Claims
- 1. A cosmetic composition which absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and which transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 millimicrons to 400 millimicrons comprising a solution or suspension of a U. V. absorbing effective amount of an anti-solar agent of the formula ##STR8## wherein R represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and fluorine and alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R' and R" each independently represent a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and SO.sub.3 M wherein M represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, organic ammonium group and a metal, wherein at least one of R' and R" is other than hydrogen and R" is a substituent at the para or meta position relative to the bornylidene ring.
- 2. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein said compound is present in amounts of 0.05 to 10% by weight of said composition.
- 3. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 which also includes 0.001 to 0.05% by weight of a photosensitive dye.
- 4. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 which also includes 0.001 to 0.05% by weight of a photosensitive dye and 0.5 to 5% by weight of a cosmetic film-forming resin.
- 5. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein said anti-solar agent is in solution or suspension in a medium selected from the group consisting of water, alcohol and a hydro-alcoholic solution, an oleoalcoholic solution, a cream, a gel or an aerosol.
- 6. The composition of claim 5 wherein said medium is water.
- 7. The composition of claim 5 wherein said medium is alcohol.
- 8. The composition of claim 5 wherein said medium is a hydroalcoholic solution.
- 9. The composition of claim 5 wherein said medium is an oleoalcoholic solution.
- 10. The composition of claim 5 wherein said medium is a cream, a gel, an oil or an emulsion.
- 11. The composition of claim 7 wherein said alcohol is ethanol.
- 12. The composition of claim 5 which also includes an aerosol propellant and said composition is packaged under pressure in an aerosol container.
- 13. The cosmetic composition of claim 1 wherein said anti-solar agent is a compound of the formula ##STR9##
- 14. A U. V. radiation absorbing cosmetic composition which absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and which transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 millimicrons to 400 millimicrons comprising a solution or suspension of a U. V. absorbing effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR10## wherein one of R' and R" is a hydrogen and the other is SO.sub.3 M wherein M represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, sodium, potassium and tris (2-hydroxy ethyl) ammonium and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl and chlorine.
- 15. A U. V. radiation absorbing cosmetic composition which absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and which transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 millimicrons to 400 millimicrons comprising a solution or suspension of a U. V. absorbing effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR11##
- 16. A U.V. radiation absorbing cosmetic composition which absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and which transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 millimicrons to 400 millimicrons comprising a solution or suspension of a U.V. absorbing effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR12##
- 17. Process for protecting cosmetic compositions susceptible of being altered by actinic radiation comprising incorporating into said composition a compound of the formula ##STR13## wherein R represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and fluorine, and alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R' and R" each independently represent a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and SO.sub.3 M wherein M represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, organic ammonium group and a metal, wherein at least one of R' and R" is other than hydrogen and R" is a substituent at the para or meta position relative to the bornylidene ring, said compound being present in amounts of 0.05-5 percent by weight of said composition wherein said composition absorbs ultraviolet rays at 280 to 315 millimicrons and transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 to 400 millimicrons.
- 18. The process of claim 17 wherein said compound has the formula ##STR14##
- 19. A cosmetic composition which absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and which transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 millimicrons to 400 millimicrons, said composition comprising a solution or suspension of an effective ultraviolet absorbing amount of an anti-solar agent of the formula ##STR15## wherein R represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and fluorine and alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R' is SO.sub.3 M wherein M represents a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, organic ammonium group and a metal and R" is hydrogen at the para or meta position relative to the bornylidene ring.
- 20. The composition of claim 19 wherein said anti-solar agent is sodium 3-benzylidene-2-oxo-10-bornane sulfonic acid.
- 21. The composition of claim 19 wherein said anti-solar agent is 3-benzylidene-2-oxo-10-bornane sulfonic acid.
- 22. A cosmetic composition comprising a solution or suspension of a U.V. radiation absorbing amount of sodium 3-benzylidene-2-oxo-10 bornane sulfonic acid wherein said composition absorbs ultraviolet rays in the zone ranging from 280 to 315 millimicrons and transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 to 400 millimicrons.
- 23. A cosmetic composition comprising a solution or suspension of a U.V. radiation absorbing amount of 3-benzylidene-2-oxo-10 bornane sulfonic acid which absorbs ultraviolet rays from 280 to 315 millimicrons and transmits ultraviolet rays from 315 to 400 millimicrons.
- 24. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 1.
- 25. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 14.
- 26. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 15.
- 27. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 19.
- 28. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 22.
- 29. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 23.
- 30. A method of protecting the human skin against U.V. solar radiation which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of a composition according to claim 15.
- 31. A method of claim 25 wherein said compound has the formula ##STR16##
