Claims
- 1. A pharmaceutical composition for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR31## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, a salt forming ion or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and
- n has a value of 1 to 7,
- in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the configuration about the depicted double bond in said compound is E.
- 3. A composition according to claim 2 wherein R.sup.1 in said compound is methyl.
- 4. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 1.
- 5. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 2.
- 6. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said composition is 3.
- 7. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 4.
- 8. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 5.
- 9. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 6.
- 10. A composition according to claim 3 wherein n in said compound is 7.
- 11. A pharmaceutical composition for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR32## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, a salt forming ion or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and
- n has a value of 9 to 20,
- in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
- 12. A composition according to claim 11 wherein n in said compound has a value of 10 and R.sup.1 is methyl.
- 13. A method of treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises administering to a human or animal in need thereof an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR33## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, a salt forming ion or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and
- n has a value of 1 to 7.
- 14. The method according to claim 13 wherein the configuration about the depicted double bond in said compound is E.
- 15. A method according to claim 14 wherein R.sup.1 in said compound is methyl.
- 16. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 1.
- 17. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 2.
- 18. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 3.
- 19. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 4.
- 20. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 5.
- 21. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 6.
- 22. A method according to claim 15 wherein n in said compound is 7.
- 23. A method of treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises administering to a human or animal in need thereof an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR34## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen, a salt forming ion or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and
- n has a value of 9 to 20.
- 24. A method according to claim 23 wherein n in said compound has a value of 10 and R.sup.1 is methyl.
