Claims
- 1. A process for alkylation of an alkylatable hydrocarbon which comprises contacting the same with an alkylating agent, employing a mole ratio of alkylatable hydrocarbon to alkylating agent between about 1:1 and about 10:1, at a temperature between about 0.degree. and about 150.degree. C, a pressure between about atmospheric and about 500 psig with a catalyst consisting essentially of graphite having intercalated in the lattice thereof between about 5 and about 50 weight percent of a Lewis acid fluoride selected from the group consisting of boron trifluoride and phoshorus pentafluoride.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said catalyst has additionally intercalated therein between about 0.5 and about 75 weight percent of a Bronsted acid selected from the group consisting of hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, fluorosulfuric acid, trifluoromethane-sulfonic acid and mixtures thereof, the molar ratio of Bronsted acid to Lewis acid fluoride being within the range of 0.1:1 to 50:1.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein the amount of intercalated Bronsted acid is between about 1 and about 50 weight percent and the molar ratio of Bronsted acid to Lewis acid fluoride is within the range of 1:1 to 5:1.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the Lewis acid fluoride is boron trifluoride.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein the Lewis acid fluoride is phosphorus pentafluoride.
- 6. The process of claim 1 wherein said alkylating agent is an olefin, alkyl halide or alcohol.
- 7. The process of claim 1 wherein the amount of said intercalated Lewis acid fluoride is between about 10 and about 40 weight percent.
- 8. The process of claim 1 wherein said alkylatable hydrocarbon is benzene.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein said alkylating agent is an olefin.
- 10. The process of claim 8 wherein said alkylating agent is an alkyl halide.
- 11. The process of claim 8 wherein said Lewis acid fluoride is boron trifluoride.
- 12. The process of claim 8 wherein said Lewis acid fluoride is phosphorus pentafluoride.
