Claims
- 1. A highly stable mixture of a liquid fertilizer solution and an aqueous dispersion of a liquid biocide, said composition being adapted to the application of said composition to plants by spraying, said composition comprising:
- A. an aqueous liquid fertilizer solution selected from the group consisting of
- 1. an ammonium nitrate and urea and water solution having a total concentration of about 20 to about 50 percent by weight solids, and
- 2. an ammonium nitrate and water solution, said ammonium nitrate constituting about 20 to about 50 percent by weight solids, and
- B. a dispersion of a liquid biocide in said aqueous liquid fertilizer solution made using the emulsifiable concentrate comprising about 90 to 99 percent by weight of a liquid biocide and about 1 to about 10 percent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant which is the reaction product of a polybasic acid or anhydride with a polyoxyalkylene glycol ethoxylate having the formula
- Y[(A).sub.n --(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.m --H].sub.x
- wherein A is an alkylene oxide having 4 carbon atoms and selected from the group consisting of oxybutylene, the residue of tetrahydrofuran, and mixtures thereof; Y is an initiator having up to 20 carbon atoms containing only the elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen and x is an integer of at least 2, n is an integer such that the molecular weight is about 1000 to about 2500, m is an integer such that the oxyethylene content of the entire compound, mx oxyethylene groups, constitutes about 20 to about 80 percent by weight of the total oxyalkylene content or said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant and at least one anionic alkylaromatic sulphur- or phosphorus-containing ester surfactant having an HLB of at least 15.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said biocide comprises a herbicide selected from at least one of the group consisting of 2-chloro-2'-6'-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide, a, a, a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine, and N(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine and said initiator has 2 to 6 active hydrogen atoms and is selected from at least one of the group consisting of carboxylic acids; alkylene diols, triols, and polyols; alkanols; phenols; amines; and alkanolamines.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said surfactant blend comprises a mixture of about 50 to about 95 percent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant and about 5 percent to about 50 percent by weight of an anionic surfactant and wherein said anionic surfactant is selected from at least one of the group consisting of the water-soluble salts of alkylaromatic sulfonates, phosphonates, phosphates, and sulphates having about 9 to about 18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is the polybasic acid ester of the reaction product of 1,2-butylene oxide and ethylene oxide and wherein the hydrophobic butylene oxide derived portion of said polymer product has a molecular weight of about 1000 to about 2500 and wherein about 30 to about 70 percent by weight of the total molecular weight of the polymer is derived from ethylene oxide.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the proportion of emulsifiable concentrate in said liquid fertilizer solution is about 1 to about 5 percent by weight of the total weight of said composition and wherein said anionic surfactant is selected from at least one of the group consisting of the ammonium, alkaline earth, and alkali metal salts of alkylaromatic sulfonates, phosphonates, phosphates, and sulphates and wherein said polybasic acid is selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphorus acid, boric acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, tataric acid, diglycolic acid, phthalic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, trimellitic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said anionic surfactant is calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is the maleic acid half-ester of a 1,4-butanediol-initiated reaction product of 1,2-butylene oxide and ethylene oxide wherein the hydrophobic butylene oxide derived portion of the polymer has a molecular weight of about 1200 and wherein the oxyethylene content of the polymer is 60 percent by weight of the total weight of the polymer and wherein said surfactant blend comprises a mixture of 60 percent by weight of said nonionic surfactant and 9 percent by weight of said anionic surfactant all based upon the total weight of said mixture.
- 6. The composition of claim 4 wherein the polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant utilized in said emulsifiable concentrate is the maleic acid half-ester of a 1,4-butane diol-initiated 1,2-butylene oxide-ethylene oxide reaction product having a molecular weight of about 1200 in the hydrophobic butylene oxide derived portion of the polymer, wherein the oxyethylene content is 40 percent by weight of the total weight of the polymer, wherein the anionic surfactant is calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant present in the proportion of 60 percent by weight and said anionic surfactant present in the proportion of 9 percent by weight, all based upon the total weight of said surfactant blend.
- 7. A method of applying a primarily aqueous mixture of a liquid fertilizer and a liquid biocide to plants as a spray comprising
- A. preparing a highly stable aqueous liquid fertilizer solution containing dispersion of an emulsifiable concentrate of a liquid biocide in said liquid fertilizer wherein said emulsifiable concentrate comprises about 90 to 99 percent by weight of a liquid biocide and about 1 to about 10 percent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant which is the reaction product of a polybasic acid or anhydride with a polyalkylene glycol ethoxylate having the formula
- Y[(A).sub.n --(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.m --H].sub.x
- wherein A is an alkylene oxide having 4 carbon atoms and selected from the group consisting of oxybutylene, the residue of tetrahydrofuran, and mixtures thereof; Y is an initiator having up to 20 carbon atoms containing only the elements of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen and x is an integer of at least 2, n is an integer such that the molecular wieght is about 1000 to about 2500, m is an integer such that the oxyethylene content of the entire compound, mx oxyethylene groups, constitutes about 20 to about 80 percent by weight of the total oxyalkylene content or said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant and at least one anionic alkylaromatic sulphur- or phosphorus-containing ester surfactant having an HLB of at least 15 by admixing about 95 to 99 percent by weight of said liquid fertilizer with about 1 to about 5 percent by weight of said emulsifiable concentrate and
- B. applying said mixture to plants.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein said biocide comprises a herbicide selected from at least one of the group consisting of 2-chloro-2'-6'-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide, a, a, a-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine, and N(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine and said polyoxyalkylene ester polybasic acid ester of acids selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphorus acid, boric acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, tataric acid, diglycolic acid, phthalic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, trimellitic acid, and mixtures thereof said initiator having 2 to 6 active hydrogen atoms and selected from at least one of the group consisting of carboxylic acids; alkylene diols, triols, and polyols; alkanols; phenols; amines; and alkanolamines, and said anionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of the water-soluble salts of alkylaromatic sulphonates, phosphonates, sulphates, and phosphates, wherein the alkyl group contains about 9 to about 18 carbon atoms.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein said surfactant blend is a mixture of about 60 to about 95 percent by weight of a polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant and about 5 percent to about 40 percent by weight of an anionic surfactant wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is the reaction product of a polybasic acid selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphorus acid, boric acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, tataric acid, diglycolic acid, phthalic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, trimellitic acid, and mixtures thereof with a 1,4-butanediol-initiated polymer reaction product of 1,2-butylene oxide and ethylene oxide wherein the hydrophobic butylene oxide portion of the polymer is present in a sufficient amount to provide a molecular weight of about 1000 to about 2500 and wherein the oxyethylene portion of the polymer constitutes about 30 to about 70 percent by weight of the total molecular weight of the polymer; and wherein said anionic surfactant is selected from at least one of the group consisting of the ammonium, alkaline earth, and alkali metal salts of an alkylaromatic sulfonate.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said liquid fertilizer is selected from the group consisting of
- 1. an ammonium nitrate and urea water solution having a total solids concentration of about 20 to about 50 percent by weight solids, and
- 2. an ammonium nitrate and water solution, said ammonium nitrate constituting about 20 to about 50 percent by weight solids.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is the maleic acid half-ester of a 1,4-butanediol-initiated 1,2-butylene oxide and ethylene oxide derived polymer reaction product having a molecular weight of the butylene oxide derived hydrophobe of about 1200 and an oxyethylene content of 60 percent by weight of the total molecular weight of said polymer and wherein said anionic surfactant is calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is present in the amount of 60 percent by weight and said anionic surfactant present in the amount of 9 percent by weight, all based on the total weight of said mixture.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein said polyoxyalkylene ester surfactant is the maleic acid half-ester of a 1,4-butanediol-initiated 1,2-butylene oxide and ethylene oxide derived reaction product having a molecular weight of the butylene oxide-derived hydrophobe of about 1200 and an oxyethylene content of 40 percent by weight of the total molecular weight of the polymer and wherein said anionic surfactant is calcium dodecylbenzene sulfonate and wherein said surfactant blend comprises a mixture of said nonionic surfactant present in the amount of 60 percent by weight of said anionic surfactant present in the amount of 9 percent by weight, all based on the total weight of said mixture.
