Claims
- 1. An analytical process for determining biodegradability of compounds having a moiety of the Formula: ##STR5## wherein each R is independently hydrogen or an unsubstituted alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl group or an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or aralkyl group substituted with a hydroxyl, carboxyl, sulfonyl, phosphoryl, imide, or amino group and wherein the distance between the carboxyl carbon atoms is designated "Distance A", the distance between carboxyl double bonded oxygen atoms is designated "Distance B", and the distance between carboxyl hydroxy oxygen atoms is designated "Distance C", comprising: determining in at least one energetically feasible conformation of a compound having a moiety corresponding to the Formula, that the compound is biodegradable when all of the following conditions are met:
- (a) Distance A is within a range of from about 3.81.times.10.sup.-10 m to about 3.86.times.10.sup.-10 m;
- (b) Distance B is within a range of from about 5.13.times.10.sup.-10 to about 5.52.times.10.sup.-10 m;
- (c) Distance C is within a range of from about 5.28.times.10.sup.-10 m to about 6.09.times.10.sup.-10 m; and
- (d) the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is on at least one carboxyl carbon atom of the moiety.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein each R is independently methyl or hydrogen.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein energetically feasible conformations are input into a programmed digital computer having a means for determining Distance A, Distance B and Distance C and comparing them with the ranges specified in steps (a), (b), and (c). Abstract Please substitute the following for the current abstract: Chelants represented by Formula 1b: ##STR6## are determined to be biodegradable when the distance between the carboxyl carbon atoms (Distance A) is from about 3.8.times.10.sup.-10 to about 4.6.times.10.sup.-10 m, the distance between carboxyl double bonded oxygen atoms (Distance B) is from about 5.1.times.10.sup.-10 to about 5.9.times.10.sup.-10 m, the distance between carboxyl hydroxyl groups (Distance C) is from about 4.3 to about 6.7.times.10.sup.-10 m), and the LUMO is located on one of the carbonyl carbons of the portion of the molecule not including R or R.sup.1.
