Claims
- 1. A molding grade amber composition comprising a thermoplastic polyester having copolymerized therein or reacted therewith residues of at least two compounds of formula I, at least one compound of formula II, and at least one compound of formula III:
- 2. The composition of claim 1 containing the copolymerized residues of compounds of Formula I, II and III at such levels that a film having a thickness of from about 76 to 432 microns (about 3 mil to 17 mil) will transmit no more than an average of about 1% of ultraviolet and visible light over the wavelength range from about 300 nm to about 450 nm, no more visible light than an average of about 3% of the visible light over the wavelength range of about 450 nm to about 500 nm and no more visible light than about 10% over the range of from about 500 nm to about 550 nm.
- 3. The composition of claim I wherein compounds of Formula I correspond to the structures wherein: (1) R1 and R2 are methyl or ethyl, (R)n is hydrogen and P and Q are C2-C6-alkoxycarbonyl and (2) R1 and R2 are selected from methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-cyanoethyl, —CH2C6H5, —CH2C6H4-4—CO2C1-C6 alkyl and 2—C2-C6 alkanoyloxyethyl, P is cyano, and Q is C2-C6-alkoxycarbonyl; the compounds of Formula II which correspond to the structures wherein Y is hydrogen, methyl or 2-hydroxyethyl and (R3)m is hydrogen or one or two groups selected from methyl, methoxy and chlorine; the compounds of Formula III correspond to the structures wherein (R4)n is hydrogen and R5 is hydrogen or C1-C6 alkyl.
- 4. The polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the polyester comprises at least 50 mole percent of the residues of terephthalic acid and 50 mole percent of the residues of ethylene glycol.
- 5. The polymeric composition of claim 1 wherein the polyester comprises at least 50 mole percent of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid residues and at least 50 mole percent of the residues of ethylene glycol.
- 6. The polymeric composition of claim 2 wherein the polyester is comprised of:
(1) diacid residues comprised of at least about 85 mole percent terephthalic acid residues; and (2) diol residues comprising at least about 85 mole percent ethylene glycol residues.
- 7. The polymeric composition of claim 2 wherein the polyester is comprised of:
(1) diacid residues comprised of at least about 85 mole percent 2,6-naphthalene-dicarboxylic acid residues; and (2) diol residues comprising at least about 85 mole percent ethylene glycol residues.
- 8. A thermopastic, amber, molding composition comprising a polyester having an inherent viscosity of about 0.6 to 0.9 dL/g comprising:
(1) diacid residues comprised of at least about 85 mole percent terephthalic acid residues, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid residues, or a mixture of terephthalic acid and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid residues; and (2) diol residues comprising at least about 50 mole percent, preferably at least 85 mole percent, ethylene glycol residues; having copolymerized therein or reacted therewith: (1) about 115to 4500 ppm of residues of a compound of formula I: 10wherein R1 and R2 are methyl or ethyl; and P and Q are selected from C2-C6-alkoxylcarbonyl, C1-C6-alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, carbamyl, N—C1-C6-alkyl-carbamyl, N-arylcarbamyl and heteroaryl; (2) about 190 to 7500 ppm of residues of a compound of formula I: 11wherein R is hydrogen or methyl; R1 and R2 are selected from methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-chloroethyl, 2-cyanoethyl, —CH2C6H5, —CH2C6H4-4—CO2 C1-C6-alkyl and 2—C2-C6-alkanoyloxyethyl; P is cyano; and Q is selected from C2-C6-alkoxylcarbonyl, C1-C6-alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, carbamyl, N—C1-C6-alkylcarbamyl, N-arylcarbamyl and heteroaryl; (3) about 565 to 22,500 ppm of residues of a compound of formula II: 12wherein Y is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or 2-hydroxyethyl; R3 is selected from hydrogen, methyl, methoxy and chlorine; and m is 1 or 2; (4) about 300 to 12,000 ppm of residues of a compound of formula III: 13wherein R5 is hydrogen or C1-C6-alkyl; and (5) and having admixed therein about 50-1800 ppm of copper phthalocyanine blue colorant.
