Claims
- 1. An optical system for decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing of optical encoded data signals across multiple decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing layers, comprising:
a) a plurality of demultiplexing systems, each of said demultiplexing systems includes an input and a plurality of outputs, each of said demultiplexing systems is a system for performing a function selected from a group of functions including decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing for producing decoded signals at said outputs in response to the encoded data symbols received at said input; and b) a coupling mechanism for optically coupling said input of one demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing sytems to one of said outputs of another demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing systems to form a cascade of demultiplexing systems.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein said encoded data symbols include at least two pulses.
- 3. The system of claim 1 wherein a destination of information in said encoded data symbols encoded by at lest one time space between at least two pulses of said encoded data symbols.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein a destination of information in said encoded data symbols encoded by at lest one relative phase shift between at least two pulses of said encoded data symbols.
- 5. The system of claim 1 wherein a destination of information in said encoded data symbols encoded by at lest one relative polarization orientation between at least two pulses of said encoded data symbols.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein a destination of information in said encoded data symbols encoded by a combination including at least one time space, at least one relative phase shift, and at least one relative polarization orientation between at least two pulses of said encoded data symbols.
- 7. The system of claim 1 wherein said encoded data symbols include non-zero base line.
- 8. The system of claim 1 wherein said encoded data symbols include pulses with different time width.
- 9. The system of claim 1 wherein said encoded data symbols include at least one data pulse and at least one control pulse.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein said data pulse of one of said encodede data symbols is also said control pulse of another encoded data symbol of said encoded data symbols.
- 11. The system of claim 9 wherein said control pulse of one of said encoded data symbols is also said data pulse of another data symbol of said data symbols.
- 12. The system of claim 1 wherein said encoded data symbols include a plurality of pulses
- 13. The system of claim 1 wherein said system is produced in a medium selected from a group of media including open space, radiation guides, fiber optics, waveguides, and planar waveguides fabricated on a chip.
- 14. The system of claim 1 wherein said system includes optical sensors at said second terminals.
- 15. An optical system for decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing of optical encoded data signals across multiple decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing layers, comprising:
a) a plurality of demultiplexing systems, each of said demultiplexing system comprising:
i. an input for receiving the encoded data symbols; ii. a plurality of optical paths having first and second terminals; iii. a splitting mechanism for directing said encoded data symbols from said input to each of said first terminals; iv. a plurality of decoding devices for producing decoded signals in response to said encoded data symbols; and v. each of said optical paths includes, between said first and second terminals, at least one of said decoding devices to produce one of said decoded signals at one of said second terminals in response to one of said encoded data symbols; and b) a coupling mechanism for optically coupling said input of one demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing sytems to one of said second terminals of another demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing systems to form a cascade of demultiplexing systems.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein each of said decoding devices further includes a threshold mechanism.
- 17. The system of claim 1 wherein each of said optical paths includes plurality of said decoding devices.
- 18. An optical system for decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing of optical encoded data signals across multiple decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing layers, comprising:
a) a plurality of demultiplexing systems, each of said demultiplexing system comprising:
i. an input for receiving the encoded data symbols; ii. a plurality of radiation guides having first and second terminals; iii. a splitting mechanism for directing said encoded data symbols from said input to each of said first terminals; iv. a plurality of decoding devices, each of said decoding devices produces one of a plurality of decoded signals in response to one of said encoded data symbols; and v. each of said radiation guides includes, between said first and second terminals, at least one of said decoding devices to produce one of said plurality of decoded signals at one of said second terminals in response to one of said encoded data symbols; and b) a coupling mechanism for optically coupling said input of one demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing sytems to one of said second terminals of another demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing systems to form a cascade of demultiplexing systems.
- 19. The system of claim 1 wherein said system is produced in a medium selected from a group of media including open space, radiation guides, fiber optics, waveguides, and planar waveguides fabricated on a chip.
- 20. An optical system for decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing of optical encoded data signals across multiple decoding, switching, demultiplexing, and routing layers, comprising:
a) a plurality of demultiplexing systems, each of said demultiplexing system comprising:
i. an input for receiving the encoded data symbols; ii. a first plurality of radiation guides having first and second terminals; iii. a first splitting mechanism for directing said encoded data symbols from said input to each of said first terminals of said radiation guides of said first plurality of radiation guides; iv. a plurality of decoding devices each of said decoding devices includes a second plurality of radiation guides, each of said radiation guides of said second plurality of radiation guides associated with one of the ports of a second splitting mechanism and with one of the ports of a combining mechanism, said decoding devices arranged for producing decoded signals in response to said encoded data symbols; and v. each of said optical paths includes, between said first and second terminals, at least one of said decoding devices to produce one of said decoded signals at one of said second terminals in response to one of said encoded data symbols; and b) a coupling mechanism for optically coupling said input of one demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing sytems to one of said second terminals of another demultiplexing system of said plurality of demultiplexing systems to form a cascade of demultiplexing systems.
