Claims
- 1. An androst-4-en-19-ol having the formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of oxo and hydroxy;
- R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, lower alkenyl having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and lower alkynyl having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 and OR.sub.4 when taken together is oxo;
- R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, trialkylsilyl in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, triphenylsilyl, 2-tetrahydropyranyl, 4-tetrahydropyranyl, 1-cycloalkenyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, 1-methoxycycloalkyl and 1-ethoxycycloalkyl in which the cycloalkyl group has from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, with the proviso that R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 cannot both be hydrogen at the same time, and with the further proviso that when R.sub.4 is 2-tetrahydropyranyl and R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are all hydrogen, then R.sub.3 and R.sub.5 cannot both be hydrogen and R.sub.1 cannot be oxo;
- R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are hydrogen and methyl with the proviso that when R.sub.1 is oxo, R.sub.4 is hydrogen, acyl or when taken together with R.sub.3 is oxo, R.sub.5 is hydrogen and R.sub.9 is methyl, then R.sub.6, R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 cannot all be hydrogen at the same time.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1 in which R.sub.1 is oxo and H(OR.sub.2), R.sub.2 is hydrogen, R.sub.5 is hydrogen and R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, trialkylsilyl in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, triphenylsilyl, 4-tetrahydropyranyl, 1-cycloalkenyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, 1-methoxycycloalkyl and 1-ethoxycycloalkyl in which the cycloalkyl group has from 5 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 3. A compound according to claim 1 in which R.sub.1 is oxo and H(OR.sub.2), R.sub.2 is hydrogen, R.sub.4 is hydrogen and when taken together with R.sub.3 is oxo, R.sub.5 is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, trialkylsilyl in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, triphenylsilyl, 2-tetrahydropyranyl, 4-tetrahydropyranyl, 1-cycloalkenyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, 1-methoxycycloalkyl and 1-ethoxycycloalkyl in which the cycloalkyl group has from 5 to 7 carbon atoms.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1 in which R.sub.1 is oxo and H(OR.sub.2), R.sub.2 is hydrogen and R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, trialkylsilyl in which the alkyl group has from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, triphenylsilyl, 2-tetrahydropyranyl, 4-tetrahydropyranyl, 1-cycloalkenyl having from 5 to 7 carbon atoms, 1-methoxycycloalkyl and 1-ethoxycycloalkyl in which the cycloalkyl group has from 5 to 7 carbon atoms.
