Claims
- 1. A subsystem for identifying leakage in a system supplying a gaseous mixture, including fuel evaporated in a fuel tank, from an accumulation container to a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, comprising:
- a first passageway for directing a flow of said gaseous mixture between said container and said combustion chamber;
- a pressure sensor disposed in said first passageway for sensing a pressure in said first passageway;
- a temperature sensor disposed in said fuel tank for sensing a temperature of fuel in said fuel tank;
- a first valve disposed in said first passageway and downstream from said pressure sensor for prohibiting the supply of the gaseous mixture to said combustion chamber; and
- a processor for determining if a first sensed pressure exceeds a first threshold pressure, to thereby identify leakage in said valve;
- wherein said first sensed pressure is sensed with said first valve closed and with said sensed temperature exceeding a threshold temperature.
- 2. A subsystem according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a second passageway for directing a flow of evaporated fuel between said fuel tank and said container;
- a second valve disposed in said second passageway; and
- wherein, with said first and said second valves closed, said pressure sensor is adapted to sense a second pressure in said first passageway, and said processor is adapted to determine if a difference between said second sensed pressure and the first sensed pressure exceeds a second threshold to identify leakage of said second valve.
- 3. A subsystem according to claim 2, further comprising a timer for issuing a predetermined time count and wherein said sensor is adapted to sense said second pressure only after said second valve is closed for a period of time at least equal to said time count and said processor is adapted to perform said determination only if said sensed temperature is at least equal to a temperature corresponding to a minimum amount of fuel evaporating in said fuel tank and to less than a predetermined maximum concentration of evaporated fuel accumulated in said container.
- 4. A method for identifying leakage in a system supplying a gaseous mixture, including fuel evaporated in a fuel tank, from an accumulation container to a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, comprising the steps of:
- directing a flow of said gaseous mixture through a passageway between said container and said combustion chamber;
- sensing a temperature of fuel in said fuel tank;
- closing a first valve to prohibit the supply of the gaseous mixture to said combustion chamber;
- sensing a first pressure in said passageway upstream from said first valve; and
- determining if said first pressure is less than a threshold pressure, to thereby identify leakage in said valve;
- wherein said first pressure is sensed with said sensed temperature exceeding a threshold temperature.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, further comprising the steps of;
- closing a second valve to prohibit the supply of evaporated fuel to said container;
- sensing a second pressure between said first and said second valves and downstream of said container; and
- determining if a difference between said second sensed pressure and the first sensed pressure exceeds a second threshold to identify leakage of said second valve.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, further comprising the step of issuing a predetermined time count and wherein said determination to identify leakage of said second valve is performed only after said second valve is closed for a period of time at least equal to said time count.
- 7. A method according to claim 4, wherein said determination is performed if said sensed temperature corresponds to at least a minimum amount of fuel evaporating in said fuel tank and to less than a predetermined maximum concentration of evaporated fuel accumulated in said container.
