Claims
- 1. An alkanoic acid derivative of the formula: ##STR181## wherein R.sup.3 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a halogen-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.15 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a hydroxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a hydroxyl group, a cyano group, a thienyl group, a naphthyl group, a dihydronaphthyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkanoyloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a benzoyloxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, or ##STR182## wherein R.sup.8 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a nitro group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group or --SO(O).sub.n R.sup.9 group, wherein R.sup.9 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, and n is an integer of from 0 to 2, m is an integer of from 0 to 2, each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.4, which may be the same or different, is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, or R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 form together with the adjacent carbon atom a 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-membered ring which may contain an oxygen atom and may be substituted by one or two C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups, each of R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 which may be the same or different is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sup.7 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group or a phenyl group, or R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 form --(CH.sub.2)l-- wherein l is an integer of 3 or 4 which may be substituted by one to two C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl groups, or R is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl group, a dihydronaphthyl group, a tetrahydronaphthyl group, a 1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthyl group, a 1,2-epoxy-C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl group or an indanyl group which may be substituted by a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group; R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkenyl group, a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkynyl group, a phenyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylideneamino group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonyl-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a halogen-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 cycloalkyl group, a nitro-substituted phenylthio-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, a halogen atom or a benzyl group which may be substituted by a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group; or R and R.sup.1 together form ethylene or methyl-substituted ethylene; A is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkythio group, a halogen atom, a halogen-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group or a di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino group; B is a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group or a halogen-substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group; X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; and Z is nitrogen; and a salt thereof.
- 2. The alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I according to claim 1, wherein R is a straight chain or branched C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkyl group, a cyclopentyl group, an .alpha.-methylbenzyl group or an .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl group; R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; each of A and B which may be the same or different is an alkyl group or an alkoxy group; and X and Z are as defined in claim 1 and a salt thereof.
- 3. The alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I according to claim 1, wherein R is a straight chain or branched C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl group or ##STR183## wherein each of R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 which may be the same or different is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; each of A and B which may be the same or different is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group; a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group or a dihalo-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy group; and X and Z are as defined in claim 1; and a salt thereof.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1, wherein each of A and B is a methoxy group.
- 5. A compound of claim 1 wherein X is oxygen.
- 6. The alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I according to claim 1, wherein each of A and B is a methoxy group, R is an isopropyl group, a tert-butyl group, a cyclopentyl group or an .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl group; R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group; and X and Z are as defined in claim 1, and a salt thereof.
- 7. The alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I according to claim 1, wherein each of A and B is a methyl group, R is a C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkyl group, and R.sup.1, X and Z are as defined in claim 1; and a salt thereof.
- 8. A herbicidal composition comprising a herbicidally effective amount of an alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I or its salt as defined in claim 1, and an agricultural adjuvant.
- 9. A method for killing weeds which comprises applying a herbicidally effective amount of an alkanoic acid derivative of the formula I or its salt as defined in claim 1 to a locus to be protected.
