Claims
- 1. A process for stabilizing organic acid anhydrides against color changes which comprises the steps of:a) providing an organic acid anhydride; b) contacting said anhydride with an acid halide of a carboxylic acid; and c) contacting said anhydride with a derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid.
- 2. The process according to claim 1 wherein said anhydride is maleic acid anhydride.
- 3. The process according to claim 1 wherein the acid halide is selected from the group consisting of formyl chloride, acetyl chloride, phthaloyl chloride, succinyl chloride, and maleyl chloride.
- 4. The process according to claim 1 wherein said derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid comprises at least one of: wherein R1, R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of a cationic species; hydrogen; C1 through C12 straight-chain, branched, or cyclic alkyl; C1 through C12 straight-chain, branched, or cyclic alkenyl; substituted or unsubstituted phenyl; and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of a cationic species; hydrogen; C1 through C12 straight-chain, branched, or cyclic alkyl; C1 through C12 straight-chain, branched, or cyclic alkenyl; substituted or unsubstituted phenyl; and a is any of the integers 1, 2, 3, or 4, and including all isomers thereof.
- 5. The process of claim 1 in which said derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid is a derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid which is non-aromatic in character.
- 6. The process of claim 1 in which said derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid is a derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of: gluconic, glucoheptonic, hydroxyacetic, hydroxyproprionic, and hydroxybutyric acids.
- 7. A process for stabilizing organic acid anhydrides against color changes which comprises the steps of:a) providing an organic acid anhydride in the liquid state; b) causing an acid halide of a carboxylic acid to exist within said anhydride in the liquid state to form a first mixture; c) causing at least one derivative of a hydroxy carboxylic acid to exist within said first mixture so as to form a final mixture; and d) effecting agitation sufficient to render said final mixture at least reasonably homogeneous.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 further comprising the step of:e) maintaining said organic acid anhydride in its liquid state.
- 9. A process according to claim 7 further comprising the step of:e) causing said organic acid anhydride to undergo a phase change from the liquid state to the solid state.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 further comprising the step of:f) causing said organic anhydride to undergo a subsequent phase change from the solid state to the liquid state.
