Claims
- 1. A method for converting a ventricular tachycardia to normal sinus rhythm, comprising the steps of:(a) determining which one of a first pair of electrodes and a second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia, the first pair of electrodes being implanted in the left ventricle, and the second pair of electrodes being implanted in the right ventricle; and (b) delivering anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) pulses using the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein step (a) comprises:(a.1) sensing a first signal from a heart's left ventricle; (a.2) sensing a second signal from the heart's right ventricle; (a.3) determining, based on the first sensed signal and the second sensed signal, which one of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein step (a) comprises:(a.1) sensing a first signal from a heart's left ventricle; (a.2) sensing a second signal from the heart's right ventricle; (a.3) sensing a far field signal; and (a.4) determining, based on the first sensed signal, the second sensed signal and the far field signal, which one of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein step (a.3) comprises sensing the far-field signal by determining a voltage between an RV coil and a housing of an implanted device.
- 5. The method of claim 3, wherein step (a.4) comprises comparing the first sensed signal and the second sensed signal to the far field signal to determine which of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia.
- 6. The method of claim 3, wherein step (a.4) comprises determining that the first pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop if a beginning of a pulse of the far field signal is closer to a beginning of a pulse of the first sensed signal than to a beginning of a corresponding pulse of the second sensed signal, otherwise, determining that the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop.
- 7. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:(c) determining whether the ventricular tachycardia has been converted into normal sinus rhythm; and (d) delivering anti-tachycardia pacing pulses using the pair of electrodes that were not used at step (b), if it is determined at step (c) that the ventricular tachycardia has not been converted to normal sinus rhythm.
- 8. The method of claim 7, further comprising the following steps:(e) determining whether the ventricular tachycardia was converted into normal sinus rhythm; and (f) returning to step (b), if it is determined at step (e) that the ventricular tachycardia has not been converted to normal sinus rhythm.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising repeating steps (b) through (f) until the ventricular tachycardia is converted to normal sinus rhythm.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein step (c) comprises:(c.1) shorting together the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop; and (c.2) delivering the anti-tachycardia pacing pulses using the shorted together pair of electrodes.
- 11. A method for converting a ventricular tachycardia to normal sinus rhythm, comprising the steps of:(a) determining which one of a first pair of electrodes and a second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia, the first pair of electrodes implanted in the left ventricle, the second pair of electrodes implanted in the right ventricle; and (b) delivering first anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) pulses, using the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop, and second ATP pulses using the other pair of electrodes, wherein each pulse in the second ATP pulses is later in time than a corresponding pulse in the first ATP pulses.
- 12. An implantable device for converting a ventricular tachycardia to normal sinus rhythm, comprising:means for determining which one of a first pair of electrodes and a second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia, the first pair of electrodes implanted in the left ventricle, the second pair of electrodes implanted in the right ventricle; and means for delivering anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) pulses using the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop.
- 13. The device of claim 12, wherein:the first pair of electrodes are adapted to be implanted in a heart's left ventricle and to sense a first signal from the left ventricle; the second pair of electrodes are adapted to be implanted in the heart's right ventricle and to sense a second signal from the right ventricle; and the means for determining is adapted to determine which one of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia based on the first sensed signal and the second sensed signal.
- 14. The device of claim 13, further comprising means for sensing a far field signal, and wherein:the first pair of electrodes are adapted to be implanted in a heart's left ventricle and to sense a first signal from the left ventricle; the second pair of electrodes are adapted to be implanted in the heart's right ventricle and to sense a second signal from the right ventricle; and the means for determining is adapted to determine which one of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia based on the first sensed signal, the second sensed signal and the far field signal.
- 15. The device of claim 14, wherein the means for sensing the far-field signal is adapted to sense a voltage between an RV coil and a housing of the implanted device.
- 16. The device of claim 15, wherein the means for determining is adapted to compare the first sensed signal and the second sensed signal to the far field signal to determine which of the first pair of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia.
- 17. The device of claim 16, wherein the means for determining is further adapted to determine that the first pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop if a beginning of a pulse of the far field signal is closer to a beginning of a pulse of the first sensed signal than to a beginning of a corresponding pulse of the second sensed signal, otherwise, to determine that the second pair of electrodes is closer to the reentrant loop.
- 18. The device of claim 12, further comprising:an electrode switch adapted to short together the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop, wherein the means adapted to deliver the anti-tachycardia pacing pulses delivers the anti-tachycardia pacing pulses using the shorted together pair of electrodes.
- 19. A device for converting a ventricular tachycardia to normal sinus rhythm, comprising:means for determining which one of a first pair of electrodes and a second pair of electrodes is closer to a reentrant loop of the ventricular tachycardia, the first pair of electrodes implanted in the left ventricle, the second pair of electrodes implanted in the right ventricle; and means for delivering first anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) pulses, using the pair of electrodes that are determined to be closer to the reentrant loop, and second ATP pulses using the other pair of electrodes, wherein each pulse in the second ATP pulses is later in time than a corresponding pulse in the first ATP pulses.
