Claims
- 1. A core suitable for use in investment casting comprising
- a shaped body of ceramic material including a central portion and an integral outer portion enclosing the central portion therein,
- the ceramic material of the central portion is characterized by a porous microstructure, wherein the porosity content is greater than 20 percent by volume, and is characteristic of grains which have undergone vapor phase transport action, and
- the ceramic material of the integral outer portion is characterized by a dense layer of the same ceramic material as that of the central portion.
- 2. The ceramic article of claim 1 wherein
- the ceramic article comprises alumina.
- 3. The ceramic article of claim 1 wherein
- the porosity content of the central portion is greater than 50 percent by volume, and is continuous throughout the body,
- the porosity in the integral outer portion is characterized by a dense layer of ceramic material wherein the porosity is discontinuous, and further including
- a network of narrow connecting bridges of ceramic material interconnecting adjacent particles in the central portion.
- 4. The ceramic article of claim 3 wherein
- the ceramic material of the body comprises alumina.
- 5. The ceramic article of claim 4 wherein
- the alumina is doped with from 5 mole percent to 15 mole percent magnesia.
- 6. The ceramic article of claim 2 wherein
- the alumina is doped with from 5 mole percent to 15 mole percent magnesia.
