Claims
- 1. A method of preserving an ophthalmic composition comprising:combining a quinolone component and a carrier component to form an ophthalmic composition, the quinolone component being present in the composition in an amount effective in preserving the composition so that the composition passes the United States Preservative Efficacy Test, the carrier component being ophthalmically acceptable and being present in an amount effective to act as a carrier for the quinolone component.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the ophthalmic composition formed is substantially free of other components effective as preservatives and is sufficiently self-preserved so as to pass the United States Preservative Efficacy Test.
- 3. The method of claim which further comprises placing the ophthalmic composition in a multi-dose format.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrier component is aqueous and contains one or more other ophthalmically acceptable ingredients.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the carrier component is selected to provide the composition in a form selected from the group consisting of a solution, a suspension, a gel, an ointment and a solid.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition formed is a solution.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the combining step includes one or more ophthalmically acceptable active components together with the quinolone component and the carrier component.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the quinolone component is a halogenated quinolone component.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the quinolone component is a fluorinated quinolone component.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein the quinolone component is an ofloxacin component.
