Claims
- 1. A process for producing methane and other gaseous hydrocarbons by contacting a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide and gaseous compounds of sulfur in concentrations of up to 30,000 ppm with a three-component catalyst comprising (1) a mixture of oxygen and sulfur compounds of an element selected from the group consisting of the lanthanide elements, (2) a mixture of oxygen and sulfur compounds of molybdenum, and (3) an oxygen compound of aluminum or silicon, the atomic ratio of the lanthanide element to molybdenum being about 9 to 1, and the oxides of aluminum or silicon being present in an amount of about between 1% and about 10% by weight based on the weight of the catalyst.
- 2. A process for producing a methane containing gas from a gaseous mixture containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the ratio of H.sub.2 /CO of about 5/1 to 1/1, other gaseous components and gaseous compounds of sulfur in concentrations of up to 30,000 ppm by contacting said gaseous mixture at a temperature of from about 500.degree. C. to about 600.degree. C.; at a pressure of from 100 psig to 2,000 psig and at a space velocity of from 80 to 10,000 v/v/hr (STP) with a three-component catalyst comprising (1) a mixture of oxygen and sulfur compounds of an element selected from the group consisting of the lanthanide elements, (2) a mixture of oxygen and sulfur compounds of molybdenum, and (3) an oxygen compound of aluminum or silicon, the atomic ratio of the lanthanide element to molybdenum being about 9 to 1, and the oxides of aluminum or silicon being present in an amount of about between 1% and about 10% by weight based on the weight of the catalyst.
- 3. A process for producing methane and other gaseous hydrocarbons according to claim 1 in which the catalyst comprises an oxide and sulfide of molybdenum, an oxide and sulfide of cerium, and an oxide of aluminum.
- 4. A process according to claim 3 in which the catalyst contains cerium oxides and sulfides, molybdenum oxides and sulfides, and aluminum oxide, the atomic ratio of Ce/Mo/Al being about 9/1/1.
- 5. A process for producing a methane containing gas according to claim 2 in which the caatalyst comprises oxygen and sulfur compounds of cerium oxygen and sulfur compounds of molybdenum; and oxygen compounds of aluminum or silicon.
