Claims
- 1. A method of hair removal, comprising:performing multiple treatment sessions, each treatment session comprising the steps of: generating laser light having a wavelength of 710-810 nm; and irradiating hair-bearing skin with the laser light with a series of discrete subpulses having a fractional duty cycle over an effective pulse duration of greater than 10 msec to heat a hair-producing structure in a stepwise manner; and waiting at least several weeks between each treatment session.
- 2. The method described in claim 1, further comprising irradiating the hair-bearing skin with a fluence of between 10 and 50 J/cm2.
- 3. The method described in claim 1, further comprising irradiating portions of the hair-bearing skin only once in a treatment session.
- 4. The method described in claim 1 wherein the at least several weeks between treatment sessions comprises approximately one month.
- 5. The method described in claim 1, further comprising prior to irradiating the hair-bearing skin, applying an index matching topical application to facilitate the coupling of the laser light deeply into the hair-bearing skin.
- 6. The method described in claim 1, further comprising actively modulating a driving of at least one flashlamp which excites a gain medium that generates the laser light.
- 7. The method described in claim 6, further comprising modulating the flashlamp with a corresponding series of subpulses.
- 8. The method described in claim 1, further comprising irradiating the hair-bearing skin with the laser light of a wavelength of approximately 755 nm.
- 9. The method described in claim 1, further comprising irradiating the hair-bearing skin with a fluence of approximately 20 J/cm2.
- 10. The method described in claim 1, further comprising irradiating the hair-bearing skin with the laser light with an effective pulse duration of at least 20 msec.
- 11. The method described in claim 1, further comprising dyeing the hair of the hair-bearing skin prior to irradiating it.
- 12. The method described in claim 1, further comprising prior to irradiating the hair-bearing skin, applying a topical irradiation marker to the hair-bearing skin, which is visibly responsive to the laser light.
- 13. The method described in claim 12, further comprising prior to irradiating the hair-bearing skin, applying an index matching topical application to facilitate the coupling of the laser light deeply into the hair-bearing skin.
- 14. The method described in claim 13, further comprising providing the index matching application and the irradiation marker in a common medium.
- 15. A method of hair removal, comprising:performing a treatment session comprising: generating an effective laser light output pulse having a wavelength of 710-810 nm, and comprising a series of discrete laser light subpulses having a fractional duty cycle over an effective pulse duration of greater than 10 msec; and irradiating a skin patch with the effective laser light output pulse to selectively heat hair follicles which contain hair shafts in a stepwise manner to cause the termination of hair growth in these follicles; waiting a dwell period of at least several weeks, the dwell period having sufficient duration to permit at least some hair follicles of the skin patch that initially did not contain hair shafts to produce hair shafts; and repeating the treatment session to selectively heat additional hair follicles which contain hair shafts in a stepwise manner to cause the termination of hair growth in these follicles.
- 16. The method described in claim 15, wherein the effective laser light output pulse has a fluence of between 10 and 50 J/cm2.
- 17. The method described in claim 15, further comprising waiting additional dwell periods and repeating the treatment session as necessary until all hair growth is terminated in the skin patch.
- 18. The method described in claim 15, wherein the dwell period comprises approximately one month.
- 19. The method described in claim 15, wherein the treatment session further comprises:prior to irradiation, applying a topical indicator to the skin patch which is visibly responsive to the laser light.
- 20. The method described in claim 15, wherein the treatment session further comprises:prior to irradiation, applying an index matching topical application to facilitate the coupling of the laser light deeply into the hair-bearing skin.
- 21. The method described in claim 20, wherein the index-matching topical application is combined in a common medium with a topical indicator which is visibly responsive to the laser light.
- 22. The method described in claim 15, wherein the effective laser light output pulse has a wavelength of approximately 755 nm.
- 23. The method described in claim 15, wherein the effective laser light output pulse has a fluence of approximately 20 J/cm2.
- 24. The method described in claim 15, wherein the effective laser light output pulse has an effective pulse duration of at least 20 msec.
- 25. The method described in claim 15, wherein the treatment session further comprises:prior to irradiation, dyeing the hair of the skin patch.
