Claims
- 1. In a gated system for obtaining multiple periodic samples of the properties of a signal of interest which properties may vary with time, the method of creating an optimal sampling period and controlling the state transition of said signal of interest while ensuring that any such gated sample of said signal of interest is minimally affected by electrical noise associated with switching transients or other periodic noise, said method comprising:
- (a) sampling said signal of interest during only a preselected portion of its said state;
- (b) controlling the transition of the signal of interest from a present state to the next consecutive state in such manner that the signal is delayed until said sampling step is completed so as to minimize transmission of transients and other periodic noise;
- (c) initiating the transition of the signal of interest to its next successive state in response to the termination of its present sampling; and
- (d) allowing said signal to restabilize after a state change before initiating sampling in a subsequent selected sampling period.
- 2. In the system according to claim 1, the method of initiating said transitions, said method comprising:
- (a) making the signal of interest ready to be sent out by using a signal producing system;
- (b) initiating the sending out of a new signal state by using the closing edge of the gating period as the initiator.
- 3. In combination with a gated system for obtaining multiple periodic samples of the properties of a signal of interest which may vary with time, apparatus for creating an optimal sampling period and controlling its relationship to a state transition of said signal of interest while ensuring that any such gated sample is minimally affected by electrical noise associated with state-to-state transitions of said signal of interest, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) measuring means for determining the given state of said signal of interest;
- (b) sampling means for gating said signal of interest into said measuring means;
- (c) means for initiating the transition of said signal to its next consecutive state in response to the termination of such gating; and
- (d) delay means for activating said sampling means only after an initial time in each sampling period which allows the signal of interest to stabilize after the preceding transition.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said gate-strobed measuring, sampling, and transition-initiating means are combined with a single- or double-sided synchronous modulator/demodulator means.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said signal initiating means comprises:
- (a) detection means for determining the presence of said signal of interest and the presence of the signal controlling said gating means; and
- (b) means for initiating the transition of said signal of interest in response to a change in condition of said detection means.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said measuring means comprises an electronic circuit which includes a synchronous demodulator, an analog switching gate, and an A to D converter; and said initiating means comprising a latch.
