Claims
- 1. An antenna system for a radio frequency (RF) electronic device, the system comprising:
a printed circuit board (PCB) having a top surface and a bottom surface; a ground plane on the bottom surface; and an active element mounted on the top surface, wherein the active element comprises a first segment positioned in a top surface plane and connected to a second segment oriented perpendicular to the top surface.
- 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the bottom surface of the PCB is mounted on or near a metal object.
- 3. The system of claim 2 wherein the electronic device comprises a tire pressure monitoring system and the metal object comprises a wheel rim.
- 4. The system of claim 1 wherein first segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 5. The system of claim 1 wherein second segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 6. The system of claim 1 wherein second segment comprises an arch.
- 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the system further comprises a tuning capacitance connected between the first segment and the ground plane.
- 8. The system of claim 1 wherein the system further comprises an input/output connection at an end of the second segment opposite the first segment for connection to the electronic device.
- 9. For use in a vehicle tire pressure monitoring electronic device, an antenna system comprising:
a printed circuit board (PCB) having a top surface and a bottom surface; a ground plane on the bottom surface; and an active element mounted on the top surface, wherein the active element comprises a first segment positioned in a top surface plane and connected to a second segment oriented perpendicular to the top surface, and the bottom surface is mounted on or near a wheel rim.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein first segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 11. The system of claim 9 wherein second segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 12. The system of claim 9 wherein the second segment comprises an arch.
- 13. The system of claim 9 wherein the system further comprises a tuning capacitance connected between the first segment and the ground plane.
- 14. The system of claim 9 wherein the system further comprises an input/output connection at an end of the second segment opposite the first segment for connection to the electronic device.
- 15. For use in a vehicle tire pressure monitoring system, a method of reducing coupling between an antenna and a metal object, the method comprising:
providing a printed circuit board (PCB) having a top surface and a bottom surface; providing a ground plane on the bottom surface; mounting an active element on the top surface, wherein the active element comprises a first segment positioned in a top surface plane and connected to a second segment oriented perpendicular to the top surface; and mounting the bottom surface on or near a wheel rim.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein first segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein second segment is “C” or “U” shaped.
- 18. The method of claim 15 wherein second segment comprises an arch.
- 19. The method of claim 15 further comprising providing a tuning capacitance connected between the first segment and the ground plane.
- 20. The method of claim 15 further comprising providing an input/output connection at an end of the second segment opposite the first segment.
