Claims
- 1. An androgenic steroid compound of the formula (I) ##STR5## wherein: R.sup.1 is H;
- R.sup.2 is an .alpha.-substituent which is unsubstituted lower alkyl or fluoro-substituted lower alkyl;
- R.sup.3 is H, or an acyl group (CO)--R.sup.4, where R.sup.4 is C.sub.1-18 alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, or R.sup.4 is C.sub.4-18 cycloalkyl or substituted cycloalkyl, or R.sup.4 is C.sub.6-18 aryl or substituted aryl or R.sup.4 is a 5 to 15 membered heterocycle or substituted heterocycle, and wherein R.sup.4 may optionally be substituted with 1 to 3 heteroatoms or 1 to 5 halogen atoms;
- R.sup.5 is .alpha.-H; and
- R.sup.6 is .beta.-unsubstituted or substituted lower alkyl, unsubstituted or substituted alkenyl or unsubstituted or substituted alkynyl, or
- R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 is .dbd.CH.sub.2.
- 2. The androgenic steroid compound of claim 1, wherein R.sup.1 is H;
- R.sup.2 is CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sup.3 is H, or R.sup.3 is (CO)--R.sup.4, wherein R.sup.4 is CH.sub.3, C.sub.2 H.sub.5, n-C.sub.6 H.sub.13, (CH.sub.3).sub.2 CH, cyclopentyl-CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2, trans-(4-n-butyl)cyclohexyl, n-C.sub.9 H.sub.19, (CH.sub.2).sub.2 (CO)(CH.sub.2).sub.5 CH.sub.3, phenyl-CH.sub.2 or 3-pyridyl;
- R.sup.5 is .alpha.-H and R.sup.6 is .beta.-CH.sub.3.
- 3. The androgenic steroid compound of claim 1, which is selected from the group consisting of 7.alpha.,11.beta.-dimethyl-17.beta.-hydroxyestr-4-en-3-one, 17.beta.-hydroxy-7.alpha.-methyl-11-methyleneestr-4-en-3-one, 7.alpha.,11.beta.-dimethyl-17.beta.-heptanoyloxyestr-4-en-3-one, 7.alpha.,11.beta.-dimethyl-17.beta.-��(2-cyclopentylethyl)carbonyl!oxy!estr-4-en-3-one, 7.alpha.,11.beta.-dimethyl-17.beta.-(phenylacetyloxy)estr-4-en-3-one, and 7.alpha.,11.crclbar.-dimethyl-17.beta.-��(trans-4-�n-butyl!cyclohexyl!carbonyl!oxy!estr-4-en one.
- 4. The androgenic steroid compound of claim 1, wherein
- R.sup.2 is .alpha.-CH.sub.3 ;
- R.sup.3 is H;
- R.sup.5 is .alpha.-H; and
- R.sup.6 is .beta.-CH.sub.3.
- 5. A pharmaceutical composition, which comprises
- a) at least one compound of the formula (I) of claim 1; and
- b) a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier.
- 6. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 5, which further comprises at least one other pharmacologically active compound.
- 7. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 6, wherein said other pharmacologically active compound is selected from the group consisting of progestins and GnRH analogs.
- 8. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7 which is in a form suitable for injection.
- 9. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in a form suitable for oral administration.
- 10. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in a form suitable for inhalation.
- 11. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in a form suitable for dermal administration.
- 12. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in a form suitable for buccal administration.
- 13. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in form of a skin patch.
- 14. The pharmaceutical composition of claims 5, 6 or 7, which is in a form suitable for intramuscular administration.
- 15. A subdermal implant for a mammal, comprising at least one or more compounds of claim 1.
- 16. A patch for adhesion to a skin surface of a mammal, which comprises at least one or more compounds of claim 1.
- 17. Containing means, comprising therein at least one or more compounds of claim 1 in aerosol form suitable for inhalation.
- 18. The containing means of claim 17, which is a metallic or plastic container, comprising spraying means for releasing said aerosol therefrom.
- 19. A method of effecting hormonal treatment in a mammal, which comprises administering an effective amount of one or more androgenic steroid compounds of claim 1 to a mammal in need thereof.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein said mammal is a human.
- 21. The method of claim 19, wherein said mammal is a horse, cow, pig, sheep, ox or dog.
- 22. A method of controlling male fertility in a mammal, which comprises administrating an effective amount of one or more androgenic steroid compounds of claim 1 to a mammal in need thereof.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein said mammal is a human.
- 24. The method or claim 22, wherein said mammal is a horse, cow, pig, sheep, ox or dog.
- 25. The method of claim 22, which further comprises administering one or more other reproductively active compounds before, with or after administration of said one or more androgenic steroid compounds.
