Claims
- 1. A medical system, comprising:
a) an ambulatory medical device (MD) comprising MD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one MD telemetry system and at least one MD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the MD telemetry system and operation of the medical device, wherein the medical device is configured to provide a treatment to a body of a patient or to monitor a selected state of the body; and b) a communication device (CD) comprising CD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one CD telemetry system and at least one CD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the CD telemetry system and operation of the communication device, wherein the CD telemetry system sends messages to or receives messages from the MD telemetry system, wherein the CD telemetry system listens during preselected outbound listening periods windows of time for at least a selected type of message from the MD telemetry system.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein a first portion of the MD telemetry system is incorporated into the MD processor and a second portion of the MD telemetry system is external to the MD processor, or wherein a first portion of the CD telemetry system is incorporated into the CD processor and a second portion of the CD telemetry system is external to the CD processor.
- 3. The system of claim 2 wherein (1) the MD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external MD functional module, other than the second portion of the MD telemetry system, that is external to the MD processor, (2) the CD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external CD functional module, other than the second portion of the CD telemetry system, that is external to the CD processor, (3) the MD processor comprises an internal MD CPU and at least one other internal MD functional module, or (4) the CD processor comprises an internal CD CPU and at least one other internal CD functional module.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the selected type comprises unsolicited messages.
- 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the selected type comprises solicited messages.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the medical device is capable of initiating communication with the communication device during outbound listening periods at selected time intervals, wherein the communication device additionally comprises:
a) a CD clock system; b) a CD monitoring system that monitors a CD time, based on the CD clock system, that corresponds to a selected portion of a message received by the CD telemetry system from the MD telemetry system; and c) a CD control system for effectively comparing the CD time to an anticipated outbound transmission start time by the MD telemetry system for that selected portion of the message to adaptively adjust a subsequent outbound listening period based, at least in part, on the comparison of the CD time to the anticipated outbound transmission start time.
- 7. The system of claim 6 wherein the adjustment of the subsequent outbound listening period lengthens the period.
- 8. The system of claim 6 wherein the adjustment of the subsequent outbound listening period shifts an outbound listening start time of the subsequent outbound listening period.
- 9. The system of claim 1 wherein the outbound listening periods are activated no more than once every ten seconds.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the outbound listening periods are activated no more than once every 30 seconds.
- 11. The system of claim 10 wherein the outbound listening periods, during normal operation, are activated at least once every 10 minutes.
- 12. The system of claim 11 wherein outbound listening periods, during normal operation, are activated at least once every 2 minutes.
- 13. The system of claim 1 wherein the MD telemetry system activates a window for receiving messages from the CD telemetry system during prescribed inbound listening periods and wherein successive prescribed inbound listening periods are separated by a smaller interval than an interval that separates successive outbound listening periods.
- 14. The system of claim 1 wherein the medical device comprises at least one of (1) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing a selected drug, (2) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing insulin, (3) an implantable sensor for sensing a selected state of the body, (4) an implantable sensor for sensing glucose level, or (5) an implantable electrode for selectively stimulating a portion of the body of the patient.
- 15. A medical system, comprising:
a) an ambulatory medical device (MD) comprising MD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one MD telemetry system and at least one MD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the MD telemetry system and operation of the medical device, wherein the medical device is configured to provide a treatment to a body of a patient or to monitor a selected state of the body; and b) a communication device (CD) comprising CD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one CD telemetry system and at least one CD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the CD telemetry system and operation of the communication device, wherein the CD telemetry system sends messages to or receives messages from the MD telemetry system, wherein the CD telemetry system does not send out a message as the message is generated but instead delays the sending out of a message until a next prescribed inbound transmission start time occurs.
- 16. The system of claim 15 wherein a first portion of the MD telemetry system is incorporated into the MD processor and a second portion of the MD telemetry system is external to the MD processor, or wherein a first portion of the CD telemetry system is incorporated into the CD processor and a second portion of the CD telemetry system is external to the CD processor.
- 17. The system of claim 16 wherein (1) the MD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external MD functional module, other than the second portion of the MD telemetry system, that is external to the MD processor, (2) the CD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external CD functional module, other than the second portion of the CD telemetry system, that is external to the CD processor, (3) the MD processor comprises an internal MD CPU and at least one other internal MD functional module, or (4) the CD processor comprises an internal CD CPU and at least one other internal CD functional module.
- 18. The system of claim 15 wherein potential prescribed inbound transmission start times occur at regularly spaced intervals times.
- 19. The system of claim 15 wherein messages include a preamble and the sending attempts to send out of messages at the prescribed inbound transmission start times occur using preambles that occupy prescribed inbound transmission periods.
- 20. The system of claim 19 wherein the MD telemetry system only listens for communications coming from the CD telemetry system during prescribed inbound listening periods.
- 21. The system of claim 20 wherein a prescribed inbound listening period is increased after one or more failed attempts to communicate with the MD telemetry system.
- 22. The system of claim 21 wherein the increased prescribed inbound listening period is set to a time at least as large as an anticipated maximum time between successive inbound listening periods during which the MD telemetry system is believed to be listening.
- 23. The system of claim 20 wherein a size of the prescribed inbound listening period is selected based, at least in part, on the lapsed time between the a last successful communication and the a present time.
- 24. The system of claim 15 wherein the prescribed inbound listening periods are at least a portion of the time set to an amount of time that is less than an interval between the successive potential prescribed inbound transmission start times.
- 25. The system of claim 15 wherein the medical device comprises at least one of (1) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing a selected drug, (2) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing insulin, (3) an implantable sensor for sensing a selected state of the body, (4) an implantable sensor for sensing glucose level, or (5) an implantable electrode for selectively stimulating a portion of the body of the patient.
- 26. A medical system, comprising:
a) an ambulatory medical device (MD) comprising MD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one MD telemetry system and at least one MD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the MD telemetry system and operation of the medical device, wherein the medical device is configured to provide a treatment to a body of a patient or to monitor a selected state of the body; and b) a communication device (CD) comprising CD electronic control circuitry that further comprises at least one CD telemetry system and at least one CD processor that controls, at least in part, operation of the CD telemetry system and operation of the communication device, wherein the CD telemetry system sends messages to or receives messages from the MD telemetry system, wherein the MD telemetry system listens for any messages coming from the CD telemetry system beginning only at prescribed inbound listening start times for prescribed inbound listening periods.
- 27. The system of claim 26 wherein a first portion of the MD telemetry system is incorporated into the MD processor and a second portion of the MD telemetry system is external to the MD processor, or wherein a first portion of the CD telemetry system is incorporated into the CD processor and a second portion of the CD telemetry system is external to the CD processor.
- 28. The system of claim 27 wherein (1) the MD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external MD functional module, other than the second portion of the MD telemetry system, that is external to the MD processor, (2) the CD electronic control circuitry comprises at least one external CD functional module, other than the second portion of the CD telemetry system, that is external to the CD processor, (3) the MD processor comprises an internal MD CPU and at least one other internal MD functional module, or (4) the CD processor comprises an internal CD CPU and at least one other internal CD functional module.
- 29. The system of claim 26 wherein the communication device anticipates the prescribed inbound listening periods during which the medical device is listening for incoming messages and sets inbound transmission start times of messages to correspond to the anticipated prescribed inbound listening periods of the medical device during the selected intervals.
- 30. The system of claim 26 wherein the MD telemetry system listens no more than five times per second.
- 31. The system of claim 30 wherein the MD telemetry system listens no more than once per second.
- 32. The system of claim 31 wherein the MD telemetry system listens no less than once per 30 seconds.
- 33. The system of claim 32 wherein the MD telemetry system listens no less than once per five seconds.
- 34. The system of claim 25 wherein the prescribed inbound listening period is no more than 100 milliseconds.
- 35. The system of claim 34 wherein the prescribed inbound listening period is no more than 25 milliseconds.
- 36. The system of claim 35 wherein the prescribed inbound listening period is no more than 6 milliseconds.
- 37. The system of claim 26 wherein the prescribed inbound listening period is less than 10% of an interval between successive inbound listening start times.
- 38. The system of claim 34 wherein the listening time is less than 1% of an interval between successive inbound listening start times.
- 39. The system of claim 35 wherein the listening time is less than 0.5% of the interval between successive inbound listening start times.
- 40. The system of claim 26 wherein intervals between successive inbound listening start times are different for at least two operational states of the medical device.
- 41. The system of claim 40 wherein the successive inbound listening start times occur less than once every five seconds when the medical device is in a non-medically functional mode and occur no less than once every five seconds when the medical device is in a medically functional mode.
- 42. The system of claim 26 wherein the medical device comprises at least one of (1) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing a selected drug, (2) an implantable infusion pump for selectively dispensing insulin, (3) an implantable sensor for sensing a selected state of the body, (4) an implantable sensor for sensing glucose level, or (5) an implantable electrode for selectively stimulating a portion of the body of the patient.
- 43. The system of claim 25 wherein the prescribed inbound listening start times and prescribed inbound listening periods and preselected intervals are determined and activated automatically without microprocessor intervention.
