Claims
- 1. An anti-cross threading fastener, comprising:
- a substantially round shank member having first and second ends and a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of threads around a circumference of said shank member, the plurality of threads being adapted to mate with corresponding threads of a receiving member;
- at least one thread of the plurality of threads proximate the first end of said shank member and having an outside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread from;
- the remaining plurality of threads having a major diameter and at least one other thread form; and
- the outside diameter of the at least one thread is smaller than the major diameter of the remaining plurality of threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is a thread form such that the at least one thread of the plurality of threads is adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of a receiving member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 2. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1 wherein the at least one thread having the transitional surface is a plurality of threads having transitional surfaces such that the plurality of threads are adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of a receiving member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 3. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, further comprising at least one other thread of the plurality of threads proximate the second end of said shank member and having an outside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form; the outside diameter of the at least one other thread is smaller than the major diameter of the remaining plurality of threads; the at least one thread form of the at least one other thread of the plurality of threads is different from the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads; and the surface of the at least one other thread is a transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one other thread is a thread form such that the at least one other thread is adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of another receiving member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 4. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, further comprising a protruding diameter member attached to and collinear with the first end of said shank member, said protruding diameter member adapted to restrict a presentation angle between said shank member and a receiving member.
- 5. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 4, wherein a diameter of said protruding diameter member is about 90 percent of a minor diameter of the plurality of threads and about one diameter of said shank member in length.
- 6. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 7. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 8. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 9. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
- 10. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 1, further comprising a head fixedly attached to the second end of said shank member, said head adapted for transmission of rotational torque to said shank member.
- 11. An anti-cross threading fastener, comprising:
- a first fastener having a length, first and second ends, and a circular opening inside of the fastener, the opening running longitudinally to the length;
- a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of threads inside said circular opening, the plurality of threads being adapted to mate with corresponding threads of a second fastener;
- at least one thread of the plurality of threads toward the first end of said fastener and having an inside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form;
- the remaining plurality of threads having a minor diameter and at least one other thread form; and
- the inside diameter of the at least one thread is larger than the minor diameter of the remaining plurality of threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is a thread form such that the at least one thread of the plurality of threads is adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of the second fastener until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 12. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein tie at least one thread having the transitional surface is a plurality of threads having transitional surfaces so that the plurality of threads arc adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of the second fastener until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 13. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 12, further comprising at least one other thread of the plurality of threads proximate the second end of said first fastener and having an inside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form; the inside diameter of the at least one other thread is larger than the minor diameter of the remaining plurality of threads; the at least one thread form of the at least one other thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads; and the surface of the at least one other thread is an other transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one other thread is a thread form such that the at least one other thread of the plurality of threads is adapted to cam over corresponding mating threads of the second fastener until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 14. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the first fastener is a nut adapted to mate with a bolt.
- 15. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the first fastener is a coupling adapted to mate with a rod.
- 16. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the first fastener is a block of material and the circular opening is counter sunk therein.
- 17. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 18. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 19. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 20. The anti-cross threading fastener of claim 11, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
- 21. An anti-cross threading fastener system, said system comprising:
- a substantially round shank member having first and second ends and a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of threads around a circumference of said shank member;
- a receiving member for receiving the first end and plurality of threads of said shank member and having corresponding threads inside said receiving member for mating with the plurality of threads of said shank member;
- at least one thread of the plurality of threads proximate the first end of said shank member and having an outside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form;
- the remaining plurality of threads having a major diameter and at least one other thread form; and
- the outside diameter of the at least one thread is smaller than the major diameter of the remaining plurality of threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is a thread form such that the at least one thread of the plurality of threads cams over the corresponding mating threads of said receiving member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween whereby a longitudinal axis of said shank member and a longitudinal axis of said receiving member become substantially collinearly aligned.
- 22. The system of claim 21, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 23. The system of claim 21, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 24. The system of claim 21, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 25. The system of claim 21, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
- 26. An anti-cross threading fastener system, said system comprising:
- a substantially round shank member having first and second ends and a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of first threads around a circumference of said shank member;
- a receiving member for receiving the first end and plurality of first threads of said shank member and having a plurality of second threads inside said receiving member which mate with the plurality of first threads; and
- at least one thread of the plurality of second threads of said receiving member proximate to the first end of said shank member and having an inside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form;
- the remaining plurality of second threads having a minor diameter and at least one other thread form; and
- the inside diameter of the at least one thread of the second plurality of threads is larger than the minor diameter of the remaining plurality of second threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread of the second plurality of threads is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of second threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one thread of the second plurality of threads is a thread form such that the at least one thread of the plurality of second threads cams over the plurality of first threads until there is substantially collinear alignment between said shank member and said receiving member.
- 27. The system of claim 26, further comprising at least one thread of the plurality of first threads proximate the first end of said shank member and having an outside diameter, a surface and at least one thread form; the outside diameter of the at least one thread of the plurality of first threads is smaller than a major diameter of the remaining plurality of first threads; the at least one thread form of the at least one thread of the plurality of first threads is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining threads; and the surface of the at least one thread of the plurality of first threads is an other transitional surface and the at least one thread form of the at least one thread of the plurality of first threads is a thread form such that the at least one thread of the plurality of first threads cams over the plurality of second threads until there is substantially collinear alignment between said shank member and said receiving member whereby a longitudinal axis of said shank member and a longitudinal axis of said receiving member become substantially collinearly aligned.
- 28. The system of claim 26, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 29. The system of claim 26, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 30. The system of claim 26, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 31. The system of claim 26, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
- 32. A method of correcting misalignment between first and second members of a threaded fastener to prevent cross threading, said method comprising the steps of:
- inserting a first end of a first member into a second member at a non-collinear angle, the first member having a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of threads around a circumference of the first member; at least one thread of the plurality of threads proximate the first end of said first member and having an outside diameter, a surface and at least one thread form; the remaining plurality of threads having a major diameter and at least one other thread form; the outside diameter of the at least one thread is smaller than the major diameter of the remaining plurality of threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface, the plurality of threads being adapted to mate with corresponding threads of the second member;
- rotating the first member in relation to the second member, wherein the at least one thread of the plurality of threads proximate the first end of the first member engages the corresponding mating threads of the second member such that the at least one thread of the plurality of threads of the first member cams over corresponding mating threads of the second member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 33. The method of claim 32, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 34. The method of claim 32, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 35. The method of claim 32, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 36. The method of claim 32, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
- 37. A method of correcting misalignment between first and second members of a threaded fastener to prevent cross threading, said method comprising the steps of:
- inserting a first end of a first member into an opening of a second member at a non-collinear angle, the second member having a continuous helix comprised of a plurality of threads in the opening, at least one thread of the plurality of threads proximate the first end of said first member and having an inside diameter, a surface, and at least one thread form; the remaining plurality of threads having a minor diameter and at least one other thread form; the inside diameter of the at least one thread is larger than the minor diameter of the remaining plurality of threads, the at least one thread form of the at least one thread is different than the at least one other thread form of the remaining plurality of threads, and the surface of the at least one thread is a transitional surface, the plurality of threads being adapted to mate with corresponding threads of the first member;
- rotating the first member in relation to the second member, wherein the at least one thread of the plurality of threads engages the corresponding mating threads of the first member such that the at least one thread of the plurality of threads of the second member cams over corresponding mating threads of the first member until there is substantially collinear alignment therebetween.
- 38. The method of claim 37, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a smoothly curved shape.
- 39. The method of claim 37, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is an angled crest flat shape.
- 40. The method of claim 37, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a flat truncated crest shape.
- 41. The method of claim 37, wherein the transitional surface of the at least one thread is a curved shape approximated by a plurality of flat and curved surfaces.
