Claims
- 1. Composing apparatus for selecting segments from image source material stored in at lease one storage medium and for denoting serially connected sequences of said segments, said apparatus comprising:
- a pictorial display means;
- an operator control means;
- at least one first random access storage medium for storing a plurality of duplicate counterparts of image source material; and
- a composing control means responsive to said operator control means for controlling said storage media, said random access storage medium, and said pictorial display means, said composing control means comprising:
- means for denoting a start and an end of each of a plurality of segments of said source material;
- means for identifying each said segment by at least one pictorial image segment label;
- means for selectively displaying segments of said image source material on said pictorial display means;
- means for assembling at least a plurality of said labels into a serially connected label sequence;
- operator responsive means for locating any said segment by displaying said pictorial labels in said label sequence; and
- said displaying means being further adapted for displaying the segment identified by a selected label.
- 2. Composing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said random access storage medium is selected from the group consisting of a Winchester hard disk, an analog video disk, a laser read/write disk, a large computer RAM, a bubble memory, and a crystal memory.
- 3. Composing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- said random access storage medium comprises at least one of a Winchester hard disk and a laser read/write disk; and
- said apparatus further includes means for digitizing and compressing said image source material for storage in said random access storage medium, and for decompressing said image source material upon retrieval from said random access storage medium.
- 4. Composing apparatus according to claim 1, further including:
- at least one serial storage medium; and
- said composing control means further comprises means for selectively controlling image information retrieval from said random access storage medium and said serial storage medium for display on said pictorial display means.
- 5. Composing apparatus according to claim 1, further including:
- means for associating any image source segment with stored text material; and
- switch means for selectively switching between displaying said stored text material and displaying the pictorial label associated with the image source segment.
- 6. Composing apparatus according to claim 1, wherein:
- each said segment of image source material includes a plurality image source frames;
- said apparatus includes a second random access memory storage medium for storing said image segment labels; and
- said apparatus further includes means for automatically digitizing and storing a pictorial image label in said second random access memory storage for each image source frame as said image source frame is being input into said first random access storage medium, for allowing the selection of beginning and ending image segment labels for each of said segment.
- 7. A composing apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein:
- each of said segment of image source material includes a pluality of image source frames;
- said apparatus further includes means for generating a pictorial image label for each said frames of said image source material; and
- means for selecting at least one of said pictorial image labels of said frames as an image segment label of a corresponding segment;
- said selecting means allows for the selection of image segment labels for any of said segments.
- 8. A composing apparatus as recited in claim 7, wherein:
- said generating means generates said pictorial image labels for each of said frames substantially automatically.
