Claims
- 1. A complex composite article comprising:
- (a) at least one filler material embedded by a matrix comprising an aluminum matrix metal, said at least one filler material containing at least some aluminum nitride on a surface thereof at least said matrix metal being three dimensionally interconnected about said filler material, thereby forming a predominantly metal matrix composite body; and
- (b) a body of metal contacting at least a portion of said metal matrix composite body, said body of metal being integrally bonded to said metal matrix composite body to form a complex composite article.
- 2. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of oxides, carbides, borides, and nitrides.
- 3. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of alumina, magnesia, titania, zirconia, hafnia, silicon carbide, titanium carbide, titanium diboride, aluminum dodecaboride, aluminum nitride, silicon nitride and zirconium nitride.
- 4. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of particles, platelets, whiskers, spheres, tubules, pellets, refractory fiber cloth, and fibers.
- 5. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said body of metal has a composition which is different from said matrix metal.
- 6. The complex composite article of claim 5, wherein said body of metal has a greater corrosion resistance than said matrix metal.
- 7. The complex composite article of claim 5, wherein said body of metal has a higher melting point than said matrix metal.
- 8. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said metal matrix composite body comprises a surface on said body of metal.
- 9. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said body of metal comprises a surface on said metal matrix composite body.
- 10. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said metal matrix composite body sandwiches said body of metal.
- 11. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of a surface of said metal matrix composite body comprises an aluminum nitride skin.
- 12. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said matrix metal comprises aluminum and at least one alloying constituent comprising at least one material selected from the group consisting of magnesium, silicon, iron, copper, manganese, chromium and zinc.
- 13. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said body of metal and said matrix metal have substantially the same composition.
- 14. The complex composite article of claim 1, wherein said at least some aluminum nitride has been formed in situ during formation of said complex composite article.
- 15. A complex composite article comprising:
- (a) at least one filler material comprising at least one material selected from the group consisting of particles, platelets, whiskers, spheres, tubules, pellets, refractory fiber cloth, and fibers, said filler material being embedded by a matrix comprising an aluminum matrix metal , said at least one filler material containing at least some aluminum nitride on a surface thereof, at least said matrix metal being three dimensionally interconnected about said filler material, thereby forming a predominantly metal matrix composite body; and
- (b) a body of metal contacting at least a portion of said metal matrix composite body, said body of metal being integrally bonded to said metal matrix composite body to form a complex composite article.
- 16. The complex composite article of claim 15, wherein said matrix metal comprises an aluminum-magnesium alloy.
- 17. The complex composite article of claim 15, wherein said matrix metal comprises aluminum and at least one alloying constituent comprising at least one material selected from the group consisting of magnesium, silicon, iron, copper, manganese, chromium and zinc.
- 18. The complex composite article of claim 15, wherein said at least some aluminum nitride has been formed in situ during formation of said complex composite article.
- 19. A complex composite article comprising:
- (a) at least one filler material embedded by a matrix comprising matrix metal and at least some aluminum nitride formed in situ, said matrix metal comprising aluminum, at least said matrix metal being three-dimensionally interconnected about said filler material, thereby forming a predominantly metal matrix composite body;
- (b) a body of metal contacting at least a portion of said metal matrix composite body, said body of metal being integrally bonded to said metal matrix composite body to form a complex composite article; and
- (c) wherein at least a portion of a surface of said metal matrix composite body comprises an aluminum nitride skin.
- 20. The complex composite article of claim 19, wherein said at least one filler material comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of particles, platelets, whiskers, spheres, tubules pellets, refractory fiber cloth, and fibers.
