Claims
- 1. An airtight, watertight mechanical seam for forming an industrial fabric membrane by joining two panels of synthetic rubber reinforced by fiber to cover large areas of the earth and to prevent moisture, chemicals, or pollutants from leaking through the membrane and seam, said mechanical seam comprising:
- a. cable means which is in tension when a longitudinal force is applied thereto, said cable means being attached to and running along at least one edge of each of said two panels of fabric;
- b. a plurality of connector means for interconnecting the cable means of two adjoining panels at a plurality of points which are distributed at substantially uniform positions along the length thereof for mechanically joining said cable means of said two panels;
- c. panel flaps attached and sealed to said fabric near and running along at least one edge of each of said two panels of fabric, said flaps being attached and continuously sealed to said fabric at a longitudinal position located between said cable means and an expanse of said panel, whereby said cable is between said edge and said panel flaps; and
- d. slide closure means for joining and continuously sealing together said panel flaps across a joint formed by said cable means and said connector means thereby giving said two panels a single airtight, watertight surface.
- 2. The mechanical seam of claim 1 wherein said connector means are links.
- 3. The mechanical seam of claim 1 wherein said connector means are staples.
- 4. The mechanical seam of claim 1 wherein said connector means are shackles.
- 5. The mechanical seam of claim 1 wherein said connector means are cable ties.
- 6. An airtight, watertight mechanical seam for joining two or more panels of industrial fabric made of synthetic rubber reinforced by fabric, said seam joining said panels into a single membrane for lining a basin shaped pit in the earth and for covering said pit, said seam being tight enough to prevent moisture, chemicals, or pollutants from leaking through said membrane and into the surrounding soil, said seam comprising:
- a. cables provided on said industrial fabric and running along at least one adjoining edge of each of said panels, each of said cables having the mechanical strength required for a membrane formed by a joined plurality of said panels to be pulled across and positioned in said pit;
- b. a plurality of apertures periodically formed in said industrial fabric adjacent to and along the length of said cables;
- c. a plurality of mechanical cable connector means running through said apertures in said panels for periodically joining together said cables in adjoining edges of said panels, the cables joined by the connector means being generally parallel when the membrane is loaded by pulling forces acting within the membrane;
- d. panel flaps welded to said fabric and running along said panel edges adjacent said cables; and
- e. slide closure means for sealing said panel flaps to each other whereby said panels are formed into a single cover, said panel flaps, cables, and cable connector means being positioned and oriented relative to said panel edges to form an unbroken airtight and watertight surface for said membrane.
- 7. The mechanical seam of claim 6 wherein said cables comprise parallel cables formed in confronting edges of said panels.
- 8. A mechanical seam for joining confronting edges of at least two large area panels of industrial fabric which together form a containment protection membrane for covering large surfaces on the earth to prevent moisture, chemicals, or pollutants from leaking through the membrane to the underlying surface, said seam comprising:
- a. mechanical connector means including at least a cable embedded in and running along the entire length of each of said confronting edges for resisting longitudinal stress within said fabric along the entire length of said confronting edges, and a plurality of fastener means for mechanically joining the cable at distributed locations extending along its entire length in each of said confronting edges, whereby said plurality of fastener means keep the large area panels from pulling apart, said cables in adjoining large are panels being generally parallel to each other when the membrane is loaded by pulling forces acting within the membrane;
- b. an elongated panel flap bonded to each of said large area panels which form said membrane, said panel flaps running along the entire length of each of said confronting edges and being bonded to said large area panel at a location which is more distant than said cable form the confronting edge; and
- c. all plastic slide closure means attached to each of said panel flaps for joining and sealing together said panel flaps when closed, said large area panels, slide closure, and panel flaps forming an unbroken surface over said mechanical connector means including said fastener means joining said cables, whereby said plastic slide closure means gives said membrane a continuous and unbroken watertight sealing surface to said large-area-panel-to-large-area-panel seam.
- 9. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said fastener means are links.
- 10. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said fastener means are staples.
- 11. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said fastener means are shackles.
- 12. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said fastener means are cable ties.
- 13. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said slide closure means is an all plastic zipper.
- 14. The mechanical seam of claim 8 wherein said cables in said mechanical connector means comprises parallel cables formed in confronting edges of two of said panels which come together at said seam.
- 15. The mechanical seam of claim 1 wherein said slide closure means is an all plastic zipper.
- 16. The mechanical seam of claim 6 wherein said slide closure means is an all plastic zipper.
- 17. An airtight, watertight mechanical seam for joining two panels of industrial fabric comprising:
- a. cable means attached to and running along at least one edge of each of said two panels of fabric, said edges of said two panels confronting each other at said seam;
- b. connector means for mechanically joining said cable means of said two panels at periodic locations along said confronting edges;
- c. panel flaps attached to said fabric near and running along at least said one edge of each of said two panels of fabric, said flaps being between said cable means and an expanse of said panel; and
- d. slide closure means for joining and sealing said panel flaps across a joint formed by said cable means and said connector means.
