Claims
- 1. A valve lifter assembly for operating with a camshaft, the valve lifter assembly comprising:a valve lifter including an elongated body having a predetermined orientation for operating with the camshaft; a roller rotatively mounted to the body having an axis of rotation that is substantially parallel to an axis of rotation of the camshaft with the lifter body in its predetermined orientation; an engine block including bores configured to slidingly receive valve lifter bodies therein; an anti-rotation member for keeping the body in the predetermined orientation thereof; a crescent-shaped portion on the anti-rotation member having a curved surface for mating with the curvature of the bore; a shoulder on the anti-rotation member for mating with a corner about the bore to maintain the member in its predetermined position; and a flat surface extending between the ends of the curved surface of the crescent-shaped portion of the anti-rotation member for engaging the lifter body to prevent rotation thereof.
- 2. The valve lifter assembly of claim 1 wherein the anti-rotation member has a portion thereof adapted to seat in the engine block outside the bore for being fastened thereto.
- 3. The valve lifter assembly of claim 1 wherein the valve lifter body includes a planar portion, and the flat surface of the crescent-shaped portion of the anti-rotation member extends for a short distance into the bore for engaging the planar portion to guide the valve lifter body and prevents rotation thereof as it is reciprocated by the camshaft with the short flat surface in the bore minimizing the frictional wear between the flat surface and planar portion.
- 4. The valve lifter assembly of claim 1 wherein the anti-rotation member spans two adjacent bores in the engine block for receiving valve lifters.
- 5. A valve lifter assembly for operating with a camshaft, the valve lifter assembly comprising:a first and a second adjacent valve lifter including an elongated body having a predetermined orientation for operating with the camshaft; a planar portion on the first and second valve lifter bodies; a roller rotatively mounted to each body having an axis of rotation that is substantially parallel to an axis of rotation of the camshaft with the lifter body in its predetermined orientation; an engine block including bores configured to slidingly receive valve lifter bodies therein; an anti-rotation member for keeping the body of the first and the second adjacent_valve lifter in the predetermined orientation thereof; a first and a second crescent-shaped portions each having a flat surface of the anti-rotation member that extends into a first and a second adjacent bore for engaging the planar portions to guide the valve lifter bodies and prevent rotation thereof as the first and second valve lifters are reciprocated by the camshaft with the crescent-shaped portions in the bore minimizing the frictional wear between the flat surfaces of the anti-rotation member and planar portions of the first and second lifter bodies.
- 6. The valve lifter assembly of claim 5 wherein the first and second flat surfaces and the valve lifter bodies planar portions have predetermined lengths in the axial direction with the planar portions being at least five times the length of the flat surfaces.
- 7. The valve lifter assembly of claim 5 wherein the planar portions do not extend the full length of the lifter bodies.
- 8. The valve lifter assembly of claim 5 wherein the crescent-shaped portions have said flat surface that extends a short distance in the bore of the engine block.
