Claims
- 1. An isolated or antibody which specifically, binds to a P. falciparum polypeptide, antigen comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of:

- wherein said polypeptide induces antibodies that react with the schizont stage of Plasmodium falciparum, and wherein said polypeptide does not react with antibodies to the blood or sporozoite stages of Plasmodium falciparum.
- 2. An isolated or purified antibody which specifically binds to an epitope contained on a peptide selected from the group of amino acid sequences recited in claim 1, wherein said antibody selectively binds to the schizont stage of Plasmodium falciparum and does not substantially bind to the blood or sporozoite stages of Plasmodium falciparum.
- 3. The purified antibody according to claim 1, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least two of said amino acid sequences.
- 4. The purified antibody according to claim 1, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least one multiple of said amino acid sequences.
- 5. The purified antibody according to any one of claims 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein the polypeptide is bound to a solid support.
- 6. The purified antibody according to claim 1, wherein the polypeptide is a conjugate which comprises at least one of said amino acid sequences and a carrier molecule therefor.
- 7. The purified antibody according to claim 1, wherein the polypeptide is a chimeric polypeptide comprising at least one of said amino acid sequences.
- 8. A method for the detection of antibodies to liver stages of Plasmodium falciparum comprising the steps of:
- (a) contacting a sample suspected of containing antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum with a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of:

- wherein said polypeptide induces antibodies that react with the schizont stage of Plasmodium falciparum, and wherein said polypeptide does not substantially react with antibodies to the blood or sporozoite stages of Plasmodium falciparum, under conditions suitable for the formation of antibody-antigen complex; and
- (b) detecting formation of an antigen-antibody complex.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least two of said amino acid sequences.
- 10. The method according to claim 8, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least one multiple of said amino acid sequences.
- 11. The method according to any one of claims 8, 9, or 10, wherein the polypeptide is bound to a solid support.
- 12. The method according to claim 8, wherein the polypeptide is a conjugate which comprises at least one of said amino acid sequences and a carrier molecule therefor.
- 13. The method according to claim 8, wherein the polypeptide is a chimeric polypeptide comprising at least one of said amino acid sequences.
- 14. A kit for detecting antibodies to liver stages of Plasmodium falciparum comprising:
- (a) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of:

- wherein said polypeptide induces antibodies that react with the schizont stage of Plasmodium falciparum, and wherein said polypeptide does not react with antibodies to the blood or sporozoite stages of Plasmodium falciparum;
- (b) a medium in which an antigen-antibody complex can form; and
- (c) a reagent for the detection of antigen-antibody complex formation between said polypeptide and antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum.
- 15. The kit according to claim 14, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least two of said amino acid sequences.
- 16. The kit according to claim 14, wherein the polypeptide comprises at least one multiple of said amino acid sequences.
- 17. The kit according to any one of claims 14, 15 or 16, wherein the polypeptide is bound to a solid support.
- 18. The kit according to claim 14, wherein the polypeptide is a conjugate which comprises at least one of said amino acid sequences and a carrier molecule therefor.
- 19. The kit according to claim 14, wherein the polypeptide is a chimeric polypeptide comprising at least one of said amino acid sequences.
