Claims
- 1. An aluminum wettable, cured, carbonized cathode material for use in a cell for the electrolytic reduction of alumina to aluminum comprising a Refractory Hard Material in a carbonaceous matrix comprising carbonaceous filler having a particle size less than 100 mesh and carbonaceous additive selected from the group consisting of carbon having a particle size greater than 100 mesh and carbon fiber and mixtures thereof bonded by a non-graphitized amorphous carbon, said matrix having a rate of ablation essentially equal to the rate of wear and dissolution of said Refractory Hard Material in the operating environment of said cell.
- 2. The material of claim 1 wherein said non-graphitized amorphous carbon is derived from thermosetting resin.
- 3. The material of claim 2 wherein said Refractory Hard Material is selected from the group consisting of titanium diboride, titanium carbide, zirconium diboride, zirconium carbide and alloys thereof.
- 4. The material of the claim 3 wherein said Refractory Hard Material is titanium diboride.
- 5. The material of claim 4 wherein said carbon of said carbonaceous additive has a particle size of greater than 100 mesh and less than 4 mesh.
- 6. The material of claim 4 wherein said TiB.sub.2 is in the form selected from the group consisting of single crystals of TiB.sub.2, bicrystals of TiB.sub.2, open clusters of crystal of TiB.sub.2, and crushed and ground crystals of TiB.sub.2 and mixtures thereof.
- 7. The material of claim 6 wherein said TiB.sub.2 is in particle form.
- 8. The material of claim 7 wherein said particles have a size ranging from submicron up to about 10 mesh.
- 9. The material of claim 8 wherein said particles range up to about 100 mesh.
- 10. The material of claim 9 wherein said particles range up to about 325 mesh.
- 11. The material of claim 2, 7, or 10 wherein said Refractory Hard Material comprises from about 20 percent to about 70 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 12. The material of claim 11 wherein said thermosetting resin comprises from about 1 to about 40 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 13. The material of claim 12 wherein said carbonaceous matrix comprises from about 30 percent to about 80 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 14. The material of claim 13 wherein said thermosetting resin is selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, furane resins and mixtures thereof.
- 15. The material of claim 2, 7, or 10 wherein said Refractory Hard Material comprises from about 35 percent to about 60 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 16. The material of claim 15 wherein said thermosetting resinl comprises from about 1 to about 40 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 17. The material of claim 16 wherein said carbonaceous matrix comprises from about 40 percent to about 65 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 18. The material of claim 14 wherein said thermosetting resin is selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, furane resins and mixtures thereof.
- 19. The material of claim 18 wherein said carbonaceous filler comprises about 10 percent to about 40 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 20. The material of claim 19 wherein said carbonaceous additive comprises about 5 percent to about 15 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 21. The material of claim 3 wherein said Refractory Hard Material is in particle form.
- 22. The material of claim 21 wherein said particles have a size ranging from submicron up to about 10 mesh.
- 23. The material of claim 2 wherein said thermosetting resin comprises from about 1 to about 40 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 24. The material of claim 2 wherein said thermosetting resin is selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, furane resins and mixtures thereof.
- 25. The material of claim 2 wherein said thermosetting resin is selected from the group consisting of phenolic resins, furane resins, polyphenylene resins, heterocyclic resins, epoxy resins, silicone resins, alkyd resins, polyimide resins and mixtures thereof.
- 26. The material of claim 25 wherein said Refractory Hard Material comprises from about 10 percent to about 90 percent of said material prior to curing and carbonizing.
- 27. The material of claim 1 wherein said carbon of said carbonaceous additive has a particle size of greater than 100 mesh and less than 4 mesh.
