Claims
- 1. A carbamate adduct obtained by contacting carbon dioxide with an alkanolamine wherein the alkanolamine is a substance containing one or two ether moieties per molecule.
- 2. The carbamate adduct of claim 1 wherein the alkanolamine corresponds to one of the following formulas: ##STR3## where independently R' is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R" is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; the integer n or n' is 1 or 2 with the proviso that the sum of n and n' is less than 3; and the integer x or x' is a whole number of from 1 to 4.
- 3. The carbamate adduct of claim 2 wherein the alkanolamine is a primary amine.
- 4. The carbamate adduct of claim 3 wherein the alkanolamine is 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol or 2-(2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol.
- 5. The carbamate adduct of claim 1 wherein the carbon dioxide is contacted with the alkanolamine in a polar medium being a liquid diol or triol.
- 6. A liquid composition which, based on their combined total weight, comprises (a) from about 5 to about 95 weight percent of a carbamate adduct, and (b) from about 95 to about 5 weight percent of a non aqueous medium, characterized in that the carbamate adduct is obtained by contacting carbon dioxide with an alkanolamine being a substance containing one or two ether moieties per molecule.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 which comprises the carbamate adduct in an amount of from about 25 to about 85 weight percent, and the polar medium in an amount of from about 75 to about 15 weight percent.
- 8. The composition of claim 6 wherein the alkanolamine corresponds to one of the following formulas: ##STR4## where independently R' is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R" is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; the integer n is 1 or 2 or n' is 0, 1 or 2 with the proviso that the sum of n and n' is less than 3; and the integer x or x' is a whole number of from 1 to 4.
- 9. The composition of claim 6 wherein the alkanolamine is 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol or 2-(2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethoxy)ethanol.
- 10. The composition of claim 6 wherein the medium is a protic substance being a liquid diol or triol.
- 11. A process for obtaining a carbamate adduct which comprises contacting, in a non-aqueous medium, carbon dioxide with an alkanolamine characterized in that:
- (a) the alkanolamine corresponds to one of the following formulas: ##STR5## where independently R' is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; R" is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl; the integer n is 1 or 2 or n' is 0, 1 or 2 with the proviso that the sum of n and n' is less than 3; and the integer x or x' is a whole number of from 1 to 4; and
- (b) the medium is a protic substance being a diol or triol,
- wherein components (a) and (b) are present in a parts by weight ratio of from about 95:5 to about 5:95.
- 12. The process of claim 11 wherein components (a) and (b) are present in a parts by weight ratio of from about 85:15 to 15:85.
- 13. The process of claim 11 wherein the carbon dioxide is introduced in an amount to convert substantially all of the alkanolamine.
- 14. The process of claim 11 wherein the carbon dioxide is introduced in its gaseous state at a controlled rate at an essentially ambient temperature.
