Claims
- 1. An airborne system for use in conjunction with a marker beacon, said marker beacon having a flare for visual and infrared aid to terminal homing to said marker beacon, said airborne system comprising:
- detection means for detecting said marker beacon upon receipt of first predetermined radio signals;
- direction determination means for determining the direction of said marker beacon upon receipt of said first predetermined radio signals by said detection means;
- transponder means for querying said marker beacon as to its range upon receipt of said first predetermined radio signals by said detection means;
- range determination means for determining the slant range of said marker beacon upon receipt of second predetermined radio signals; and
- flare activation means for transmitting a flare activation signal for activating said flare of said marker beacon upon said range determination means determining said slant range to be not more than a predetermined distance.
- 2. An airborne system according to claim 1 wherein said detection means further comprises:
- a pair of receive antennas for receiving identification code group signals;
- a dual receiver having a pair of receiver networks with each of said networks connected to a respective member of said pair of receive antennas;
- a summer connected to said dual receiver and having summing means for summing received demodulated signals;
- a pulse width discriminator connected to said summer and having pulse width discriminating means for checking the pulse width of the summed signals;
- a one-shot multivibrator connected to said pulse width discriminator, said one-shot multivibrator having signalling means for providing a one-shot multivibrator output signal when the pulse width of the summed signals meet predetermined criteria; and
- a correlator connected to receive said output signal from said multivibrator, said correlator having identification code means for determining if said received signal meets an identification code criteria and for providing a correlator output signal if such criteria is met.
- 3. An airborne system according to claim 2 wherein said transponder means further comprises:
- said correlator further having last pulse identification means for recognizing the last pulse in the identification code group and sending out a signal in response to said last pulse;
- a distance interrogation encoder connected to receive said last pulse from said correlator and having distance interrogation means for generating a distance interrogation code in response to receiving said last pulse; and
- modulation and transmission means connected to said distance interrogation encoder for modulating and transmitting said distance interrogation code.
- 4. An airborne system according to claim 2 wherein said direction determination means further comprises:
- gating means connected to said multivibrator and said correlator, said gating means for providing a gating signal upon receipt of signals from both said one-shot multivibrator signalling means and said correlator;
- a pair of delay circuits with each delay circuit connected to respective networks of said dual receiver;
- a pair of peak detection and store means connected to said gating means and to respective members of said pair of delay circuits for providing output signals indicative of the peak value of the input from the delay circuits upon receipt of a signal from said gating means;
- a summer connected to receive said output signals from said pair of peak detection and store means, said summer having summing means for determining the difference of said received signals and providing an output signal indicative of said difference; and
- at least one of a direction indicator and a guidance computer/autopilot connected to receive said summer output signal.
- 5. An airborne system according to claim 3 wherein said range determination means further comprises:
- said distance interrogation encoder further having fiduciary pulse means for generating a fiduciary pulse signal upon completion of generation of distance interrogation code;
- said correlator and a time comparator connected to said distance interrogation encoder for receiving said fiduciary pulse signal;
- said correlator further having beacon response code recognition means connected to said encoder for receiving said fiduciary pulse and connected to said multivibrator for receiving said multivibrator's output signal and for generating a signal in response to receipt of both signals; and
- said time comparator further connected to said beacon response code recognition means, said time comparator having timing means for determining the time between receipt of said fiduciary pulse and said signal from said beacon response code recognition means, said time comparator further having range determination means for converting said time to distance.
- 6. An airborne system according to claim 5 wherein said flare activation means further comprises:
- said time comparator further comprises generating means for generating a trigger pulse upon said distance being below a predetermined value;
- a flare ignition encoder connected to receive said time comparator trigger pulse, said flare ignition encoder having flare ignition encoding means for generating a flare ignition code signal upon receipt of said time comparator trigger pulse; and
- modulation and transmission means connected to said flare ignition encoder for modulating and transmitting said flare ignition code signal.
- 7. An airborne system according to claim 6 wherein said flare activation means further comprises:
- a control unit, said control unit comprising manual triggering pulse means for manually generating a trigger pulse; and
- said flare ignition encoder connected to receive said manually triggered pulse and said flare ignition encoding means generating said flare ignition code signal upon receipt of said control unit trigger pulse.
