designed essentially in the shape of a funnel.
- 7. Airbag device according to claim 1, in which a gap remains between the first area of the first airbag flap (3) and the first area of the second airbag flap (4) when closed, and a breaking point of an ornamental cover (10), covering the first area of the first airbag flap and the first area of the second airbag flap, is located over the gap.
- 8. Airbag device according to claim 1, with a housing (19, 20) to hold the airbag flaps so that the rotary movement of the first airbag flap is limited by a stop on the housing.
- 9. Method to open airbag flaps, which have first areas to cover an exit opening of the airbag, and second areas on which an airbag deploying after a triggering exerts a pressure, wherein a space to hold the airbag, tapering toward the exit opening when the airbag flaps are closed, is formed by the second areas, with the following steps:
triggering of the airbag; exertion of a pressure on the second area of the airbag flaps by the deploying airbag; effecting a rotary movement of the airbag flaps to free the exit opening.
- 10. Method according to claim 9, wherein the rotary movement is effected around an axis which lies at one of the ends of the second areas remote from the exit opening.
- 11. Method according to claim 9, wherein the first areas are pushed, at least in part, under an instrument panel or another part of interior trim of the motor vehicle during release of the airbag.
- 12. Method according to claim 9, wherein an ornamental cover of the first areas is also pushed under the instrument panel.
- 13. Method according to claim 9, wherein the airbag deploys into the space after the airbag is triggered, so that the airbag flaps effect essentially rotary movements in opposite directions to free the exit opening.
- 14. Method according to claim 13, wherein a gap remains between the airbag flaps when closed, and the ornamental cover, running above the first areas, has a breaking point above the gap so that after the airbag is triggered, the ornamental cover is separated by the pressure of the deploying airbag on the breaking point.
- 15. Method according to claim 9, wherein the movement of at least the first airbag flap is limited by an airbag housing.
- 16. Method according to claim 9, wherein the ornamental cover is connected in an end area with an underside of the instrument panel, in a detachable manner, so that after the triggering of the airbag the detachable connection is broken so that the ornamental cover, together with the first area, is pushed at least in part under the instrument panel or a part of the interior trim of the motor vehicle.
- 17. Method according to claim 9, in which the movement of at least the first airbag flap proceeds essentially outside the passenger space, after the airbag is triggered.
