Claims
- 1. A vaso-occlusive device, comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor coil and a link fixedly coupled between the anchor coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the link is directly attached between the anchor coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 3. The device of claim 1, wherein the primary coil is helically wound.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the link is laser cut.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein the link is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyesters, and polyolefins.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 7. The device of claim 1, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the link.
- 8. The device of claim 7, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 9. The device of claim 1, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 10. The device of claim 1, further comprising a filler material disposed within the coil lumen adjacent the anchor coil.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein the filler material is selected from the group consisting of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), polyamide, silicon, and polyurethane.
- 12. The device of claim 1, further comprising a deployment mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein the deployment mechanism comprises an electrolytically severable junction adapted to detach from a core wire by imposition of an electric current on the core wire.
- 14. The device of claim 1, wherein the primary coil is sized to fit within an aneurysm.
- 15. A catheter assembly for occluding a body cavity, comprising:
a delivery device having a distal end; and a vaso-occlusive device associated with the distal end of the delivery device, the vaso-occlusive device comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor coil and a link fixedly coupled between the anchor coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 16. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein the link is directly attached between the anchor coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 17. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 18. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the link.
- 19. The catheter assembly of claim 18, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 20. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 21. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably connected via an electrolytic joint.
- 22. The catheter assembly of claim 15, wherein the body cavity comprises an aneurysm.
- 23. The catheter assembly of claim 15, further comprising a catheter, wherein the delivery device is a core wire slidably disposed within the catheter, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably coupled to the core wire.
- 24. A vaso-occlusive device, comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor chain having at least a proximal twisted link fixedly coupled to the primary coil and a distal link fixedly coupled to the stretch-resisting member.
- 25. The device of claim 24, wherein the distal link is twisted.
- 26. The device of claim 24, wherein the distal link is untwisted.
- 27. The device of claim 24, wherein the distal link is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 28. The device of claim 24, wherein the outer primary coil is helically wound.
- 29. The device of claim 25, wherein each of the twisted links comprises at least one closed loop and one twist.
- 30. The device of claim 24, wherein the anchor chain only includes the proximal and distal links.
- 31. The device of claim 26, wherein the distal link is laser cut.
- 32. The device of claim 22, wherein the link is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyesters, and polyolefins.
- 33. The device of claim 24, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 34. The device of claim 24, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal link.
- 35. The device of claim 34, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 36. The device of claim 24, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 37. The device of claim 24, further comprising a filler material disposed within the coil lumen adjacent the proximal link.
- 38. The device of claim 37, wherein the filler is selected from the group consisting of polyethyleneterephthalate (PET), polyamide, silicon, and polyurethane.
- 39. The device of claim 24, further comprising a deployment mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 40. The device of claim 39, wherein the deployment mechanism comprises an electrolytically severable junction adapted to detach from a core wire by imposition of an electric current on the core wire.
- 41. The device of claim 24, wherein the primary coil is sized to fit within an aneurysm.
- 42. A catheter assembly for occluding a body cavity, comprising:
a delivery device having a distal end; and a vaso-occlusive device associated with the distal end of the delivery device, the vaso-occlusive device comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor chain having at least a proximal twisted link fixedly coupled to the primary coil and a distal link fixedly coupled to the stretch-resisting member.
- 43. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the distal link is twisted.
- 44. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the distal link is untwisted.
- 45. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the distal link is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 46. The catheter assembly of claim 43, wherein each of the twisted links comprises at least one closed loop and one twist.
- 47. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the anchor chain only includes the proximal and distal links.
- 48. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 49. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal link.
- 50. The catheter assembly of claim 49, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 51. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 52. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the vaso-occlusive coil is detachably connected via an electrolytic joint.
- 53. The catheter assembly of claim 42, wherein the body cavity comprises an aneurysm.
- 54. The catheter assembly of claim 42, further comprising a catheter, wherein the delivery device is a core wire slidably disposed within the catheter, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably coupled to the core wire.
- 55. A vaso-occlusive device, comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising one or more flexible joints and being fixedly coupled to the outer primary coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 56. The device of claim 55, wherein the anchor assembly further comprises a plurality of rigid members, and the one or more flexible joints are located between the plurality of rigid members.
- 57. The device of claim 56, wherein the plurality of members comprises first and second rigid members, one of the one or more flexible joints is located between the first and second rigid members, the first rigid member is fixedly coupled to the outer primary coil, and the second rigid member is fixedly coupled to the stretch-resisting member.
- 58. The device of claim 55, wherein the first rigid member comprises an anchor coil and the second rigid member comprises a link.
- 59. The device of claim 58, wherein the link is laser cut.
- 60. The device of claim 58, wherein the link is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyesters, and polyolefins.
- 61. The device of claim 56, wherein the first and second rigid members each comprises a twisted link.
- 62. The device of claim 61, wherein the twisted link comprises at least one closed loop and one twist.
- 63. The device of claim 57, wherein the first rigid member comprises a twisted link and the second rigid member comprises a link.
- 64. The device of claim 63, wherein the distal link is laser cut.
- 65. The device of claim 63, wherein the link is selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyesters, and polyolefins.
- 66. The device of claim 56, wherein the anchor assembly only includes the first and second rigid members.
- 67. The device of claim 56, wherein the second rigid member is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 68. The device of claim 55, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 69. The device of claim 57, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary outer coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the second rigid member.
- 70. The device of claim 69, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary outer coil.
- 71. The device of claim 55, further comprising a deployment mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 72. The device of claim 71, wherein the deployment mechanism comprises an electrolytically severable junction adapted to detach from a core wire by imposition of an electric current on the core wire.
- 73. The device of claim 55, wherein the primary coil is sized to fit within an aneurysm.
- 74. A catheter assembly for occluding a body cavity, comprising:
a delivery device having a distal end; and a vaso-occlusive device associated with the distal end of the delivery device, the vaso-occlusive device comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly located within the coil lumen, the anchor assembly comprising one or more flexible joints and being fixedly coupled to the outer primary coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 75. The catheter assembly of claim 74, wherein the anchor assembly further comprises a plurality of rigid members, and the one or more flexible joints are located between the plurality of rigid members.
- 76. The catheter assembly of claim 75, wherein the plurality of members comprises first and second rigid members, one of the one or more flexible joints is located between the first and second rigid members, the first rigid member is fixedly coupled to the outer primary coil, and the second rigid member is fixedly coupled to the stretch-resisting member.
- 77. The catheter assembly of claim 76, wherein the first rigid member comprises an anchor coil and the second rigid member comprises a link.
- 78. The catheter assembly of claim 76, wherein the first rigid member comprises a twisted link.
- 79. The catheter assembly of claim 78, wherein the second rigid member comprises a twisted link.
- 80. The catheter assembly of claim 76, wherein the anchor assembly only includes the first and second rigid members.
- 81. The catheter assembly of claim 76, wherein the second rigid member is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 82. The catheter assembly of claim 74, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 83. The catheter assembly of claim 76, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary outer coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the second rigid member.
- 84. The catheter assembly of claim 83, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary outer coil.
- 85. The catheter assembly of claim 74, further comprising a deployment mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 86. The catheter assembly of claim 85, wherein the deployment mechanism comprises an electrolytically severable junction adapted to detach from a core wire by imposition of an electric current on the core wire.
- 87. The catheter assembly of claim 74, wherein the body cavity comprises an aneurysm.
- 88. The catheter assembly of claim 74, further comprising a catheter, wherein the delivery device is a core wire slidably disposed within the catheter, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably coupled to the core wire.
- 89. A vaso-occlusive device, comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly fixedly coupled with the primary outer coil, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor coil having windings that are disposed between the windings of the outer coil.
- 90. The device of claim 89, wherein the anchor coil is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 91. The device of claim 89, wherein each winding of the anchor coil is disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
- 92. The device of claim 89, wherein at least two windings of the anchor coil are disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
- 93. The device of claim 89, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 94. The device of claim 89, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the anchor coil.
- 95. The device of claim 94, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 96. The device of claim 89, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 97. The device of claim 89, further comprising a deployment mechanism coupled to the proximal end of the anchor coil.
- 98. The device of claim 97, wherein the deployment mechanism comprises an electrolytically severable junction adapted to detach from a core wire by imposition of an electrical current on the core wire.
- 99. The device of claim 89, wherein all of the windings of the anchor coil are disposed between the windings of the primary coil.
- 100. The device of claim 89, wherein the primary coil is sized to fit within an aneurysm.
- 101. A catheter assembly for occluding a body cavity comprising:
a delivery device having a distal end; and a vaso-occlusive device associated with the distal end of the delivery device, the vaso-occlusive device comprising:
an outer primary coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of the coil lumen and being coupled to the primary coil; and an anchor assembly fixedly coupled with the primary outer coil, the anchor assembly comprising an anchor coil having windings that are disposed between the windings of the outer coil.
- 102. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein the anchor coil is directly attached to the stretch-resisting member.
- 103. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein each winding of the anchor coil is disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
- 104. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein at least two windings of the anchor coil are disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
- 105. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein the stretch-resisting member comprises at least one polymeric filament.
- 106. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein a distal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the distal end of the primary coil and a proximal end of the stretch-resisting member is coupled to the anchor coil.
- 107. The catheter assembly of claim 106, wherein the distal end of the stretch-resisting member is directly attached to the distal end of the primary coil.
- 108. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein the anchor assembly is coupled to the proximal end of the primary coil.
- 109. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein the vaso-occlusive coil is detachably connected via an electrolytic joint.
- 110. The catheter assembly of claim 101, wherein the body cavity comprises an aneurysm.
- 111. The catheter assembly of claim 101, further comprising a catheter, wherein the delivery device is a core wire slidably disposed within the catheter, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably coupled to the core wire.
- 112. A method of manufacturing a vaso-occlusive having an anchor assembly, comprising:
winding a first wire into a first helical coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therethrough, wherein the proximal end of the first helical coil has open-pitched windings; winding a second wire into a second helical coil having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therethrough, wherein the second helical coil has open-pitched windings; and incorporating the second helical coil into the first helical coil, such that the open-pitched windings of the second helical coil are disposed between adjacent open-pitched windings of the first helical coil.
- 113. The method of claim 112, wherein the windings of the second helical coil are single winding open pitched.
- 114. The method of claim 112, wherein the windings of the second helical coil are double winding open-pitched.
- 115. The method of claim 112, wherein the distal end of the second helical form is tapered.
- 116. The method of claim 112, further comprising attaching a stretch-resisting member to the distal end of the second helical winding.
- 117. The method of claim 116, further comprising attaching the stretch-resisting member to the distal end of the first helical coil.
- 118. The method of claim 112, wherein the second helical coil is incorporated into the first helical coil by screwing the distal end of the second helical coil into the proximal end of the first helical coil.
- 119. The method of claim 112, wherein the entirety of the second helical coil is incorporated into the first helical coil.
- 120. A vaso-occlusive device, comprising
a plurality of primary coils, each having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a plurality of stretch-resisting members, each extending through at least a portion of a respective primary coil; and one or more detachable joints located between adjacent primary coils.
- 121. The vaso-occlusive device of claim 120, further comprising a first plurality of anchor assemblies associated with one of the proximal and distal ends of the respective primary coils, wherein first ends of the stretch-resisting members are coupled to the respective primary coils through the first plurality of anchor assemblies.
- 122. The vaso-occlusive device of claim 121, further comprising a second plurality of anchor assemblies associated with another of the proximal and distal ends of the respective primary coils, wherein second ends of the stretch-resisting members are coupled to the respective primary coils through the second plurality of anchor assemblies.
- 123. The device of claim 122, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises one or more flexible joints being fixedly coupled to the respective outer primary coil and the respective stretch-resisting member.
- 124. The device of claim 122, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor coil and a link fixedly coupled between the respective anchor coil and the respective stretch-resisting member.
- 125. The device of claim 122, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor chain having at least a proximal twisted link fixedly coupled to the respective primary coil and a distal link fixedly coupled to the respective stretch-resisting member.
- 126. The device of claim 125, wherein the distal link is twisted.
- 127. The device of claim 122, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor coil having windings that are disposed between the windings of the respective primary coil.
- 128. The device of claim 127, wherein each winding of the anchor coil is disposed between adjacent windings of the respective primary coil.
- 129. The device of claim 127, wherein at least two windings of the anchor coil are disposed between adjacent windings of the respective outer coil.
- 130. A catheter assembly for occluding a body cavity, comprising:
a delivery device having a distal end; and a vaso-occlusive device associated with the distal end of the delivery device, the vaso-occlusive device comprising:
a plurality of primary coils having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a plurality of stretch-resisting members, each stretch-resisting member extending through at least a portion of a respective primary coil and being coupled to the respective primary coil; and one or more severable joints located between adjacent primary coils.
- 131. The catheter assembly of claim 130, further comprising a catheter, wherein the delivery device is a plurality of core wires slidably disposed within the catheter, wherein the vaso-occlusive device is detachably coupled to the plurality of core wires.
- 132. The catheter assembly of claim 130, further comprising a first plurality of anchor assemblies, wherein a first end of the stretch-resisting members is coupled to the respective primary coils through the first plurality of anchor assemblies.
- 133. The catheter assembly of claim 130, further comprising a second plurality of anchor assemblies, wherein a second end of the stretch-resisting members is coupled to the respective primary coils through the second plurality of anchor assemblies.
- 134. The catheter assembly of claim 133, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises one or more flexible joints being fixedly coupled to the outer primary coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 135. The catheter assembly of claim 133, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor coil and a link fixedly coupled between the anchor coil and the stretch-resisting member.
- 136. The catheter assembly of claim 133, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor chain having at least a proximal twisted link fixedly coupled to the primary coil and a distal link fixedly coupled to the stretch-resisting member.
- 137. The catheter assembly of claim 136, wherein the distal link is twisted.
- 138. The catheter assembly of claim 133, wherein one or both of the first or second plurality of anchor assemblies comprises an anchor coil having windings that are disposed between the windings of the outer coil.
- 139. The catheter assembly of claim 138, wherein each winding of the anchor coil is disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
- 140. The catheter assembly of claim 127, wherein at least two windings of the anchor coil are disposed between adjacent windings of the outer coil.
