Claims
- 1. A compound having the formula; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; wherein;R1, R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl and lower alkynyl; R3, R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, OR6 where R6 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, aryl, COR7, or SO2R8 where R7 and R8 are independently selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl and aryl; X is selected from the group consisting of lower alkylene, lower alkenylene, and lower alkynylene, all of which may be optionally substituted with lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano, amino; —(CH)pQ(CH2)r— where p is 1 to 3, r is 1 to 3 and Q is oxygen, C═O, S(O)t where t is 0 to 2, or NR12 where R12 is hydrogen or lower alkyl which may be optionally substituted with lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano, amnino; or —(CH2)sA(CH2)v— where s is O to 2, v is 0 to 2 and A is a 3 to 6 membered carbocyclic radical which may be optionally substituted with lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano, amino wherein all said radicals are optionally substituted with hydrogen, halogen and lower alkyl; Y is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, and lower alkynyl or Y may be NR9R10 wherein R9 and R10 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, nitro, amino, aryl, and lower alkaryl; and B is NR5R11 wherein R5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl and aryl, and R11 is selected from a 3 to 8 member heterocyclyl radical in which at least one member of the ring is carbon and in which 1 to about 4 members are heteroatoms independently selected from oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur and said heterocyclyl radical may be optionally substituted with hydroxyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl, halogen, nitro, carboxyl, SO2R13 where R13 is selected from lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NR1R2, amino, acyloxy, trifluoromethyl, phenyl and naphthyl which may be optionally substituted with halogen, nitro, lower alkoxy, and lower alkyl.
- 2. The compound as recited in claim 1 whereinR1, R2 are hydrogen; R3, R4 are hydrogen; X is selected from the group consisting of lower alkylene, lower alkenylene, and lower alkynylene; Y is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl or Y may be NR9,R10 wherein R9,R10 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, lower alkenyl, lower alkynyl, nitro, amino, and lower alkylaryl; and B is NR5R11 wherein R5 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen or lower alkyl, R11 is selected from a 5 to 6 member heterocyclyl radical in which 1 to 4 heteroatoms are nitrogen or sulfur.
- 3. A method of inhibiting nitric oxide synthesis in a subject in need of such inhibition by administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claims 1 or 2.
- 4. A method of selectively inhibiting nitric oxide synthesis produced by inducible NO synthase over nitric oxide produced by the constitutive forms of NO synthase in a subject in need of such selective inhibition by administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claims 1 or 5.
- 5. A method of lowering nitric oxide levels in a subject in need of such by administering a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claims 1 or 2.
- 6. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of claims 1 or 2 together with one or more pharmaceutically acceptable carriers.

No. 09/166,036 filed Oct. 5, 1998, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,919,787 which is a continuation of application Ser. No. 08/817,971 filed Apr. 30, 1997, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,854,251 which is a continuation of PCT/US95/14001 filed Nov. 8, 1995, which is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 08/336,596 filed Nov. 9, 1994, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,684,008.
