Claims
- 1. A method of providing power to a downhole tool, comprising:providing a housing adapted to be mounted about an exterior circumference of a cylindrical member, the housing comprising a plurality of mutually engagable annular segments, wherein at least one of the annular segments defines a chamber; placing a cell for providing power within the chamber; mounting the plurality of annular segments about the cylindrical member; and providing power to the tool from the cell.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising securing the cell within the chamber with an epoxy.
- 3. The method of claim 1, further comprising securing the cell within the chamber with mechanical means.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the cell is an annular cell.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the cell is a cylindrical cell.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a seal element arranged to provide a passage for power flow from the cell through the annular segments.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the power flow is electricity.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the seal element comprises a glass seal integrally mounted in the cell.
- 9. The method of claim 6, wherein the seal element comprises a glass seal integrally mounted in the chamber.
- 10. The method of claim 6, wherein the seal element comprises a glass-to-metal seal with a chamfered rim.
- 11. A method of providing power to a tool, comprising:providing a housing adapted to be mounted about an exterior circumference of an elongate member, the housing comprising a plurality of mutually engageable annular segments; placing one or more battery cells for providing power within the housing; mounting the plurality of annular segments about the elongate member; and providing power to the tool from the one or more battery cells.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are annular.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are cylindrical.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells comprise one or more annular cells and one or more cylindrical cells.
- 15. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are connected in series.
- 16. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are connected in parallel.
- 17. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are connected in series and parallel.
- 18. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are secured within the housing with an epoxy.
- 19. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more battery cells are secured within the housing with mechanical means.
- 20. The method of claim 11, further comprising providing a seal element arranged to provide a passage for power flow from the one or more battery cells through the annular segments.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the seal element comprises a glass seal integrally mounted in the one or more battery cells.
- 22. The method of claim 20, wherein the seal element comprises a glass seal integrally mounted in the housing.
- 23. The method of claim 20, wherein the seal element comprises a glass-to-metal seal with a chamfered rim.
- 24. A method of providing power to a tool, comprising:providing a housing adapted to be mounted about an exterior circumference of an elongate member, the housing including a plurality of mutually engageable annular sections; placing one or more electronic devices for providing power within the housing; mounting the plurality of annular segments about the elongate member; and providing power to the tool from the one or more electrical devices.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the one or more electrical devices is selected from battery cells, control circuitry, data recording circuitry, and electronic sensors.
- 26. The method of claim 24, wherein the one or more electrical devices are secured within the housing with an epoxy.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the one or more electrical devices are secured within the housing with mechanical means.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the mechanical means is selected from screws and rivets.
