Claims
- 1. A process for inhibiting the deposition of scale and sludge on heat transfer surfaces of cooling water systems and boilers which comprises adding to said systems an aminoalkylenephosphonic acid or an alkali metal salt in an amount sufficient to inhibit the deposition of scale and sludge on said surfaces thereof having the formula: ##STR9## wherein R is hydrogen or ##STR10## R.sub.1 is hydrogen or ##STR11## R.sub.2 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, 2-hydroxyethyl, 2-hydroxypropyl, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl, ##STR12## R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 may be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; n is 1 or 2; M is hydrogen or an alkali metal; with the proviso that when R is ##STR13## and with the further proviso that R.sub.1 is hydrogen only when R.sub.2 is ##STR14##
