Claims
- 1. A composition containing a mixture comprising compounds of the formula
- RO(G).sub.x Z.sub.y
- wherein
- G is a glycosyl moiety selected from the group consisting of fructose, glucose, mannose, galactose, talose, gulose, allose, altrose, idose, arabinose, xylose, lyxose, ribose or mixtures thereof,
- R is an aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, each having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, substituted on the glycosyl moiety, the aliphatic group is straight chain or, branched, the aliphatic or cyclic group is a saturated or unsaturated group;
- x is a number from 1 to 10;
- y is a number from 1 to 2x;
- at least one of the hydroxyl groups of at least one of the glycosyl moieties is substituted with Z which is ##STR5## A is R.sub.1, H.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR, B is R.sub.2,M+ or (G).sub.x OR,
- except that when B is R.sub.2 or (G).sub.x OR, A is not H.sup.+, when A or B is (G)OR,Z substitutes one of the hydroxyl groups of the glycosyl moieties of A or B, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon groups having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, the aliphatic group is linear or, branched, the aliphatic or cyclic group is saturated or unsaturated with the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 +R.sub.2 not exceeding 50; M.sup.+ is an organic or inorganic cation.
- 2. A composition of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1, and R.sub.2 are alkyl groups which are straight chains or branched and no more than three ##STR6## groups are associated with anyone glycosol group, wherein A is R.sub.1, H.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR;
- B is R.sub.2, M.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR; R is a straight chain or branched chain, a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic group having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, a saturated or unsaturated cyclic group having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, substituted on the glycosol moiety; x is a number from 1 to 10; y is a number from 1 to 2 x; and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, are independently selected linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon groups having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, saturated or unsaturated cyclic hydrocarbon groups having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms, aromatic hydrocarbon groups having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms with the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 plus R.sub.2 not exceeding 50; M.sup.+ is an organic or inorganic cation.
- 3. A composition of claim 2 wherein G is glucose and M.sup.+ is selected from the group consisting of Na.sup.+, K.sup.+ or Li.sup.+.
- 4. A composition of claim 2 wherein the glycosyl groups have an average degree of polymerization,x, in the range of about 1.1 to about 5.
- 5. A composition of claim 2 wherein R is an alkyl group which is straight chain or branched having 8 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 6. A composition of claim 2 of the formula
- RO(G).sub.x Z.sub.y
- wherein G is a glycosyl moiety selected from the group consisting of fructose, glucose, mannose, galactose, talose, qulose, allose, altrose, idose, arabinose, xylose, lyxose or mixtures thereof;
- x is a number from 1 to 10;
- y is a number less than about 2x;
- at least one of the hydroxyl groups of at least one of the glycosyl moieties is substituted with Z which is ##STR7## wherein; A is R.sub.1, H.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR;
- B is R.sub.2, M.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR;
- except that when B is R.sub.2 or (G).sub.x OR, A is not H.sup.+, when A or B is (G).sub.x OR, Z substitutes one of the hydroxyl groups of the glycosyl moieties of A or B, and wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected alkyl groups which are straight chain or branched having from 6 to 30 carbon atoms and no more than three ##STR8## groups are associated with any one glycosyl moiety.
- 7. A composition of claim 3 wherein x is in the range of about 1.1 to about 5.
- 8. A composition of claim 7 wherein R is an alkyl group which is straight chain or branched having 8 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 9. A composition of claim 8 of the formula
- RO(G).sub.x Z.sub.y
- wherein
- G is a glucosyl moiety;
- x is 1.1 to 5;
- y is from 1 to less than 2X;
- R is an alkyl group, straight chain or branched having 8 to 18 carbon atoms, and RO is substituted on the C.sub.1 carbon of the glucosyl moiety;
- Z is ##STR9## wherein A is R.sub.1, H.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR; B is R.sub.2, M.sup.+ or (G).sub.x OR; except that when B is R.sub.2 or (G).sub.x OR, A is not H.sup.+, when A or B is (G).sub.x OR Z substitutes one of the hydroxyl groups of the glucosyl moieties of A or B, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl groups which are straight chain or branched having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and M.sup.+ is at least one member selected from the group consisting of Na.sup.+, K.sup.+ or Li.sup.+.
- 10. A composition of claim 8 wherein A is H.sup.+ and B is at least one cation selected from the group consisting of Na.sup.+, K.sup.+ and Li.sup.+.
- 11. A composition of claim 8 wherein A is R.sub.2 which is an alkyl group which is straight chain or branched having 8 to 18 carbon atoms and B is at least one cation selected from the group consisting of Na.sup.+, K.sup.+ and Li.sup.+.
- 12. A composition of claim 8 wherein A or B is (G).sub.x OR wherein G is a glucosyl moiety, R is a straight chain or branched chain alkyl group having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms attached to the glucosyl moiety through the oxygen at the C.sub.1 position and x is a number of from 1.1 to 5.
- 13. A composition of claim 10 wherein y is less than about x and x is a number from 1 to 10.
- 14. A composition of claim 11 wherein y is less than about x and x is a number from 1 to 10.
- 15. A composition of claim 12 wherein y is less than about x and x is a number from 1 to 10.
- 16. A composition of claim 1 wherein the organic or inorganic cation is at least one moiety selected the group consisting of alkali metal, ammonium, calcium and monoethanol ammonium.
